The best thing about Penguin to me is that if you know about him from comics I can tell they didn’t just make up a new character and call him Penguin. All the core ideas of his character are still there. The Napoleon complex, the insecurity, using class to mask deep inner rage, the need to collect expensive things, using tricks over force. The fact that he’ll just kill you if you insult him even a little. It’s like how DK Joker doesn’t use laughing gas but they kept most of what’s important. I do want him to use an umbrella knife before it’s over because that’s fun and it’s a real weapon someone could have but it’s not a big deal. And they should at least talk about what they’re gonna do about Batman when the dust settles. Otherwise it’s just perfectly executed. People who never watch this stuff have told it’s their new favorite thing.
I like that you mentioned the world-building; that's one of the things I like about it. They do interesting stuff with the camera/cinematography. Even narratively, you do get the sense that the setting is strangely unique and not simply hyper- "realistic". On the contrary, there is a sort of campiness to the performances/setting that I find interesting and almost unrealistic, in a good way I think.
That’s one thing about the penguin character as he is disabled with a club foot into the criminal rankings with the Falcone family once his mother gets cut off 💀 he gets more into his penguin style crime the umbrella ☂️ and the top hat 🎩
I think the Penguin is very strong competition for HOTD in many Emmy categories this year. Especially Colin Ferell and Christina Milotti as Oz and Sofia. Mob shows aren't my genre (didn't like Sopranos or Better call Saul) but I was really drawn in from the very first scene.
Offering one negative for me is episode 4. You see Sofia at her very lowest point (powerwise) and by the end of the episode, she rises to the top again. Very abrupt and I felt it needed more time and development.
