I think it’s because of the difference in mediums, people expect a lot more to be shown in a movie vs a show, like in the movie you expect to see the magic lessons or Glinda and Alphaba not getting along but because of the nature of a musical and the suspension of disbelief that the audience has the stage production can gloss over those things and just say the lessons happened and the two hate each other through a song and the audience understands. Another example would be Hamilton if they made a movie (not just a recording of the stage production) you’d have to add a lot of in between scenes to make it flow in a movie format. I think we tend to underestimate just how much suspension of disbelief is involved with a musical and how much the audience will forgive, especially compared to a movie where we need suspension of disbelief less and less with the use of CGI. Personally I think that from what I saw from the trailer they’re handling the transition pretty well. It also probably has something to do with money and awards.

I was overwhelmed with emotion when I first saw this. This musical is THE musical that made me fall in love with theatre. I have been following the production of this film for years, and I am SO happy that it's finally coming out. Even though it's only the first act, I am so excited for Act 2. Ariana and Cynthia look gorgeous and perfect as Glinda and Elphaba and I am so excited to see their performances. The set, the costumes, the practical and special effects all look so gorgeous. I am beyond ecstatic for this.
You must be super young if it made you fall in love with theater. The classics should make one fall in love with theater no offense. You never watched West Side Story or Grease? Those are like rights of passage for any kid who wants to be on stage. Wicked made me like Frozen 😂.
I'm going to be running into the theater and cry when Ariana Grande astounds me with her singing, and when Cynthia Erivo makes me scream with tears in my eyes during her rendition of "Defying Gravity." I’m ok with turning broadway shows into movie. 3000$. That’s how much I spent to watch the Phantom of the Opera. 200$ for the tickets, 1,100$ for the hotel, 900$ for the plane tickets, and like 300$+ on miscellaneous stuff like food, gifts and other. And that’s just an estimate. Not everyone can afford that.

Yes that's why I enjoy the idea of adaptations, gives a vast range of an audience the opportunity to watch something they may not have been able to in a different area ( Broadway show etc)
The iconic “Ahhhhh” at the end of defying gravity didn’t give me chills like usual. It kinda sounded a little rough. I hope it will be better in the movie

I’m guessing you haven’t seen the Broadway/theater performance. Wicked isn’t just the origin story of Elphaba and Glinda, but those other characters as well, so it’s not surprising they’re in them. Now, where they take those stories in the movie could be slightly different, but it’s not surprising they’re in there
My jaw dropped seeing Dorothy and the crew! I'm a HUGE original 1939 WoOz fan but don't know much about Wicked.... thought it was a prequel type thing. So this made me even more excited!
Wicked is both a prequel and companion piece to the Wizard of Oz. In the stage production, the first act is all takes place before the Wizard of Oz, and the second act starts just before, then continues through to about the end of the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy is referenced a few times and makes some off-stage cameos, but you never actually see her, just the effects of her actions. Most of the other characters are actually in it though and play an important role in the story of Wicked - the Lion, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Man. And of course, Elphaba and Glinda (the witches) are the main characters. Plus the wizard himself of course.
I’m confused why people think that a prequel to the wizard of oz about the wicked witch wouldn’t reference events in the wizard of oz lol the wicked series is literally like a companion the the 39’ movie and Baum books they tell the story of elphabas life and her descendants after dorothy even returns at some point
As a fan of the original myself, the moment I saw the book "Wicked" I had to buy it. Hearing it was later a Broadway musical, I wished I could afford to go to New York to see it. Now at least we can all see the movie. But honestly, I highly recommend the book. So good.

Because this movie is a two parter. The Dorothy gang only show up in the second act of the musical.@@dott8348
The only nitpick I have is that they didn't use music from the actual musical for a good portion of the trailer. Like the beginning part of No One Mourns the Wicked would make really good trailer music
maybe for part 2? it makes more sense to use Defying Gravity on this one
In fairness, keep in mind this is merely a teaser. They generally just worldbuild in this one. They'll release a proper trailer soon enough where we can see more :)
It's a trend recently to hide that musical films are musicals... see: Mean Girls, The Color Purple, & Wonka. It's stupid af imo, and doubly so with WICKED, since everyone and their mamas are aware WICKED is a musical. Who are they trying to hide it from... But yeah, this trailer is still cool IMO, but as a musical fan, I would have liked to see more of the MUSIC part of it 🤦🏻♀🤦🏻♀

I was overwhelmed with emotion when I first saw this. This musical is THE musical that made me fall in love with theatre. I’m ok with turning broadway shows into movie.
Imagine if you spent that much and didn’t like the show😂 cause I did not like Wicked. “Phantom” is the best though.
@@reginaberger8406 luckily I saw the movie and loved it. Then I rented the 25th anniversary show with Ramin Karamloo idk how to spell his name but whatever. I also loved it so I knew I wasn’t gonna spend 3,000$ on something I didn’t like.
Lmao are you stupid? The people who live near the theatres where they have broadway shows can easily afford to go.
Yes that's why I enjoy the idea of adaptations, gives a vast range of an audience the opportunity to watch something they may not have been able to in a different area ( Broadway show etc)
Anyone dumb enough to spend $3000 on two hours of entertainment is not someone worth listening to.
The iconic “Ahhhhh” at the end of defying gravity didn’t give me chills like usual. It kinda sounded a little rough. I hope it will be better in the movie

GFY Universal, and your little green witch too.
Okay, I see Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man and the Lion. But I don’t know why they’re here.
Think of Elphaba and Dorothy’s stories like Joker and Batman. You can’t have one without the other.
I’m guessing you haven’t seen the Broadway/theater performance. Wicked isn’t just the origin story of Elphaba and Glinda, but those other characters as well, so it’s not surprising they’re in them. Now, where they take those stories in the movie could be slightly different, but it’s not surprising they’re in there
Oh, okay then.
My jaw dropped seeing Dorothy and the crew! I'm a HUGE original 1939 WoOz fan but don't know much about Wicked.... thought it was a prequel type thing. So this made me even more excited!
It is largely a prequel, but some of it takes palce at the same time as Dorothy's adventure so in the play there's a few off-screen cameos.
So good.
@@catsmeow374 it will come to the broadway series to the closest big city to you. you don't necessarily have to see it in NY to see it on stage. I have seen it in Chicago and Cincinnati, both were stunning productions.
