Honestly didn’t expect Alberto to die that early. But that shock is what makes the scene so great and introduces what kind of character we are dealing with
I watched episode 1 right after watching The Batman movie. It flawlessly picks up right after the movie ends. Sophia is terrifying……. I am cheering for Oz.
I can't think of the last season premiere of a show that had my eyes glued to the screen from beginning to end, no hyperbole. First off excellent writing by Lauren LeFranc with vivid dialogue and intense scenes. Secondly, the acting is masterclass especially from Colin Farrell who completely disappears once again as Oz but in a much significant role and Cristan Miloti is a pure unapologetic scene stealer. Finally, the atmosphere is so connected to the Matt Reeves Batmanverse that you can watch the 2022 film and this series right after, it just flows perfectly. If I had 3 arms I'd give it 3 Thumbs Way Up, and can't wait for more.
I know that Batman won't be present in the series but it would be cool to see hints of his actions. More things like the newscasters in this episode mentioning Batman. Maybe show some guys being paranoid about being watched, or have one of penguins warehouses get raided by Batman off screen and they react to it. Basically just references to show that the Batman is still active even if he isn't on camera
Killing Alberto was smartly done because they got a guy who's recognizable enough that you think "okay he's in the show he probably has a good role" and then he's dead in the first 5 mins. I like that actor too, great Bugsy Siegel in Boardwalk Empire
When Vic was driving Oz’s car and Oz was talking about the air freshener that whole scene felt like Tony and Christopher in The Sopranos😭 just with a tiny bit more tension. I love it
Dude... the first episode was SO GOOD!! I wish I could just binge watch the whole series, man. To be back in this world again, but this time through the perspective of Oswald Cobb and what his day to day life might be like is so fascinating. This might go down as one of the best series ever if it keeps going in this direction. I wish I could see 3 more episodes, lol. I can't wait for these breakdowns each week as well, plus Matt Reeves has announced he finished the script for The Batman 2, so there's going to be some glorious days here on the channel!
When I finished the episode I said to my gf “I love being a Batman fan”. I love how they depicted Penguin and the “humanisation” of his character is so beautifully done. Gotham really feels broken and it’s so believable to think that in a city that broken it’d need a masked vigilante
9/10 it's a great show i love Colin Farrell performances, he nailed The Penguin. And also i love Victor and Penguin chemistry together. I can't wait for more episodes!
I really enjoy this version of Penguin, i think that making him more of a gangster and his own character rather than a bitter wealthy-man to mirror Bruce Wayne is the right way to go especially when this universe’s Batman is building himself up alongside Oz because then we don’t lose any parallels
I absolutely loved it. The writing is super crisp and polished and really gives such a propulsive feeling since everything is happening because of Oz's active choices, however impulsive. He's hugely sympathetic even though we knows he's a monster, and I love that the script gives us enough material to be conflicted. You can see how he really gave Vic a chance to plead his case, but if he hadn't said the right thing, Oz really would have killed him and thought it was too bad, but necessary. Oz is like an iceberg (no pun intended). There saw the very tip in the Batman, but there's so much more under the surface and I'm so excited to find out more. Sofia is also perfectly acted and she feels scary, like a true threat to Oz. Great protagonist/antagonist pairs are often mirrors of each other, and you can see that here too in how Sofia is also desperately fighting for respect and power. Such a great pilot episode. Can't wait for the season to unfold.
Penguin driving the purple Maserati is perfect also because all car guys know that’s known as a cheap Lexie car for guys that want to look rich because you can buy a used one for dirt cheap
Man this show is awesome it's nice that Batman villains get their own shows like this so people know who they are and that they're amazing and batman really has the best villain gallery ever, and so that people know the type of danger and the people Batman deals with everyday, and also i hope they Make a show with the riddler and the joker in the same batverse, and also hope one day WB gets their mind working and lets Batman be in TV shows and get one.
This first episode was absolutely incredible. I just can’t wait for the rest of the show and the rest of the universe. I genuinely don’t know how it could have been a better pilot. For the name change, I honestly like it for this adaptation of the character - Cobblepot just sounds a bit too fancy for his person in this universe. I also think the shock with Alberto was done in a smart way and I enjoyed it.
