There was a section of the video that I cut for time where I talked about how it was likely the Discovery X5 was just an ODM'd product from a Chinese manufacturer. Turns out that is indeed the case, it's just a rebadged Onebot S6 (with some slight cosmetic differences and a more powerful motor). At least now I know of an alternate source for replacement parts!

Being able to cover 160 or 180 km of distance non stop in a ride of 7 or 8 hours without problem.......... I can assure you.. that you can ride a traditional cheap bike (with some low range Shimano V6 of just 6 gears) on gear1 or gear2 .. with a looooooooooooot less effort than the one you ware doing on that "electric assist Bike"......... and without a doubt with a lot less effort than you ware doing in the previous video where you could barely speak in some moments............ what i'm trying to tell you..... is that the effort you are doing there.. on an almost flat surface... with just a minimal climb... it is the equivalent to what I do when I climb a bridge in Gear3.......... which is something you don't do... you climb a bridge in gear2 or gear1... depending of how steep it is the bridge..... normal bike with gears ... you're going to have a much better biking time than with that crappy thing...
As a cyclist, with experience on a range of bikes, I have to say you did a fantastic job on reviewing this bike. I personally don't quite like e-bikes too much, but I think it's still a great tool to get people out of the house and do some exercise and enjoy the outdoors. With the saddle, I would not go bigger for comfort. I would go much more narrow. It may seem counterintuitive, but bigger saddles are actually less comfortable. If you are so inclined to change the saddle, I would suggest going to a bike shop where they can give you suggestions of saddles that may fit you nicely. You need a saddle which will sit comfortably on your "sit-bones" that way your muscles don't end up getting bruised. It will feel a bit uncomfortable for the first ride or so, but you'll be much more comfy after that. Also, if you see a bump approaching, I find it helps to lift off the saddle a bit. That way your legs and arms function as additional shock absorbers and the shock doesn't travel through your spine. In regards to the disc brakes, well done on getting those. They are really great and work well in even the worst conditions. Manufacturers constantly update and change disc brakes and the pads, but you should be able to still get replacement parts for them in any reputable bike shop. If you are storing your bike over winter, I would suggest taking it in for a "service" if you're not comfortable doing it yourself. It's mainly to check the cable tension in the brakes. You might even find that there is some stretching in the cables within the first couple of rides and your brake performance goes down a bit. But it's an easy fix. Also, I don't know if you already know this, but to ensure your brakes live long, brake more with the front brake than the rear one. You'll get much more even wear of the pads over time and much better stopping power. Thanks again for this video. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
I'm so glad you mentioned the seat pad! Wider and 'comfier' is never better - especially for posture and long rides. When Colin brought up that he wanted a wider pad I instantly went into cyclist mode - as you did as well :)
First, very good comprehensive review. You covered about all any one would want to know and you did it without any annoying, super loud stupid music. Very nice camera work. Second the bike is similar if not exactly the same as Swagtron EB 7 Elite. I have the Elite and my ideas very much agree with yours. My compliments on a fine over all video.
Nice rewiew. Based on the recommendation of an associate I bought two of these, one for me and one for my wife. We want them for when we take our plane somewhere so we can ride around, for example on Nantucket, Block Island and P-town. No waiting for an expensive taxi or Uber to go the few miles to town and there are so many beautiful bike paths to explore. The ability to fold up is essential. We just got these a couple of days ago and the user manual is quite lacking. The twist knob and horn button are not mentioned in the manual nor is the motor operation explained, so thank you. Right now they are $900 on their site but if you get refurbished those are $200 off (one came obviously new the other was effectively unused) and there is a "back to school" special for another $200 off. So for $500 shipped you get an ebike which is perfect for throwing in the back of a plane.

Looks fine enough for short rides and short ranges. Not a fan of TINY wheel e-bikes but the fact that they are easy to take with you that is pretty useful. I own a normal sized e-bike with normal sized wheels and it is great for long range. And quite efficient too. And being European, you have to paddle! But I can see how a small bike like that will be great for train travel. It seems small enough not to require a special train ticket. You take the "long" part of the route in train. Which around here are pretty decent. And bike the rest in an foldable ebike.
The list price on the Jupiter website has been lowered to $795 and we were able to buy one for $700 direct from Jupiter at an RV show. Certainly $600 would be a better price if Costco has them at that. Ray hadn't ridden a bike in 50 years and is struggles with asthma, so it seems that this is a pretty good fit for him to get some exercise.

