I bought my G310GS for exactly what BMW marketing recommends - trips around town, back roads, dirt roads, gravel roads and light off road. I don't ride highways (motorways). The baby GS can cruise at highway speed but it's wrung out and buzzing a bit. I strap a 55 liter roll top waterproof backpack to the rack and pillion and hardly know it's back there, and that's all I need for ultralight primitive camping. I ride slow off road so the soft suspension and alloy rims aren't a problem for me. In fact, I prefer them. My hard core dual sport days are behind me. I love my baby GS.
Very cool looking bike. Everyone calls these bikes beginners bikes but I see more older guys buying them because they want a small adventure bike that can take them down some easy trails and back roads. My days of pulling a full on dirt bike out of mud holes are over. These small bikes are easy to ride on dirt roads and very capable on the highway. I went with the Kawasaki Versys x300 for its twin cyl motor. It's a nice change from my big cruiser. These little entry bikes my just turn out to be big sellers to the baby boomers than anything else. And like you I am not interested in fighting with a big adventure bike while off road. I always thought that was crazy. Great to see other small bikes out there....
So much fun doing light offroad, but this would be a great city bike for the daily commute. Has enough power and is light and nimble, great for filtering and getting out of tight spots. I can totally see why I want one... LOL!
Thanks for the fabulous review. I've had one on order since March of this year. Been riding 35 years and have had over 30 bikes.....so not just for beginners as you said :). I plan on using it for daily commuting, touring and just having fun! I love being able to use all the power of a bike, which small bikes can and will do. Currently in my stable here in Canada: 2013 Ninja 300, 1987 Yamaha TZR250, 1986 Yamaha YSR50 and 1988 Yamaha TDR50 :)
Best review of the little BMW yet! I saw this bike at the Cleveland Bike show in Feb 2017 and sat on it and instantly wanted one. Like holding a new puppy at the store! Damn you, now i want one even more !
Love this review, one of the best I've ever seen. Thank you, sir. You have really given me something to think about, I've been looking at the little adventure bikes and this one atm is just ahead of the vstrom 250, mostly because of the extra power
I know this is an older review, but excellent all the same. After years on big sportsbikes etc. Im after something small and light to have backroad fun on. I reckon this fits the bill perfectly
Hello from the USA (sorry) Loved this vid / review you done on the little GS. Yours and a few more and I knew I had to have one. So 2 weeks ago I got a new one. I am early 40's and this makes the 22nd bike I have owned. And in all honesty, I think it is the most *FUN* to ride, most overall enjoyable, and 3rd most comfortable I have owned! ( The Vstrom with a aftermarket seat, and my Honda GL being 1&2) Thank you for this awesome vid. :-)
Coyote, after a year what’s your review about the bike? I’m planning to buy one to use it for a on road and off road 1000 miles round trips, from Texas to the North of the country.
7:10 Your camera operator needs a pat on the back, great camera work during your crash. I sincerely appreciate your enthusiasm and honesty, don't be so hard on yourself, you ride better than most of us.
Great enthusiastic review! Welcome to the exciting new world of reasonable size adventure bikes. Go get some soft luggage and explore like never before! Juan Browne RRP CB500X, Nevada City, Ca.
blancolirio Hey Juan... it was your review with Jenny that has me hooked on this amazing entry level bike... if things go according to plan I will be a proud owner next spring... thanks so much... keep on keepin' on.
Very cool video. Quite informative! I have been touring and offroading on this bike for some time now. I must say I am loving it. Riding the bike as well as sharing my experiences with the bike on my channel.
7:02 for the crash :) - no man you're not an idiot at all, we all did (do) it - standing up would have helped to increase the grip and the control - it does look very light to pick up and those HP are more than enough for some easy green lanes on a sunday morning
damn. I just discovered this bike and despite the fact its awesome power/weight wise it even looks nice - unlike many other new bikes! I am SO getting this this year to start my adventure riding over several days. getting rid of my cagiva canyon 600 and my CR250 for this. I even give up my suzuki DR650 dream for this because I never owned a new bike in my life and its something I want to try.
Thanks John. I've only just come back to riding after years away because of this gem of a bike. I started in the 1970's with a TS 90J Suzuki... Always loved little bikes despite the idea in Oz that you didn't have any balls if you rode anything less than a 750. Well, been there too and road-raced even sidecars as the monkey! My G310GS is seriously the most comfortable bike I've ever ridden. Leaves all the tin-tops for dead from the traffic lights and is totally happy on dirt roads. The same build as you, what more could you want? Dorky? No, it's just a great bike! 😏
I test drove one of these, and am an older rider where the big V-twin doesn't hold its appeal to me, I just want to tootle around and find a fire road and explore or just stop and listen to the wilderness. One of the things to get used to is the high rev engine, the Versys 300-X is the same way. I think next spring I will have and ADV bike am leaning towards the Versys though, because it has a twin cylinder and seems a bit smoother.
Hi mate, i have to say that the A2 motorcycles are more then enough on the dirt, 35 to 47 horsepower is plenty of power for beginners or an intermediate drivers and if you'll be able to master the A2 bikes off-road you will do the fun of your life. BTW thanks for a great review as always and the best content ever sir. I really love all Bennetts channels and platforms, top reviews with top content and knowledge, not like the other BS on this platform. Keep it like that and give other youtubers an example of how professionals mastering this segment. BTW sorry for my english.
I'm keeping my f800gs but cool to see a beginners bike at an affordable price. Would be great if they made a twin that fits in between the 310 and the f700gs/f800gs
Well, there was the 650gs, which had some flaws due to the downgrade from the "f" class to the the "g" class, and now it has been discontinued. Such a shame
Martin Fisker until 2012 there was almost no need for a dakar version (dakar is the old sertao version). After that, the 650gs dropped in many little aspects, suspension, wheels, lights, display, buttons on the handle, the price didn't even drop, and there was almost no coverage for model by the manufacturer whatsoever (some people here in germany even thought the 650 died in 2012, and had no idea that the g650 exists). It still is an awesome bike, I personally had great fun with it during my first steps on riding, but there is a disappointing difference between the old f650 an the "new" g650 (even the sertao). I agree, 500 would be perfect, but 140kg is way too light for a gs in my opinion (plus it would be almost impossible to achieve). I believe 500cc, 180kg, 50hp would be a dreamy bike for a biker with a little bit of experience
Max Teichelmann Maybe i will have to try and old GS one day. I ride a transalp, which gets close to 180 (probably 190) when low on fuel, and thats fine and dandy untill you have to get over a wet log in mud. Modern bikes are much easier to handle even though they are heavier, but in the given situation, almost only the raw weight matters - and skill of course, but i cant buy that :)