He will always be Oswald Cobblepot as far as I'm concerned, and I'll always be editing it in my mind to imagine he's way shorter, but aside from those tiny pet peeves, I couldn't have been any more blown away by the start of this incredible series! I'm so glad to be back in this grimy, seedy, gorgeously gothic Gotham. The writing is so good, and it honestly just had me realizing how starved we've been of genuinely good storytelling in mainstream cinema and television for so long. So glad we have Matt Reeves to show us there's still talent and artistry in Hollywood, and in the superhero genre no less!
Never really cared about Penguin's height personally and find it mostly irrelevant, but the name change is a bit odd. I mean its not in any way a big deal, but I also don't think most people ever viewed Cobblepot as an on the nose cartoon name in the same vein as Edward Nygma or Victor Fries. It was just a weird sounding name for a weird guy. Oh well
@@Joshcoshbagosh For me I feel his diminutive stature is a big part of his personality, it's a huge factor in why no one takes him seriously, and as a result he has a full-on Napoleon complex. I tried to dismiss it in The Batman, since I loved Colin Ferril's performance and figured it wasn't worth using forced perspective or other trickery, but the name change on top of that just makes me think all these little things that make him so unique and have been sources of ridicule his whole life were deliberately omitted as being unrealistic (more so than Batman's armor or magic contact lenses, apparently), resulting in him basically just being a normal guy with no real reason to have been bullied his whole life, which makes him a lot less interesting to me. But of course, like I said, Collin Ferrel's so great it's easy for me to ignore.
@@justthinkingoutloud2538 Sure it CAN be a part of that. But I think you can still ultimately get the point across with his other physical ailments or attributes tbh. There are plenty of reasons to be bullied. Physically, I mean this version is still not exactly attractive and even has a gimp foot. Besides, there are going to be flashback moments in this series, so we will be getting a better idea of what exactly this version of Penguin has been through as the show goes on it seems. So I would say wait and see. Still, there is definitely an element of him being disrespected by the other mob guys for one reason or another. We saw that with Carmine, and we saw that just now with Alberto. It seems there are clearly reasons people don't particularly like him or take him as seriously as other gangsters. So I say wait and see. Plus, it's not the first depiction of Penguin not being extremely short tbf.
Even though people dislike and make fun of the change to Penguin’s last name, that change could be a bit of foreshadowing in the making for all we know. Cobb is the same surname of the Court of Owls’ top enforcer Talon, whose actual name is William Cobb. And, at several points in this episode, Penguin was mentioned and shown to have two brothers….
I think Victor might be some variation of Zsasz. In the comics I believe Zsasz also loses his whole family and then loses his fortune gambling against the penguin at the iceberg lounge and also stages a lot of his kills in life like positions maybe Vic gets the idea from what he has to do for penguin
That could be an interesting twist. I guess we’ll get a better “indication” of whether that’ll be true or not when he inevitably has to kill someone; whatever reaction he has to that could be potential foreshadowing of Zsasz’s obsessive “after-kill” habit of mutilating himself And even though people dislike and make fun of the change to Penguin’s last name, that change could be a bit of foreshadowing in the making for all we know. Cobb is the same surname of the Court of Owls’ top enforcer Talon, whose actual name is William Cobb. And, at several points in this episode, Penguin was mentioned and shown to have two brothers….
Sofia's actress is amazing. In the comics, she's a giant woman (literally having Giganta in her name), and is physically a menace. In this series, this "regular sized" woman is absolutely terrifying. Her eyes say that we have only a faint idea of the violence she's capable of.
I knew as soon as Alberto make fun of Calabresi, he was dead. You can see the rage behind his eyes before Alberto even makes fun of him. Farrell is such a good actor
Penguin was my favorite character in the batman, and I'm so happy he has his own spin off show now, the first episode was FANTASTIC, I absolutely can't wait for more episodes
yesss!!! we finally got more batverse stories for you to breakdown! can’t wait for your review for the entire series - honestly shocked alberto died that early but i’m sure we’ll get more of him in flashbacks. colin and cristin were phenomenal!!
They probably let him go because now they think the Marones killed her brother so she doesn't have a reason to kill him. Although she is smart and she might put it together that the Penguin arranged everything....but it might be too late by the time she realises it .
Awesome video! This was such a great premiere with a lot of shocking moments. I'm excited to see how the Drops storyline will develop. Maybe other drugs will be put into the spotlight as well like fear toxin or venom. We've already seen venom once in The Batman in the third act. This show has a lot of potential!
