- Well, I did it. This is THE lowest possible score you can finish the game with (without continuing). And surprisingly, it didn't take very long at all. Sadly, it's not deathless, as I miss my first attempt at the 8-1 wall jump. Getting 500 points without dying would have been nice, but that jump is so brutally precise I'd rather not restart every time I missed it (though I would have to restart anyway if I accidentally picked up a coin).
How tough is that jump in 8-1? Well, the timing of the liftoff, the duration of holding the jump button, and the timing of the wall jump are all frame perfect. NES games run at 60 frames per second, which means all the necessary inputs need to be timed within 1/60 of a second. In addition, the starting position before running I used not only has to be on the right pixel, but also the x sub-pixel has to fall within a certain range (technical stuff blah blah blah). In short, it's a pretty annoying jump.
Amazingly enough, I managed to accomplish my objective after my first successful 8-1 wall jump in a run. I was extremely cautious for the remainder of the run, not risking jumping over any of the hammer bros. I also had a few panicky moments since I was fairly jittery, but luckily nothing that cost me the run. By the end I felt like my heart was going to explode.
The other couple tricks I used I explain in the 600 point video. I leave in the death to evidence my humanity, and to showcase how precise you need to be to pull off that wall jump. There is literally no room for error.
No save states or slowdown was used. I did however fast-forward at flagpoles for obvious reasons. (also, I didn't look at the RAM during the run to make sure the sub-pixel was within the right range)
That's all I care to say. Now... TO A MILLION!

Who knew you had to be so good to get a score that bad? It takes skill to fail that hard.
I know that... but the goal is to get a high score, and so if you do badly, you get a low score. But they design the game so that you have to get at least some points... but he didn't. He did worse than bad, point wise, and that takes a lot of talent.

This is technically a pacifist run as well. It's not Mario's fault that the guy Bowser hired to build his bridge only used one suspension cable.

It's a glitch run or fake. I think fake actually. The pipe used in 4-2 gives that away.

This is pretty awesome! But I have a question, I have never seen anyone do this before but at 4-2 instead of using the beanstalk you used the pipe to get to the warps. Is it because you walked onto the pipe backwards that activated this to work?

pursuing222 A couple strategic backwards jumps allowed Mario to move right of the screen center. This allowed me to go the the vine's usual destination from that pipe since the new warp location hadn't loaded yet.

rachetc1 Videos used to be playable at 60 FPS. This is really noticeable on NES games where sprites flicker every other frame. The orange wizzrobes all used to be visible in my old Zelda videos, but not so much anymore. Clones and attacks in Ninja Gaiden 2? Half are invisible. It's very frustrating. :(

They're not actually toads. They're turned into bricks, not floating brick blocks. Also, in the Super Mario Brothers Super Show! they're bricks, not floating brick blocks. What's even better is that there are floating bricks whilst the toads exist normally.

Technically, you might be able to roll over the score and end with all zeros, but this is way cooler.

At 2:27, you go down into a pipe to hit the warp, instead of the vine... I've never seen that before, it blew my mind to the point where I plugged my NES in to try it, and it just goes into a coin pit... so can someone explain to me what the hell is going on? Is reality collapsing around me?
In the video you see how he does 3 jumps where mario faces LEFT in 4-2 before entering the pipe? It effects the camera (see mario is not at the true center) and because of this the position of the warp zone has overlapped with the pipe and it results in a "wrong warp" glitch causing the pipe to take you to the warp zone instead of the intended coin-bonus room
Thanks guys, I felt like I learned I was adopted or something, like the past 29 years were a lie or something. I even plugged my NES in and went down the pipe, and didn't go to the warp zone, which made me even more confused. But it all makes sense now.