$795. I bought a Jetson Bolt Pro at Costco for $299. It's very similar but with a slightly bigger battery (6 AH). The Jetson does not fold in half but the steering column does fold down. The battery is not removable on the Jetson, but it's $299. Did I mention it's just $299? And a lot of fun.
Jetson Bolt Pro is a great value at around $349 at costco atm. It has pedals, 6ah battery, etc. And the battery isn't too bad to remove or beef up with another one down the road. Can get a lot of fun out of that $345 and not sure would be better paying $800 plus for this X5 bike.
You do an excellent and very thorough review. I bought an x5 from Costco. Really wanted to like it but I hit a small curb edge while riding on a sidewalk and it threw me over the handlebars. Fortunately I was wearing a helmet but I did get pretty badly cut and bruised. The center of gravity is too high and the wheels are too small for a 200 pound 6 foot man. I’m sticking with the Lectric XP. It’s heavier but it still does fold and it is MUCH safer. I’m not trying to throw a wet blanket on this but I did want to share a very real safety concern for larger riders.
@@snowfreeze Yeah, I understand how you felt. Take a look at Lectric if you are still looking for a bike. The new 2.0 models are really nice. They have 3 inch wide 20 inch tires. Up to 28 mph and they have front suspension and a rack that holds about 70lbs. $999. But about eight weeks for delivery. Global supply chains are a mess right now.
@@JohnBuckmaster Isn't there a Dewalt that does either 18 or something like 50 volts, depending on what you put it in? On a side note: you can fairly simply make a bike that would accept 2 or 3 18V batteries in series :-)
@@starpilotalliance And Voltage, what voltage is a handdrill battery pack? e-bike batteries are either 36v 48v or even 52v. and yes if you make them yourself you can push up to 72v. How higher the voltage how more potential power the engine can push. IF a hand drill uses 18v instead of lets say 36v then it only can push out 50% potential power to the drive. Without raising the amperage too high.

I weigh about 265 but theres no mention on mile reduction on the website based on weight. now over 1 year later it only goes about 4 miles . they claim 30 miles?? your video didnt cover battery life?

Thank you for a great review. I have been looking at ebikes for years without committing. I definitely want to pedal and really only want the assist for times of need and distance. I often have had difficulty in the past because I am 5'2" and the bikes I have test ridden have not been able to fit my frame. So I am hoping this one may. Plus, I am wondering how does this bike do off road? I am planning to travel soon and would love to go through the parks without pavement. It’s got a decently wide fart hole built right into the seat witch is really nice usually that’s an upgrade perk mostly saved for the high end models so it’s nice to see that they didn’t skimp out in that regard.
How come you chose this eBike over the Swagtron EB7 Plus? The EB7 Plus costs $100-200 less and the battery costs $150. It comes with a 7 gear shifting and 18 mph top speed. I'm thinking really hard whether to get the Jupiter Discovery X5, Swagtron EB7 Plus, or the Totem TC3

Have you found a good lock that won't damage the bike if you need to leave it outside? Do uyou know of a good rear view mirro for the handle bars. I use it in NYC for commuting.
Interesting and informative video. I'm in Thailand and a local version of this E-bike (Nakxus) is on my short list. It's selling here online for about $430 but it seems the motor is only 250 watt, 36 Volt, 8.5AH. Terrain where I will be riding is generally flat and I don't anticipate rides of more than 10 miles (I'm 77) so the lower power/range doesn't seem an issue. Seeing you riding and hearing your impressions will be really helpful to me for making my decision. Thanks

I'm from Texas. I used to visit a friend in 's-Hertogenbosch every couple years. Bike is really the best way to get around that town...and many others of course. Beautiful!

The only part that can be hard to find will be that rear shock, probably AliExpress has it. As a bike rider I think that the tire size is tiny, any pothole or three root will make your day. Apart from that looks well engineered. Does it hold the top speed going uphill?
Can you just ride this e-bike with just throttle including take off? I realize this is an only 350W motor so it will be a little lethargic on take off but as long as it gets to at least 15mph with just throttle is OK for me as I will only ride on sidewalks anyway so won't be racing down any sidewalks. I'm in mid 70's so as a just go to food store to pick up a few items or to doctors office(near by-only 2 miles from my home) is what I would use it for. Is this OK for that type of riding. The Jetson Bolt Pro is from Costco and its $300 with similar features. The Jupiter bike has a few more benefits but I don’t think it’s worth the extra $300-$500 dollars more for the Jupiter. I like my Jetson Pro.

FYI Discovery has an upgrade...the X7. 20 inch (vs 16) wheels, and 6 speed Shimano Gear Shift, larger battery, longer wheel-base etc....and of course a few hundred dollars more:-) @This Does Not Compute - have you had any personal experience with that model? Thoughts based on specs and/or reviews of others?
I've definitely been looking at eBikes - one brand I've really considered is Aventon (either the Sinch or Pace 500) - big fan of their customer service and are a local company. That said, this Jupiter looks like a solid alternative. Range seems 'ok' but the systems you spoke of seem a bit basic, but for most that should be ok. Would love an update in the future on how you like it.