I hope we see Oswald’s criminal empire evolve and expand from drops into the arms dealer he was in the comics/Arkham games. Maybe he’ll militarize his crime family as a response to the rise in “freaks” or rouges running around Gotham. This is bound to happen since the crime families are slated to wipe each other out.
This episode was intense and I'm glad the kept the make-up at high quality cause it really helps blend the movie to this series and back again. Sophia was scary with how unhinged she was. I remember how good Penguin was in the Gotham show and I'm seeing it again with how he plans and turns people against each other. I hope it builds out the world and we get more hints of potential characters that could show up like low level villains.
I really wasn't expecting Alberto to die in this episode. And as a reference to your other video after the 1st 10 minutes the story really gets going. I think Oswald really has an understanding of how Vic is, in a way that he sees himself in Victor. Like when it was said that Vic ambition and he was pleading to not be killed, no one really looked to Penguin at all for having a plan to go on and so in that moment I don't think Oz really wanted to kill him. I think he just wanted to get him riled up so that the planning could get started. The episode was so good that I literally watched the entire credits scene to see if there would be some snippet of a preview for the next episode.
Well, now all I've got to say is, I've got a new favorite show to watch!👍❤️ I was enthralled from beginning to end! Imaginative dialogue. Suspense. Excellent storytelling. Interesting characterizations. So far, so good! And I don't think it will begin to suck as more episodes drop. Don't regret checking it out. The Batman Universe just has SO MUCH to offer, so much potential!!!
The first 10 minutes was just the perfect hook for the series..in that 1st monolgue we get to see that oz is a very self conscious guy, he doesn't like to be/feel embarrassed, and when he shoots alberto theres that moment he starts laughing after doing it..u can tell oz was laughing from stopping himself from busting into tears..al fucking embarrassed him and when it closes in on his face u can see the tears welling up..then he realizes what he just did on impulse n snaps outta it lol...i can imagine all oz can hear is his mom berading him "u gonna let this piss ant talk to u like that!?! Like ur just a lil pussy boy!".. the whole mom angle is fascinating as well man..that whole creepy "they a little too close" vibe u get from their interaction.. also oz having sympathy and comraderire with this kid with a stuttering disability, enough for oz to introduce him to his crazy ass fucking mother after one day! Lol.. he can tell oz sees himself in thst kid..this show is gonna make audiences root for oz like a antihero in batman 2 if they're not carful..he comes off way too sympathetic even with his ruthless side.. especially cuz it starting to look like he is the way he is cuz of his mom..he ain't just some heartless psychopath like Sofia is being set up to be that's for sure. Obviously iv only seen the one episode that's releases, but they set up expectations so damn well that we already care about the character as a person (atleast I do). Colin acting says ALOT about oz and his background without showing or outright telling us.. we can infer that oz is the way his is because of his mother, his disability, and everything that disability (took) from him..oz gives off that vibe of that kid who waa bullied to the point where the only way he can stop it is through physical violence..no one is gonna mess with the cripple dude who murders ppl that offend him right?... there is just so much of oz's personality that makes u want to sympathize with him. which is half the goal when it comes to a brand new series. Ppl will continue to watch the show because of OZ! not because it's set In the batman universe, not because we are hoping batman will pop up, ppl need to want to watch the show for him!! NOT batman. They achieved that imo atleast for me personally.
I think this undoes the persona that penguin carried in the film. He was already falcones right hand and ran the iceberg loung. He literally had henchmen and dirty cops working for him but in this show he has to hire some kid that was trying to rip him off. He even takes that kid to his mother’s house after telling the kid that he would gut him and kill anyone he loves.
That is a good point. Maybe the show could clarify that after falcone's death, penguin lost a lot of standing. Maybe his men only followed him because Falcone made them, hence them leaving to the others after his death
I feel like it's more of he had power when Falcone was alive. Falcone liked him so he let him "run" the club and probably gave him more connections to the city i.e goons and cops. Now he knows he can't really trust anyone ( maybe the goons from the drops factory.....but again remember he's more of a "manager" than the owner) so it's better to establish new connections. Anyway that's my two cents 🙃🤷🏾♂️
Exactly that oz was falcones right had man not the Falcone family’s right hand man big difference. He doesn’t have the support for falcone anymore so that’s why you see him be more scrappy and resourceful in this tv show.
