      ...Look at his channel history, dude. Yes, he's tested a lot of stones.
      And I agree with him. Shapton stones are probably the best water stones on the market. I have the same purple 5,000 grit stone he has and have had it for close to 8 years now. Shapton stones provide sharpening on par with something like Chosera stones, which have long been touted as the greatest stones ever (they're not, they're good, but they're not the best by a long shot) while being much, much cheaper and withstanding sharpening and having a lifetime several times longer than Chosera stones. I also have to agree that the feedback on them is good. Once you're hitting the bevel and you're on the angle you want and make a few passes it's really easy to tell from the feedback on the stone when you move off angle whatsoever.
      You're not going to find a better stone for the price. I guarantee this. Just buy it.

    I have had this stone over a month now and really struggling to get anything sharp on it . I'm trying to sharpen some of my daughters kitchen knives, she said they were cheap so wondering if this could part be issue . I have tried all manners of techniques . Stone is constantly needing re flattened as dishes out quite rapidly . I have better success with a cheap oil stone but I so want this stone to work .

    Congratulations you are on the good side of the force now, the shapton pro 1k and 5k are amazing stones you will fall in love with them, but you cant sharpen on the side with the labels on thats against the unwritten rules of japanese waterstone sharpening, and you have to open the surface of the stone when you first got them with 80-120 grit Silicon carbide powder or a atoma 140 because the shaptons have a layer of Wax or anything on it, once you flattend them the cutting speed, feedback, and finish will be much better, have fun with your stones.

    • @jakelilevjen9766
      @jakelilevjen9766 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You know, I was really wondering about this. I started flattening the side with the marking on it before I stopped myself and flattened the other side. What do you use as a flat surface to flatten your stones on? I just have a Norton flattening stone, and some diamond stones. Seems weird to flatten a nice stone on a cheap one, and am concerned I may damage the diamond stone if I use that.

    • @sharpfactory3705
      @sharpfactory3705 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jakelilevjen9766 you can use a glass plate with Silicon carbide powder on it, or atoma diamond plates the 140 works great for flattening, i didnt know the Norton flatening stone but im sure they are Silicon carbide and if the stone is flatt it should work.

    Unless you know what you're doing when it comes to sharpening a tool, it doesn't matter what stone you have. I like Arkansas stones, I've been sharpening knives for the better part of 55 years - that means I started when I was a very young girl at 10 years old. Had my first pocket knife at 8 years of age and never really had good instruction on how to sharpen the first couple years I tried. I guess around age 15 I got pretty good at it with Arkansas stones - which at the time were rated the best on the planet. I use a Lansky sharpening kit nowadays and it works great! For kitchen knives, I'd try this stone. Sounds promising and I liked the video. Well done!

      @@Richeeki 1000 without any hesitation. It does it all. It's actually coarse enough, that you can establish a new apex - which logically takes longer than on a coarser stone like the 120, 220, 320 (which btw dish out a lot more than the 1000 and won't last as long). And you can use it to get the edge to final form so that it is razor sharp or maintain the blade. It's all in the technique. If I could get only one stone, it's the Shapton Pro 1000.

    • @jeffhicks8428
      @jeffhicks8428 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      all of those are excellent choices. You are only missing the 2k, that's the only thing you're "missing" out on. That might be the stone in the line. The 8k is superfluous if you have the 12k, you don't need both. The 220 is also a SIC stone like the 320, but the 320 is a much better overall stone. Night and day actually. Very limited use for the 220, I don't enjoy using it. The 120 on the other hand is white alumna and it's a beast for course grinding. I am a stone addict, have lost count.

    I purchased this exact stone (1000 grit) some 8ish years ago to be the stone I learned on, with the intention of buying a "fancier" stone/more grits once I was sharpening reliably on it.
    Well, I never bothered "upgrading", probably never will. I use it several times a month. This stone (with some help from a leather strop) has kept all of my kitchen knives, outdoor knives, and axes sharp for years and will continue to do so for a LONG time. I have flattened it maybe twice over the years with some sandpaper.
    For the price it's actually silly how good these stones are. I've used MUCH more expensive stones of all kinds, and this thing goes toe to toe with any of 'em.