So in your opinion, how would it stack up against a 250cc dual-sport/lite-ADV bike like the Yamaha WR250R or the Kawi KLX250S/SF? How would it perform, both on and off road, compared to a bike like the previously mentioned?

Rich was with me most of the way round; he'd been filming further up the track until I said 'come and shoot down here - I can get the back out'. Sadly my ambition far outweighed my talent. John
@@bennettsbikesocial Thinking of your lack of skill as a lack of talent is self-limiting. Few people have true talent. Most people, even really good ones, practiced a lot to get good. I imagine you haven't tried to build your off-road skills on light motocross bikes?
Meh, maybe it was that bump that threw you off your line to the inside but it certainly was convenient that it happened right in front of the camera. Anyway it was a great review and it got me to check out this little bike but in the end it’s just not quite powerful enough to keep up with traffic on the interstate.
I can assure you that it wasn't staged. Rich (the video guy) was trying to get some action footage at good spots. It was my third or fourth pass and I remember saying "watch this - I can get the back out". There were two small crests in that section and I bounced the front up a bit as I tried to get the gas on to look like I knew what I was doing (clearly I didn't). With the front not getting any traction, and trying to kick the back a bit, it all washed out on me. It'd be pretty stupid to force myself to crash, not least because there's then the walk of shame to find the BMW techs and apologise for the fact that they have to get it looking brand new again for the next wave of journalists in a world launch. It's surprisingly nippy - happy to cruise at 70mph, but if you're predominantly on the motorway it's not the best option. John

