Concealer lips were the sh+t back in the day. Guilty of having the "I have no lips" look about 10 years ago. 🤪

Oh my god, I was a child back then and I used to steal my sister's makeup and use the concealer stick as a lipstick oh gawwd
I used such a pale lipstick and I looked tragically sick. And then we moved to dark lip liner with the same pale lipstick. It made our lips look dirty😱 next we rocked the 1/2 frosted blue with 1/2 frosted pink. With mile high aqua net teased to the Gods- crunchy hair!!! So much black eyelashes née. Good gosh growing up in the 80’s really was fun!
I hated that I had big lips in the 00s. when kylie lips became a thing I was like bitch ✌️😙

Nah the cat and winged eyeliner doesn't suit everyone but we are pressured by all social media to have it.
If it comforts you: i'm 15 and started off with the blue eye shadow too, zero blending, just the eyeshadow, looked just like you think it does.
We still get the ugly phase just ours is imprinted on the Internet, my no mascara and purple eyeshadow days haunt me 😂

I'm glad I'm not the only one who went through the pencil-thin-eyebrows with dark-eyeliner-on-lower-lashline phase. 🙈
Nina Cortina in middle school I literally wouldn’t go to school without black eyeliner around my eyes and it made my eyes look so small. No I don’t dare put eyeliner on my waterline. I also thought it was a swell idea to put dark red lipstick on as eyeshadow. That creased like crazy every single time but hey at least I got a lot of practice and learned from my past mistakes.
Add some way too light concealer under the eyes to the mix and that was me year 2000. I looked like Ozzy Osbourne's lost daughter... 🤦🏻♀️
The hallmark if the 90s. *Sigh* I don't miss that a bit. That and the like, black lipliner with nude lipstick. Back then it looked good on nobody.
@@violet_saint 😂 I never did that thankfully. But I did the considerably darker lipliner. As you say, it did not look good on anyone....
I didn't pluck my eyebrows back then but I wore the dark eyeliner pencil on my lower lashline. It dragged my eye down so much lol

You should review jenna marbles makeup! Shes the prime example of someone who doesnt like makeup as much because shes so used to the way youtubers and intagramers do it. I feel like you could really help her out!

My philosophy back in the days was like everything has to match...so I wore a purple sweatshirt, with purple earrings and put on purple eyeshadow all over my eyes...I was very cool these days 🤔...not 😅 but through channels like yours I learned a lot and got better and I'm very thankful for that 🙏🏻😊

I feel like one thing we all learned with time was: lighting. Some people were good at makeup however the way they took the picture might've made the makeup looks weird.

Same thing. I used to watch all those beautubers and ask myself "why do my under eyes always crease while theirs look fabulous?". I used so much product and wasted so much money to look like the Sahara desert. His concealer technique conceals perfectly my awful genetic dark circles, which I had to pile so much product to hide before. My makeup routine was tiring, it took me 2 hours to get ready (literally the time it takes to do basic drag). Now I can get beautiful and detailed looks done around one hour. Robert was the makeup angel to save me from all my worries and self loathing.

That last “smoky” eye was ME every day in 2005-2006. If I would have submitted a picture it would have looked just like that! Love you Robert!

Can I just say how MUCH I appreciate your little blurb at the beginning about thinking about what we would be saying to our younger selves if we are overly critical looking back at old pictures. In my mid 30's I'm really learning the importance of loving my inner child/younger self and it's helping me feel happier and more confident as an adult.
This was a blast to the past, I’m 20 but I remember growing up watching my mom and aunt do that super Chola dark lip line and lots of browns, and her eyebrows were tweezed super thin and it was just a line above her eyes.
As the times changed so did her technique and of course the way she did her eyebrows, and I of course was in the era of starting makeup with ONLY a black eyeliner in the bottom waterline while I couldn’t afford enough makeup to look super emo 😂 we’ve evolved so much as a makeup community, I’m excited for the future.
You’re right younger me would have been upset if I got called out for my makeup 🤣

1) Robert is so nice about his educational critiques. If all teachers were this thoughtful and kind about it, more of us would have made better efforts to improve rather than take it personally or be like “🤬you! I’ll do what I want!”.
2) That whole intro about being 17 and getting ready to “go out to the disco” to dance to the “Titanic” song”, spraying yourself with too much glitter and your clothes being made of flammable material sounds like Robert is speaking from personal experience ...It might also explain why Robert isn’t a fan of glitter 😂.

I love what you said in the beginning about not being too harsh on our past selves. I think that is an absolutely amazing advice about the way to think about life in general (not just about how we styled ourselves 🤣). We all know that we personally are our absolute worst critic (unless I guess you are super narcissistic, lol), and being too hard on ourselves about the mistakes we made, and anything like that, in the past can have long lasting negative effects. We just have to remember that we have grown and changed in such amazing ways, and continue to allow ourselves that forever. ❤😘🤗
I figured out how to perfect my blending 3 days ago. I am so so proud of my looks now. I have been training myself off and on since November. If it weren't for you I'd look like casper and I'd still have no idea what blending was. I have been watching for about 3 months now and I appreciate all your advice and tips!! Love the podcast!!!

OMG the glow ups! I love it. I also think we have to give some credit to the actual products too. The products for the average person to obtain to do their makeup were shit. Absolutely shit. Now with newer technology even in drug store has really allowed the every day person to perfect makeup techniques. Also the market exploding with social media education such as your lovely self. So this is was an amazing video. Admittedly in the 90s everyone has a dark comma brow. That you to everyone who submitted these pictures. All their gorgeous faces.
I started off wearing smudged black eyeliner and....that's it. My makeup knowledge and skills have improved in short bursts, starting in the early days of TH-cam with Pursebuzz, Panacea81, and Michelle Phan....and then I had NO idea what was happening with makeup until recently when I was clearing out my old expired makeup and turned to TH-cam to see what was new. Good Lord. What a can of worms. Part of me wished I hadn't opened it, but then I discovered your channel and OH MY GOODNESS I have never felt so encouraged, supported, and empowered by a TH-camr's content. Your videos have taught me more in the last two weeks than everyone else I've watched in the last twelve years. Love you!!!
As a complete beginner, I definitely want to see more of these. Makes me feel less terrible about my current skill level.

Those pale pink glossy lips with pencil arched brows was a definite 90's early 2000 look! And definitely took me back to the blue light disco times!
We thought we were popping at the time, with large teased hair with half a bottle of hair spray in the hair, it wasn't done right, unless your hair was crunchy to the touch! 💕
I think a lot of these glow ups also demonstrate how makeup trends have sort of changed over the years too as makeup has become more advanced. It's really cool.

I used to watch lots of beauty influencers on TH-cam for makeup tips and so many times would get frustrated because it looked great on them and like a shitty cakey mess on me. (Baking I’m talking about you here. 😂) and then I stumbled upon Robert and actually learn so much more from you! Yes I still watch the “beauty gurus” because it’s fun and I like to see their makeup looks. But now I know how to tweak things to make it look good on me as well. You are an angel!

I hope you do this again, I want to enter lmao! I still have loads of room for improvement but I just started last year like end of december. TH-cam and Google images made it so easy for me to be at least decent so quickly, along with my ability to learn kinda quick and being a former art student.

when i was about 18 i went through a phase of purging my socials of old awful pictures of myself. i regret it now, because they were memories, and also videos like these make me wish i could look back and appreciate how much i've improved! luckily i managed to find an old sharpie brow selfie - thank god i grew out of that!
