Extra detail for the hammer bro spirit: with both Yoshi and the assist trophy present, it references how Hammer Bros often appear with two of them at a time.
Yoshi itself could also reference how Yoshis are often found in the same stages as Hammer Bros in the NSMB series.

I feel like people don't appreciate spirit battles. To me, it's like event battles but every battle is based around a character and I think that fits so well with trying to represent characters that aren't in Smash already. True video game celebration, and if you understand the references that's like a bonus.
Agreed. I love spirit battles. All the nods and references to other series all amazing and really shows Sakurai's love of these franchises. It even inspired me to create my own spirit battles.
I love them, but miss the alternate conditions of event battles. One stock battles kind of limit the possibilities.
I'm in love with the concept of spirits! It makes really spicy and unique battles and collecting them all is also both fun and frustrating
And trust me: I am only *one* spirit away from completion
Something I’ve noticed is that the Spirit list for Mario is separated into categories.
18-20: Items
21-30: Other forms of characters
31-35: Toads + Waluigi
36-66: Mario series-wide enemies and bosses
67-70: Super Mario Sunshine
71-75: Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
76 & 77: Super Mario 3D World
78-80: Super Mario Odyssey
81-93: Mario Kart vehicles
94-112: Mario RPGs
113-133: Sports and miscellaneous spinoffs

I’d easy 36-80 are more like first 2D debuting characters and then 3D debuting characters

All the series have categories, usually main characters, minor characters, enemies, and items and sorted by the oldest to newest game then any mini-series

Yes. It's finally happening. I've been waiting for the Spirit Origins.
One thing to note about the Metal Mario fight being set in Great Cave Offensive is that it might also represent the cavern in Hazy Maze Cave where you unlock the Metal Mario power-up, which itself was the inspiration for the Meta Crystal stage of Smash 64.

4:26 Actually it plays the theme of Melty Monster Galaxy. Which is fitting because it has a separate mission dedicated to Rock Mario for whatever reason
Don’t forgot to point out the Spirit’s types (Attack, Defence, Grab & Neutral) as well since they are also clever references to the character.
After enjoying watching you point out all of the Classic Mode references, I am VERY excited for this series about spirit battle references.

I love how many references they try to put in, some being genius like Yusuke using Chrom, since they have the same EN and JP VA, as well as both being blue haired sword wielding dudes.
4:27 This is actually Melty MONSTER Galaxy from SMG2. Not Melty MOLTEN from SMG1 like you said. The Rock powerup wasn't in SMG1 and Melty MONSTER's second star is a long rolling course you have to survive as Rock Mario plus there's a secret star where you play bowling as Rock Mario.
Makes sense for you to tackle these! I’m also looking forward to the return of the Victory Screen Origin series. Hopefully, that comes back soon!
Something to add to the Koopa Spirit:
When someone jumps on Squirtle while he's on the ground, he'll flip over onto his back and be left vulnerable for a bit. Subtle reference to the shell creepers from the OG Mario Bros

They could've used Super Mario Bros. 3 Medley for Hammer Bro spirit battle since it includes the Hammer Bros theme, but honestly that's not the worse case of missed opportunities, Castlevania ones are even low...

Super and Poison Mushrooms in Toad's battle could reference his perks in the Mario Kart games. In most of the games he gets mushrooms or triple mushrooms from item boxes more often, and in Super Mario Kart, his special ability as a CPU is throwing poison mushrooms at the other racers.
Spirit Battles are one of my favorite things in Ultimate, so I'm happy that you're doing this series! Keep up the good work!👍

I just realized that another reason Bullet Bill Spirit has it in the Mushroom Kingdom stage is because there's a Bullet Bill cannon in the background
Never understood why they didn't add Metal Mario stage, I know it isn't that impressive but it was so fitting for a final stage battle against anyone, a final destination you might say

I absolutely appreciate you doing this Aaron. I am so interested in learning about the spirits on the misc. Section where the lesser known spirits are and since I've never played an actual fe game aside form 3h, I can learn about the other heroes.

About the Toad spirit.
The Toad featured in Super Mario Bros. 2 is Blue Toad, which is the same Toad that would later be seen in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, New Super Mario Bros. U, Super Mario 3D World, and later on in Super Mario Maker 2. The one Toad commonly seen in spinoffs is a separate Toad entirely, with his distinction being his blue coat and red cap.

An extra reference with Squirtle and Koopa Troopa: Squirtle's side special can be jumped on similarly to a koopa shell. Also... I can't wait until you get to the 'miscellaneous' spirit section. Nintendo had thought showing a bunch of characters from the main roster series wasn't enough, so there are a bunch of DS titles thrown in that like no one knows or cares about (like Num Diddly, no good footage existed last time I checked).