My wife is 5 foot even and she can ride it. We just had to remove the safety screw to shorten the seat more. But beware, one of the two we bought from Costco is going back. Possibly both. After just 19 miles on the odometer, it is totally dead. And Jupiter Ebikes is literally the worst company to deal with in respect to "customer service". Good thing Costco has agreed to refund us though.
Where is that bike path ? We live in upstate NY and there are numerous bike paths. Nice review and I'll check out Costco as there is one about 15 miles away.

@@andreii.6094 I meant Pedal. I was talking about the distance from where you put your feet to the center turning point. Basically I was saying the ratio of the petals to the ratio of the petal gear, the ratio of the petal gear to the wheel gear, and the size of the wheels all determine torque. If you have small wheels, and a small gear driving the rear wheel, with a large front gear / larger distance from pedals to gear center, you can still have high torque (meaning going up hill will not be as hard, but attaining high speed will be harder). Gear ratio is what I am mostly referring to.
Battery expensive? My 400Wh battery is around 500 euro's. And no I can't really find it much cheaper. 470 euros if I am lucky. Your 187.2Wh battery obviously is cheaper. But an ebike battery should have some stuff added to it, for safety and keeping it efficient. Like an BMS and a controlled charger system. So that you don't overcharge a battery or FUBAR it forgetting to disconnect the charger. Not super expensive but still require some work to put together. So 200 dollars for a 200ish battery? Not bad! There is a SCIENCE behind making sure a battery stays optimal and efficient. This costs money. Also QUALITY parts cost money, there are cheap batteries and expensive ones. I don't say that expensive ones are better but they might come with better parts ;)
My Jupiter Discovery X5 is squirrelly. Rather unstable. The Florida importer has no suggestions. I have 50 psi in the tires. I am 5 ft 10 in, and 150 pounds. Any suggestions before I return it?
The problem is that they cost too much for what they are. That bike costs ~$900, which is about the starting price for older cars that still run. You can get decent quality town bikes starting at $450. You can get cheap ones that work well for closer to $150. The high prices of ebikes essentially price themselves out of the market while simultaneously preventing them from reaching markets of scale that would bring the price down..
@@pyro226 Depends where you life really and what you want to get done. A second hand car is useful I agree, enough space to put stuff, it keeps you out of the rain, moves you much further because you can tank. BUT! ... you are not welcome in parks, nature trails, bike paths, and those little "in between" roads that some cities tend to have. A car? Go around or not even enter the CENTER area as cars are forbidden. A bike or ebike... oh please come in! Understand, I life in Europe, many cities are HELL for cars. "Nope can't enter here" "Only if you life here" "One way traffic" "Road just wide enough for one normal car" etc. So bikes are actually very nice to have. Or mopeds! Americans like to point out that american roads are for cars, and yeah american roads are designed for cars! Not bikes, or people... In some countries bikes and people are put above cars. Quite surprising isn't it?
@@pyro226 Honestly a good bike (road, mountain, or even general commute bikes) with solid parts and body - typically start around the same as this eBike. It's not uncommon to pay a minimum of $1k for a starter road bike from Giant or Trek...and mountain bikes start around $6-$800 new. That said, you can always buy used - which can see considerable discounts. I wouldn't be surprised to see a used market for eBikes start popping up in the next year or two - and since many parts are interchangeable upgrading/rebuilding shouldn't be an issue
@@saynotop2w Conversions can get a bit sketchy - there are SO many upgrades to consider. Brakes, chaining, cranksets, tires, and even the frame can be affected by the conversion to eBike. A neighbor of mine upgraded his Trek (mountain bike) and has now spent thousands on upgraded parts - because of failing hubs, cranksets, brakes, etc. It can get wildly expensive - and many times it's almost better just to buy new/lightly used that was built for it
I bought an X5 recently and love it. Wondering what PSI you keep your tires at? They give a range of 40 to 60 but that seems to be giving too much lee-way. I'm afraid of over-inflating them.
Can I charge it where electric cars get charged. I dont want to charge it in my apartment. Do I have any other options. I can barely have the microwave on and air condition without the electricity going off
Very good complete review. Kind of like the Jetson Bolt though. The ergonomics of these bikes leave something to be desired. They both kind of look like a cross between a kick scooter and a stationary exercise bike. 600 bucks obviously not Canadian dollars, but ever American is still pretty cheap. I am building my own, or converting my old 21 speed mountain bike with 26 inch wheels. The major hurdle in Canada is getting cheap batteries from China shipped here. So far has been about a month and a half that I have been waiting. I refuse to pay over 800 bucks on sale half price from one of these ebike stores here. Less than a quarter of the capacity!
Do you know if this can pull weight? I got a bike trailer for my dog but it is hard to pull on my bike, was looking into getting an electric bike to help when I take her with me.
I have a relatively new Lectric XP Lite. I have yet to hit the 100 mile mark on the odometer. Unfortunately, I've discovered the bike is too big for my 5"2' frame, so I'm planning to sell it and purchase a bike that fits me. I'm curious about what rider heights they suggest for this bike. Does anyone know?
You definitely get a better product with MiRider the display is better, there are also 5 assist levels and the handlebars look better. And it's assembled in UK 🇬🇧 although parts might be made in China 🇨🇳 😞
i hate using gas in my car but there is nothing you can do when it snows and you still have to get from point A to B even though they are better electric cars still use up more energy than something smaller would and with electric cars good luck going to far from your house cuz gas stations don't work on them edit to add another bad thing about where i live that makes bikes suck is hitting mailboxes on the sidewalk cuz they all stick out
I think so - with that short of a distance you wouldn’t have to worry about battery life (you’d be able to ride back from the office even if you forgot to plug the bike in during the day).