I watched The Batman before I watched episode one and that was definitely THE way to watch it. While I wasn't blown away by the first episode, I really did love it and how much it expanded Matt Reeves Bat-verse. Cristin Milioti was excellent, and, of course, so was Collin Farrell. The first ten minutes were the best and the dinner scene. The QR worked for me, tho, not much there. It's obvious, Oz is gonna pit the two families against each other and wipe each other out al, la, Clint Eastwood's Man With No Name in A Fistful of Dollars. Good start. Looking forward to more, but, more importantly, The Batman 2.
Dude this episode was SOO GOOOOD I know Matt Said you don't have to watch this to understand the batman 2 BUT you definitely should the world its just so much cool Gotham world building etc. I hope we get a little bertanelli girl seeing her parents killed or at least mentioned Here or there.
I didn't expect Alberto died early, maybe because i know him from The Long Halloween and Dark Victory but this Alberto had nothing to do with the comics. But Sofia is incredible. This episode feels like Matt Reeves directed it, Craig Zobel is really good.
I still cannot believe how good the prosthetics and makeup on Colin Farrell are. At first I thought people were joking that it was actually Colin Farrell.
This is the best DC TV content slightly above Sandman, Doom Patrol. If you include animation it’s 3rd. BTAS, Brave & Bold then Penguin. Colin wins an award for this and Rhenzy finally gets back to where he belongs in superhero content and is amazing. Perfect way to introduce a new character. Hope he makes it into the pages at DC
I've said it before, but the chronic foot problem that Oswald Cobb has is easily corrected by a competent surgeon. He was either born with that condition or had an accident at a very young age. The toes are simply broken and reset with pins and splints and then put into a plaster cast. His foot won't be like the other one, but it will look closer to normal, and he won't be in so much pain.
JAMES GANDOLFINI REINCARNATED. 1ST thing I did this morning, made my MASERATI S PLUM WITH GOLD 20'S in GRAN TORISMO 7. ALSO MADE MY VW WAGON BLUE WITH CHROME RIMS
I feel like we finally have a decent lil fight between DC and Marvel the battle of television!!! I mean DC /HBO They Really Got a monster right now on their hands with this show Lord such a great show!!. Penguin is crushing it🫡 Colin and the cast acting is out of this world. Everybody, had me really believing this is Gotham straight out of the comic books! More villains, please, with this much passion and drama!!🔥
Wild theory here... what if vic is really Robin undercover? We know Bruce only cares about the mission, so he's using vic like he used Selena in the club. Maybe the kid on the train in the movie was supposed to be Robin, but people gained him so much attention, WB booked him to boost titans views. This could be the reason for the Easter egg of boosting the rims like Jason Todd did to batman. Robin may have to earn his usefulness to a young and headstrong batman
I finally watched it last night and I'm gonna watch it again today leading up to Batman Day. I'm on the west coast so it dropped on Max at 6pm. But I watched it around 8pm. It was really good. The show is off to a great start 👍.
Overall I think the episode was good. I love the cold bloodedness of the characters, they actually feel like villains in a grounded Gotham. My only complaint is maybe how Victor was handled. I think they could've given him more characterization to make the ending more believable. Also loved how crazy Sofia was and how close she was to finding out the truth. The tension in all those scenes was amazing
And.......I was right. I really enjoy it! I want a Batman show still. That would be fantastic. However, this is fantastic so far. Gave me a great Sopranos vibe!
It was pretty good but wished we got to see more of Alberto, kind of thought he would be the one penguin shoots bc of him not being much in the promotion for the show but excited to see where this goes
More and more I am getting the feeling Part 2 is going to be about delving deeper into the corruption of Arkham specifically, following up on the thread about Martha, her family, and why she was there. Matt said he wants this whole series to dig deep into why Gotham is the way it is. The first movie was about the crooked cops and politicians. Makes sense the next story might be more about the mental health aspect of Gotham's citizens. What purpose does Arkham truly serve? Why are people not getting the treatment they need? Then maybe the Court of Owls for the third film where it all comes together and he uncovers this epic hidden history of the city and the families.