Mate Bennetts Bike can u make more review of this bike? Or maybe comparation review versus the suzuki vstorm 250?. Those entry lever adv bike gonna really good in my country.
your crash looked almost staged because your go pro was suddenly off the bike and on the side of the road. not sure what to think about your offroading style.
True, but as I said - it's as off-road as I go. Of course, if we're talking accurately then most of what any of us would ride in the UK isn't 'off-road' at all. Any byway or green lane is a road. The argument is that this is an adventure bike, and its 'off-tarmac' capabilities are, for me at least, excellent. It's no motocrosser of course, but I'd say that for my abilities (which I'd consider average), it's as capable as the R1200GS. And I'm far more likely to wander off the beaten track on this... I owned a CRM250 years aso. That's more of an off-roader, but it was hell on the road. My WR250 wasn't that great on road either. And that broke me. John
I rode a much lighter dirt track in France on my XSR700 when I took it from England to Spain on back roads... it definitely wasn't as easy as on the G310GS! John
After 25 years with no MC, the G310GS is perfect. Light enough to pick up - I have done that 10 times. I'm 74 and love the dirt roads

Spoke wheels would be better
I initially thought spoke wheels would be better but this is a lightweight bike that's not meant to be ridden hard and fast off road. Riding at slower ADV speed, even with 40 pounds of camping equipment and tools, instead of racing on a dual sport, shouldn't damage the alloy rims or bottom out the soft suspension. If your idea of adventure is racing on technical single track, then yes, a more hardcore dual sport or dirt bike will be better. I'm 60 and always rode smaller dual sport bikes. All an average rider would need as a first bike but please put some bar risers on it for comfort and off road !!!
I'm 6'2" (188 cm) and 30mm bar risers improved the G310GS fit quite a bit... seated or standing. Probably not needed (or wanted) for 5'9" and below.

John
I love this bike I wish I could afford it
pcp
Today my Anhelo broke down for the 435234323....th time and i am thinking in switching in 310gs although i fancy the f650 :D
wrong tires for loose dirt but neat review
Wrong skills more like (as in none!)! John
Hi, what is your helmet?
It's a Nexx Voyager... link in the written article: www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/reviews/bikes/bmw/2017-bmw-g310gs-review/2017-bmw-g310gs-first-review
Bennetts Bike thank you
Still, the logical choice would be Versys 300, more power,2 cylinder, still capable of mild offroading
And spoked wheels not cast
I sat on The 300x it's a really comfy reach to the bars etc. Good ergoes
Only one drawback....the ABS is not switchable.
How tall are you sir?
5'10". Cheers, John
@@bennettsbikesocial ok sir.. So the bike it's not small looking for a tall guy like you 😊👍
Just wondering, how tall is the rider
I'm 5'10. Cheers, John
@@bennettsbikesocial Thanks for answering.
Good crash mate. Hope u okay😉
Ha, fine ta! Pride not so good...
Mate Bennetts Bike can u make more review of this bike? Or maybe comparation review versus the suzuki vstorm 250?. Those entry lever adv bike gonna really good in my country.
Its on its way... And here's a written review of it for now: www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/reviews/bikes/bmw/2017-bmw-g310gs-review
Thankyou mate Bennetts Bike ! You’re the best😍
I like the concept but the Versys 300 ticks more boxes for me
Jay B What do you prefer about the Versys 300?
The Versys is more of a tourer because of the engine characteristics, whereas this will be good on both the highways and offroad imo.
your crash looked almost staged because your go pro was suddenly off the bike and on the side of the road. not sure what to think about your offroading style.
Motorcycle sport & leisure former editor!
John Milbank excellent video, keep up the good work!
Top speed?
Sorry - going by the speedo on the motorway, I saw 90mph, but it did seem to have a bit left.
TMR 140 km/h
Honda crf250l is so much better and parts are cheaper, you can get it with supermoto tyres or offroad tyres
only better off road
emmcey get a set of supermoto wheels from a CRF250M from BikerZbits in thailand and there you have a good road bike.
Is it this bike in the US? :/
Not yet but soon
i hate it when a reviewer read its specs.
Kind of the point here though - comparing the value of this with the 1200. Hope you find what you're looking for though. John
7:00 you are welcome
thats not an off road track mate, its just un-sealed road...
John
un-sealed road is off-road
I rode a much lighter dirt track in France on my XSR700 when I took it from England to Spain on back roads... it definitely wasn't as easy as on the G310GS! John
could be cheaper!
Tank capacity is the worst