    This is a good stone. But, I have followed Rob Cosman's recommendations for sharpening wood plane irons and found spectacular results. A 1000 grit Trend diamond stone followed by a polish with a 23000 grit Shapton ceramic stone. Mirror finish on the cutting edge and amazingly sharp plane irons, chisels, lathe tools and any knife. The two stage process is the fastest because you're reshaping with the 1000 grit and polishing with the 23000. A moderately dull knife can be sharpened in 1.5 minutes and the edge will hold for a long time (depending on the steel).

      I have almost every stone either brand makes and it makes little difference for most uses. If anything the chosera is more versatile in that it does better on the wide bevels of traditional Japanese knives. The shapon pros in particular are known for being the hardest and slowest wearing stones while still working very good. The naniwa chosera are more friable and honestly do leave a better scratch pattern but it's irrelevant unless you're doing something other than edges. In fact for doing edges on normal steels I'd prefer the shapton pros most of the time. it's largely a matter of preference, one isn't better than the other.

    I've just watched your video (from about 5 years ago) about sharpening recurve blades, because a couple of my old kitchen knives are slightly recurved from too many encounters with the steel.
    In that video, you demonstrated using the edge of a Norton stone, but warned against the risk of rounding that edge, or chipping the stone or blade with anything more than the lightest pressure.
    You also briefly mentioned using a narrow stone, about 1/2" wide. How about using a Shapton standing on its side? Being a single grit (unlike the Norton), it seems like the side is as good as the face for sharpening. Using the side should also be less likely to round the edge, as well as reducing the need for super light pressure.
    Obviously you'd need something to hold the stone in its side, but that's easy enough.
    Anyway, that's my bright idea idea for today. I'm happy for folk to shoot it down, try it, debunk it, or whatever.
    BTW, I ordered a Shapton as soon as I'd watched the video, and I'm really pleased with it, so thank you!

      I have two more shapton coming so im all in at this point😉 Its a great stone for the money for sure. I think you're still going to get some corner rounding, which could inhibit your Sharpening, depending on the type of knives that you sharpen but at some point in order to sharpen a recurve, you're gonna need to use the edge of the stone. So it is what ot is haha.

    After spending a lot of money on crappy stones I purchased the Shapton 1000 grit. However my problem remins that I cannot get the angle right and my knives turn duller than when I start. For this reason I went for electric sharpeners and that was not successful because after a while the discs lost their grit and the company would not sell replacement discs. Now I am trying belt sharpener by work sharp. Thank you for an excellent video as always.

      Sounds like you're spending a good deal of money on sharpening tools. If that's the case, might I suggest a good angle control system like the TSPROF Kadet Pro?
      That should solve all your consistency issues. It ain't cheap, but at this rate, you will soon have spent more on the myriad of cheap solutions that don't work for you.
      But if it's still too much, I've heard the KME Precision Knife Sharpening System is pretty decent, too, and costs less than a half of the TSPROF.

      I have the chance to get the shapton glass 1000 for 50 bucks, would this be a good one trick pony for a sharpening setup with a good edge compared to this korumaku 1000? thanks!

    • @haqvor
      @haqvor 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ezbakeovenhands I only have experience with the shapton glass and I think that they are great. You can't go wrong with a shapton glass stone and $50 is a great price that is hard to pass on. From what I hear the difference between the glass and the korumaku lines are minimal the main difference is that the glass stones are a bit harder and wears a bit slower. Either stone will serve you very well.
      Having only a 1000 grit is a bit fine in my opinion. If you have a dull knife it will take a lot of effort to grind away enough metal to make an apex with a 1000. I would recommend something in the range of 200-400 as a first stone to establish the edge and go to a 1000 to refine it. I have a glass 220 that literally gives me an apex on a pretty dull knife in less than 10 strokes on each side. Unless you have a strong urge for a pretty mirror polish a 220, 1000, and a strop is enough for a very sharp working edge.