e-bike batteries are either 36v 48v or even 52v. and yes if you make them yourself you can push up to 72v.
How higher the voltage how more potential power the engine can push.
IF a hand drill uses 18v instead of lets say 36v then it only can push out 50% potential power to the drive. Without raising the amperage too high.

I weigh about 265 but theres no mention on mile reduction on the website based on weight. now over 1 year later it only goes about 4 miles . they claim 30 miles?? your video didnt cover battery life?

Thank you for a great review. I have been looking at ebikes for years without committing. I definitely want to pedal and really only want the assist for times of need and distance. I often have had difficulty in the past because I am 5'2" and the bikes I have test ridden have not been able to fit my frame. So I am hoping this one may. Plus, I am wondering how does this bike do off road? I am planning to travel soon and would love to go through the parks without pavement. It’s got a decently wide fart hole built right into the seat witch is really nice usually that’s an upgrade perk mostly saved for the high end models so it’s nice to see that they didn’t skimp out in that regard.

How come you chose this eBike over the Swagtron EB7 Plus? The EB7 Plus costs $100-200 less and the battery costs $150. It comes with a 7 gear shifting and 18 mph top speed. I'm thinking really hard whether to get the Jupiter Discovery X5, Swagtron EB7 Plus, or the Totem TC3
Avoid the Jupiter at all costs. See my other (earlier) post on here as to why. I don't feel like repeating.

Interesting and informative video. I'm in Thailand and a local version of this E-bike (Nakxus) is on my short list. It's selling here online for about $430 but it seems the motor is only 250 watt, 36 Volt, 8.5AH. Terrain where I will be riding is generally flat and I don't anticipate rides of more than 10 miles (I'm 77) so the lower power/range doesn't seem an issue. Seeing you riding and hearing your impressions will be really helpful to me for making my decision. Thanks

I'm from Texas. I used to visit a friend in 's-Hertogenbosch every couple years. Bike is really the best way to get around that town...and many others of course. Beautiful!

The only part that can be hard to find will be that rear shock, probably AliExpress has it.
As a bike rider I think that the tire size is tiny, any pothole or three root will make your day. Apart from that looks well engineered.
Does it hold the top speed going uphill?
It doesn't hold "top" on flat ground so I have no idea why you think it would going uphill.
Can you just ride this e-bike with just throttle including take off? I realize this is an only 350W motor so it will be a little lethargic on take off but as long as it gets to at least 15mph with just throttle is OK for me as I will only ride on sidewalks anyway so won't be racing down any sidewalks. I'm in mid 70's so as a just go to food store to pick up a few items or to doctors office(near by-only 2 miles from my home) is what I would use it for. Is this OK for that type of riding. The Jetson Bolt Pro is from Costco and its $300 with similar features. The Jupiter bike has a few more benefits but I don’t think it’s worth the extra $300-$500 dollars more for the Jupiter. I like my Jetson Pro.

I've definitely been looking at eBikes - one brand I've really considered is Aventon (either the Sinch or Pace 500) - big fan of their customer service and are a local company. That said, this Jupiter looks like a solid alternative. Range seems 'ok' but the systems you spoke of seem a bit basic, but for most that should be ok. Would love an update in the future on how you like it.