12:24 I think Waluigi's stage should've been Mario Circuit or Figure 8 Circuit, because while N64 Peach's Castle is a good reference to the console and era he was introduced in, it doesn't make sense for him to appear there. Like if u agree.

There are also the skills of each Spirit (Well, those that HAVE skills) to be discussed and what they represent.
(P.S.: After looking up these Spirits and their effects, it should be noted that some references are not always clear and a few are quite obscure. These are the best I could come up with. Also, the "+" and "-" next to some skills references the up arrows and down arrows next to them, respectively. This indicates that the attribute in question is either boosted or reduced, respectively.)
Super Mushroom: Stats + after Eating
Upon getting a Super Mushroom in the mainline Mario games, Mario gets bigger, is able to break the Brick Blocks, and can take a single hit from an enemy without dying.
Fire Flower: Fire Flower Equipped
Pretty self-explanatory. Shoots out a stream of fire, just like how the original Fire Flower enabled Mario to throw fireballs.
Super Star: First-Strike Advantage
Touching a Super Star grants you invincibility for a short time, and surrounds you with shiny sparkles in this game.
Metal Mario: Weight +
Being made of metal, Metal Mario is slower and heavier than usual, but is harder to launch.
Boo Mario: Lightweight
Boo Mario is able to float through the air with no trouble.
Rock Mario: Physical Attack +
Rock Mario is able to defeat enemies and break obstacles by simply rolling into them.
Gold Mario: Super Armor
Being Gold in Ultimate makes you harder to launch.
Fox Luigi: Easier Dodging
A vague reference to Kitsune Luigi's ability to become a stone statue and avoid damage momentarily in *3D Land.*
Flying Squirrel Toad: Toss & Meteor
References the Flying Squirrel Toad's upward flying motion in *New Super Mario Bros. U* as well as Toad's impressive strength in *Super Mario Bros. 2.*
Baby Peach: Air Defense +
A reference to her role of having to be rescued by the Mario Bros and her aerial movement.
Cat Princess Peach: Weight -
With the power of the Super Bell, Peach is able to move faster and climb up walls with ease.
Peach (Wedding): Critical-Health Healing
At the start of *Super Mario Odyssey,* Mario is badly injured when trying to rescue Peach from Bowser, but throughout the game, he recovers and is able to complete his mission.
Toad: Enhances to Captain Toad
This displays how one Toad eventually became his own character as Captain Toad in *Super Mario Galaxy.* The skill [Item Gravitation] is a reflection of Captain Toad's status as a treasure hunter.
Toadette: A Master Spirit in World of Light. She runs the Ruins Expedition, which is just a reflection of her skills as a treasure hunter.
Toadsworth: Ramblin' Evil Mushroom Equipped
References the Toads in general, being Mushroom people.
Waluigi: Foot Attack +
Waluigi has long, lanky legs, which he uses to attack as an Assist Trophy.
Goomba: Foot Attack +
A reference to how easily Goombas can be defeated, simply by stomping on them.
Koopa Troopa: Green Shell Equipped
After jumping on a Koopa Troopa, they retreat into their shells. You can then pick the shell up and throw them at other enemies.
Hammer Bro: Jump +
Hammer Bros will often jump when throwing their hammers, allowing for a greater range.
Lakitu & Spiny: Weight -
Lakitu rides on a cloud, flying through the air.
Blooper: Weight -
Bloopers float around in the water, moving around with ease.
Bullet Bill: Enhances to Banzai Bill
A Banzai Bill is just a bigger and more powerful Bullet Bill. The skill [Impact Run] is reminiscent of the Bills' ability to damage Mario by moving towards him.

The toad battle spawning poison mushrooms could be a reference to SMB2 (japan) introduction poison mushrooms where as SMB 2 US was where toad as a character was first introduced

Actually with Boo Mario, the gravity effects refrence the Low gravity and High gravity depending where you might be.

Hope you can talk about what does every spirit do (did i spell that right? English is not my first language 😅). For example, why does the Duster Spirit gives you more Foot Attack? Or why does the Paz Ortega Andrade gives you a lot of Bob-ombs?
Not familiar with Duster to explain him (I'll have to look up info on Mother 3 to do so), but as for Paz...
In Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, Paz had been captured by XOF and they managed to implant bombs inside of her. Big Boss's team were able to remove one of them, but they didn't know that there was a second bomb, and it detonated. This severely crippled Big Boss and cost Miller his arm.

And with Duster, he has his leg disabled in Mother 3. He can’t walk or run very well…
