    I finally purchased this stone to go along with a number of my Shapton Glass stones. OMG!! This stone is amazing. After a few minutes of using it, it completely restored the edge of an old kitchen paring knife to virtually razor sharp. It sliced effortlessly thru newspaper. I consider this one of the best additions to my sharpening collection. Great recommendation Kyle.

    I admire your steady hand. I need to get better at sharpening. I usually try not to let my knives get too dull so that all they ever really require is a few passes on a Fallkniven DC4 and some stropping. It’s something I enjoy doing at night...touching-up the knife I carried/used that day.

      That's a good strategy, Matt! Regular maintenance to delay the need for aggressive sharpening as long as possible!

    God I love the sound of steel on a quality stone. It’s ASMR for me. Good to see some freehand sharpening back on the channel again. After watching your last unboxing, I bought a Green Brick of Joy! It’s a piece of artwork. I’m going to do some sharpening tomorrow. Maybe even record something for my new channel. The sharpening shots and angles were sweet. Keep it up.

    That Shapton series is a splash and go fyi. I have the 320, 1000, 1500, and 2000. The 2000 is really hard compared to the others for some reason. I feel like all of them leave a more aggressive scratch pattern than they are rated.

    • @insanity4462
      @insanity4462 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That 2000 is my favorite stone. Agree with the scratch pattern, even the 1000 side of the Naniwa 1000/3000 Kombi stone (think its the economical line) leaves a much more refined looking edge, very shiny like a slightly smudgy mirror.

  • @dimmacommunication
    @dimmacommunication 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I watched a video about the cerax 320 but I've read that wears ultra fast.
    So remembering my cream Shapton I'm curious about this 320

  • @jakewolf079
    @jakewolf079 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I had this stone and it's definitely amazing. The only down side is that it wears too fast, barely two years of use and it's already too thin (less than 8mm thick)

    • @kyle_noseworthy
      @kyle_noseworthy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I find coarse stones do wear much faster than fine stones to begin with. I havent found this one too bad though!

      @@kyle_noseworthy True, maybe I need to lighten up my sharpening style. Either way I planned on getting another one cause this stone is just a pleasure to use.

    • @robinsharkey6658
      @robinsharkey6658 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If it's, "too thin" just glue it to some wood. You can use it until it disappears.

      @@kyle_noseworthy is there any reason you can think of why we couldn't glue/bond a stone like the Shapton pro you reviewed here to a backing plate, similar to what they do with the Shapton glass, wouldn't it extend the life of certain splash and go stones for us? And thanks for all the knowledge you drop on us, God bless you brother!

    I'm curious, have you ever tried the Spyderco ceramic stones? I'm relatively new to freehand sharpening and am considering picking those up. I know they aren't water stones, but as I do all of my sharpening by my computer, that's a plus for me. I can get a decent edge with my dmt-fine but am looking to take it that one step further.

    • @MtnLife-sv9fu
      @MtnLife-sv9fu 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Spyderco stones are alot finer than they say. Very brittle but work well.

    • @kyle_noseworthy

      I haven't tried them!

    • @chrisolenick953
      @chrisolenick953 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      the spyderco medium is a wonderful cintered alumina stone. its hreat with water and will practically never dish. also its not nearly as brittle as other water stones. its extremely dense but if you dropped it on concrete it would shatter. once you feel it youll agree!

    • @reeruns9972
      @reeruns9972 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chrisolenick953 Since making this comment I've gotten all 3 spyderco ceramics, and they're easily my favorite stones. They do work well with water, but I've actually found that by using them with mineral oil, it makes them WAY easier to clean, just a wipe after with a paper towel usually does the job. Happy sharpening!

    The Shapton Pro stones are great, or Kuramaku as they are called in Japan, I would argue it's a much better alternative for a beginner than both Naniwa Pro/Choosera and Shapton Glass. If someone asks me for advice, if they have the budget, I always send them to the Shapton Pro line. It's great you're demonstrating the grit levels and scratch pattern's, for many beginners that's sometimes a bit difficult to get right, so my tip to those, is to buy a cheap jewelers lupe and use that to make sure you have removed as much of the scratch pattern from the earlier grit as possible before you move on to the next grit. If there aren't any chips or nicks on the edge, I would have cut off the old edge and started my sharpening at a 800 - 1000# stone with that HRC. But this series isn't about that, so as I said, it's great information for those who are quite fresh to freehand sharpening to go through the whole process of re-profiling, then moving up in grits to eliminate the scratch pattern and the higher you go in grit, the more polished the edge will be and it will glide through whatever you're cutting with great ease and there isn't any resistance. That's the best feeling after a half hour sharpening session! Keep up the great work, Kyle and great initiative for those who are quite new to freehanding. 🔪👌

Although I did just buy the Green Brick of Joy after watching Kyle’s last video, so maybe another stone will be on the way too. Lol

    Hallo Kyle:) Have you falttened this stone yet? Does your method with sandpapr works with it? I`m wondering if, because I`m considering to buy shapton pro 320 and shapton glass 1000, but cost of shapton lapping plate is the reason not to buy shapton stones...By the way, thaks for You videos! :)

    • @chrisolenick953
      @chrisolenick953 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey wojciech, you dont need to buy a shapton lapping plate to use the stones. in fact you could use a different diamond stone dmt atoma etc even smaller nagura style stones and nagura sized diamond stones or silicon carbide on a glass plate and or flatten your stone with a another cheaper stone! hope that helps you to still consider the shaptons because they are great

    Request: Do a Naniwa 2k "Green Brick of Joy" (please). I have one. I say it cuts amazingly fast, and leaves a polish, too, but I find it really tricky to use, somehow. Imo, it is so smooth, and hard, compared to their 1k and their 3k, that it requires a higher level of skill. You get nice even bevels with little effort, so I'd really like to see you work on that 2k stone.

    A great video on the different stones. I’m definitely glad 13prevail Bushcraft made the video of his new knife. I subscribed to your channel after watching it. My only regret is I paid to have a custom bushcraft knife made from one of the Instagram so-called knife makers(prefer not mention the name) a week before the video came out. I’m very unhappy with it and the “custom” made sheath. I knew better than to believe a custom knife could be had for only 150.00 dollars. I will keep you in mind when I can afford a true handmade knife.

      No Kyle, it was hand.made knives. A guy named Ali. My friend bought one and it’s the exact same thing, with a sheath found on EBay for twenty bucks. I fell for it because the dude followed me on Instagram for a couple of months and he subscribed to my TH-cam channel, so I thought he was legit. I didn’t listen to that little voice in my head and paid the price. I’m going to film a video really putting it through its paces. I think the guy is in Pakistan.