My wife is 5 foot even and she can ride it. We just had to remove the safety screw to shorten the seat more. But beware, one of the two we bought from Costco is going back. Possibly both. After just 19 miles on the odometer, it is totally dead. And Jupiter Ebikes is literally the worst company to deal with in respect to "customer service". Good thing Costco has agreed to refund us though.

Maybe it's a smaller petal crank, but the fact that it has small wheels should help offset the fact that it's a single gear.
@@andreii.6094 I meant Pedal. I was talking about the distance from where you put your feet to the center turning point. Basically I was saying the ratio of the petals to the ratio of the petal gear, the ratio of the petal gear to the wheel gear, and the size of the wheels all determine torque. If you have small wheels, and a small gear driving the rear wheel, with a large front gear / larger distance from pedals to gear center, you can still have high torque (meaning going up hill will not be as hard, but attaining high speed will be harder). Gear ratio is what I am mostly referring to.
Battery expensive? My 400Wh battery is around 500 euro's. And no I can't really find it much cheaper. 470 euros if I am lucky.
Your 187.2Wh battery obviously is cheaper. But an ebike battery should have some stuff added to it, for safety and keeping it efficient. Like an BMS and a controlled charger system. So that you don't overcharge a battery or FUBAR it forgetting to disconnect the charger. Not super expensive but still require some work to put together. So 200 dollars for a 200ish battery? Not bad! There is a SCIENCE behind making sure a battery stays optimal and efficient. This costs money. Also QUALITY parts cost money, there are cheap batteries and expensive ones. I don't say that expensive ones are better but they might come with better parts ;)

The problem is that they cost too much for what they are. That bike costs ~$900, which is about the starting price for older cars that still run. You can get decent quality town bikes starting at $450. You can get cheap ones that work well for closer to $150. The high prices of ebikes essentially price themselves out of the market while simultaneously preventing them from reaching markets of scale that would bring the price down..

A second hand car is useful I agree, enough space to put stuff, it keeps you out of the rain, moves you much further because you can tank. BUT! ... you are not welcome in parks, nature trails, bike paths, and those little "in between" roads that some cities tend to have.

Understand, I life in Europe, many cities are HELL for cars. "Nope can't enter here" "Only if you life here" "One way traffic" "Road just wide enough for one normal car" etc.

I found a mechanic-welder guy on Craigslist who converts mountain bikes to a ebike, maybe you can find one near you.
@@pyro226 Honestly a good bike (road, mountain, or even general commute bikes) with solid parts and body - typically start around the same as this eBike. It's not uncommon to pay a minimum of $1k for a starter road bike from Giant or Trek...and mountain bikes start around $6-$800 new.
That said, you can always buy used - which can see considerable discounts. I wouldn't be surprised to see a used market for eBikes start popping up in the next year or two - and since many parts are interchangeable upgrading/rebuilding shouldn't be an issue
@@saynotop2w Conversions can get a bit sketchy - there are SO many upgrades to consider. Brakes, chaining, cranksets, tires, and even the frame can be affected by the conversion to eBike. A neighbor of mine upgraded his Trek (mountain bike) and has now spent thousands on upgraded parts - because of failing hubs, cranksets, brakes, etc. It can get wildly expensive - and many times it's almost better just to buy new/lightly used that was built for it

I bought an X5 recently and love it. Wondering what PSI you keep your tires at? They give a range of 40 to 60 but that seems to be giving too much lee-way. I'm afraid of over-inflating them.

Very good complete review. Kind of like the Jetson Bolt though. The ergonomics of these bikes leave something to be desired. They both kind of look like a cross between a kick scooter and a stationary exercise bike.

I have a relatively new Lectric XP Lite. I have yet to hit the 100 mile mark on the odometer. Unfortunately, I've discovered the bike is too big for my 5"2' frame, so I'm planning to sell it and purchase a bike that fits me. I'm curious about what rider heights they suggest for this bike. I'm pretty damn shocked at the price you guys can pay for this bike. In the U.K it is known as the MiRider but costs the equivalent of $1700!! (£1200)
I assure you, you get what you pay for with this bike (or less, actually).
You definitely get a better product with MiRider the display is better, there are also 5 assist levels and the handlebars look better. And it's assembled in UK 🇬🇧 although parts might be made in China 🇨🇳 😞

i hate using gas in my car but there is nothing you can do when it snows and you still have to get from point A to B even though they are better electric cars still use up more energy than something smaller would and with electric cars good luck going to far from your house cuz gas stations don't work on them

I think so - with that short of a distance you wouldn’t have to worry about battery life (you’d be able to ride back from the office even if you forgot to plug the bike in during the day).
