I photographed Space in the 90s during their tours and festivals. I was instantly taken by their music and natural talents. The original drummer, Andy Parle was exceptionally gifted. I ended up becoming friends with the band and hope to see them touring later this year. I went on to tour with The Coral and Maximo park. Both talented musicians.

This is such a perfectly written song. Nice riff on the vibes, catchy chorus without being annoying, and interesting lyrics. I can't imagine anybody disliking this song, yet these days there's so much shit being pumped out that only certain groups will like. I miss the days of where chart music was listenable for everyone and it was mostly pretty good.
It´s mix of cheesy melody, weird and also brilliant lyrics,... wow! the perfect combination that creates an imortal classic! What a song! Gotta love this.
Yeah, I mean the Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Hendrix, Cream were good an that, but not a patch on Space. Why do people think they're the centre of the universe and there experience is everything?
I don’t have many memories of being 4-5 years old, but this song definitely is one of them! This was one of the songs they liked to play in the background on CBBC.
Heard this on 88.5 The Sound at 3 in the morning driving home from Santa Monica on a lonley College Radio station, had completely forgot about this awesome tune.
@Debbie Brown: A lot of the indie bands were heavily influenced by the 1960's. The movie Austin Powers International Man of Mystery [ 1997] used it as well as the ITV drama series, Cold Feet [ 1999[ Pilot]- 2020 series is currently on a hiatus again ]. I miss both the 80's and the 90's.
I've been wondering this too! lol I think some of the accompanying instruments like the maribimba (I think?) sounds more 60s, yet the style of singing seems more 90s, and that's how it has this paradoxical feeling of having both :)
It's part of the 30-year gap. In the 80s, people were nostalgic over the 50s, with the revival of Noir films and Neo-Noir pastiches such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit and remakes of films from the 50s such as Scarface. In the 2010s, people were nostalgic over the 80s, with the rise of vapourwave and new wave music. As such, in the 90s, people were nostalgic over the 60s. Ergo the homage to 60s films and shows like James Bond in the form of Austin Powers and The Saint getting revived for the 90s, not to mention cartoons such as Dexter's Laboratory being heavily influenced by 60s cartoons in terms of design.
@Tom F: The ITV Series, Cold Feet used this for their end titles for I think the first 2 seasons. Its still classic indie from the 90's-in fact its 21 years old and still sounds great.
This song has drifted in & out of my head for the last 25yrs.. honestly one of the most clever ever written. I think its fair to call it a perfect song.
Just a timeless classic of which i never tire......superb. If there was ever a song that afer a few cans you can dance around the room on you own this is it.
Probably it is mentioned somewhere....but this is the theme song of the brilliant TV series Cold Feet, situated in Manchester.. Cold Feet is still my favourite drama series. A brilliant script and superb acting. I have rewatched it many times, so the beautiful song has a platinum place in my mind. A highly original song for a highly original series.

This song is almost pretty in it's execution. After repeated listens, you look past is niche/kitsch qualities and absorb how really amazing it is. I'll always remember this track because of its extraordinary chorus...even back then it was something special.
with age, i've realised how great of a tune this is. great instrumentation, and also lyrics. Space were one of a kind in their output in the late 90s and still continue that flex now, especially on the track 20 million miles from earth.
I love living in the age of streaming music services. One gets to hear gems like this for the first time, many years after it's original release. What a great track.
Saw them live in Liverpool in 97' - I'd just turned 11. My first ever gig - my mum took me... I'll never forget it. I was amazed seeing people stand up down below us all the way through as I didn't know that happened at gigs. We've been muscly blessed in this city.
To me, a great song takes you to another dimension instantly. This song does that with the trippy soundscapes and arrangement. I haven't heard another like it since
This song was in my dream last night and I was humming it all morning thinking I’d made it up until I remembered it was an actual song suppressed in my memory for years!
Lyrics of this quality haven’t been seen for a decade or two. And the melody is sublime. It’s a 10. If you did only have one song- it may as well be this. The 90’s it had it all and more. Sure the 60’s were the bedrock of modern music, but the 90’s brought forth multiple genres that weren’t even born yet.
"Frankenstein and Dracula have nothing on you..., Jekyll and Hyde, join the back of the queue!" I'd completely forgotten this brilliant lyric since I first heard this song 25 years ago. Blimey. Thanks for posting this!
The amount exposure this song got at the time back in 1996 was insane - very heavy radio airplay, frequent MTV / VH-1 rotation, they performed it on Top Of The Pops, it got a lot of love from ITV's The Chart Show too... It was featured in numerous TV shows and adverts (and possibly a film in that era too, although that I'm not 100% certain on)... And for its day it enjoyed an unusually long stay in the Top 40... This song was absolutely EVERYWHERE in summer 1996 - yet, to my astonishment, I've only just found out today that the song peaked at (a relatively low, given its massive exposure) #14 in the charts 😲 😮 ! I was certain it must have gone at least Top 5! The follow-up single, the re-released Neighbourhood, went three places higher at #11 later in the year, but didn't get half as much exposure as this song!
Lucky you. That was prolly only in the UK, cuz here in Los Angeles, I only heard it on the radio, max, like 4 times. I'd call in to request it, but they never honoured it. As a child, I couldn't by the album...
Still sounds fresh. Still a great beat. Love the uplifting feeling it gives. Everything is just a bit off kilter but that's part of its charm. Made my MP3 playlist on my recent trip to Bali after being reminded how much I like it by hearing it on some Tv show a few months ago (can't remember what it was).
The 90s were special to a lot of us. It was a wonderful era to grow up in. I miss it badly everyday. Everything is so bleak and horrible these days. 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢

Female of the Species by Space is a very unique song that I was exposed to during my teenage radio listening years, I realize even more tonight listening to it again that I have yet to hear another song similar to this one of a kind indie-ish alternative rock ode to women.
I read the words "the female of" then immediately remembered this tune. Like someone here said we in the 90s honestly were lucky because the music of ALL genres were top class films were classic viewing tv programmes were great the whole media is the polar opposite of today...

There was these few years in the mid 90s where music was inspired by 60s lounge and it was glorious

Perfect music to listen to in your local tiki bar.

Halo, I'll be visiting Europe Dec-Jan 2024. any chance Space has concert on above dates?
One of the best songs to come out of the 90s. I like to play this is LOUD as possible!
Had this song on continuous replay while painting my sister's house. Really made the hours fly. One of the best songs of the '90s. Thanks, Space.
Me too..well actually my own kitchen and it was the entire album. This band is really underrated