@@Joshcoshbagosh I agree. I’m surprised are missing that point and only thinking of the Court of Owls. Not that they can’t work or included with the Arkham connection but just Arkham related villains like Hugo Strange is enough to tie in the whole corruption
I have one issue regarding first episode. Isn't Oz tried to kill Falcon outside launge..seems like everyone is letting him away for this..sofia, Alberto and family..... Strange. Can anyone explain?? Or am I missing something
Falcone was the “rat” oz was mad about it but also it’s just cops surrounding them no actual big players in the mob besides low level guards and people. He didn’t shoot or anything, plus penguin show starts just a couple days after the events of Batman so maybe hasn’t been talked about yet and will show up later in the season.
Fav character so far is Sofia Falcone ngl love Oz and everyone else but she's hot, scary, crazy eats like she doesn't gaf AND she's written very well and complexed I can see why she's such a threat.
16:06 I agree with you 100%. Now that we see that Oz is able to be strategic and a few moves ahead. It may be some thing that comes back in a later episode that he uses as a key to a plan, but the audience will only find out after a reveal. That would be good writing and the writing has been great so far.
I know it’s probably not the same character or gonna happen but the daughter of the mob boss that tried to kill Penguin would make a GREAT Poison Ivy. She has the look, the attitude & I mean she did come back from Arkham Asylum which they could have used as a starting point as to why she’s gone crazy. Not to mention in the last scene she was in a garden 🪴 but I know DC’s gonna fumble that idea so it’s just high hopes at this point.
Honestly I’m glad this show came out when it did. After the acolyte I just didn’t have faith in Disney. I was excited for Agatha, and still am. After watching the first two episodes, it’s got me intrigued (granted that’s what happened with the acolyte, but then stopped watching it after episode 3), but didn’t leave me feeling like “holy shit”…..The Penguin did just that. After the credits I said “now that’s how you make a tv show”. I wish Agatha the best and hope the show is good and does well, but if not. Atleast we have The Penguin.
This episode was damn near perfect aside from that shitty car chase scene - But who cares, what a fcking episode. Collin Ferrell was both terrifying and delightfully hilarious. Cristin Milioti will finally get the recognition she deserves. And Rhenzy Feliz seems to be incredible so far. Lauren Lefranc really cooked with this one.

That could be an interesting twist. I guess we’ll get a better “indication” of whether that’ll be true or not when he inevitably has to kill someone; whatever reaction he has to that could be potential foreshadowing of Zsasz’s obsessive “after-kill” habit of mutilating himself
And even though people dislike and make fun of the change to Penguin’s last name, that change could be a bit of foreshadowing in the making for all we know.
Loved this first episode!! Can’t wait for the rest!!
it was indeed an awesome start!
This was awesome
They nailed it! Colin Farrell is outstanding … again! But Cristin Milioti’s Sofia is superb! Terrifying!
Like the production quality of hbo
Unlike Disney plus ❤
One thing I don’t understand is the end, how did Oswald escape from Sofia? It just cut to him and Vic having drinks!
They probably let him go because now they think the Marones killed her brother so she doesn't have a reason to kill him. Although she is smart and she might put it together that the Penguin arranged everything....but it might be too late by the time she realises it .
She let him go
Awesome video! This was such a great premiere with a lot of shocking moments. I'm excited to see how the Drops storyline will develop. Maybe other drugs will be put into the spotlight as well like fear toxin or venom. We've already seen venom once in The Batman in the third act. This show has a lot of potential!
The episode is so damn good... Thanks for the awesome breakdown! And, can't wait for your future coverage on this show!
Thank you for watching! :D
Felt so good…can’t wait for more!
So good. I loved the interaction with oz and Sal.
It was awesome! I’m so excited for the story
What a fricken start. Cant wait too see where this goes
Boba I’ll be back when I find myself a way to watch this show
Damn imagine the poor bro who has to strip joker down every single day
😂
Hooked! I'm already hitting refresh on my Max app to see if episode 2 pops up 😂
Not for another 10 days 💔
I can’t believe what I watched. This show is incredible and it’s only the first episode.
That was only the first ep 😮 my God. It was amazing
This show is Incredible.colin Farrell is brilliant in his penguin character, just absolutely kills it all the way
I love coming back home to the Boba every time something Batman related drops 😁
Victor's last name is eagle in Spanish. Fitting the running bird theme from the movie (flying rat, falcon, penguin, etc).
Ep 1 was Bat-Tastic
Great review and breakdown. First episode was great.
Best pilot I’ve seen in years
This is the best DC TV content slightly above Sandman, Doom Patrol.
Indeed getting Tony Soprano vibes
I feel like we finally have a decent lil fight between DC and Marvel the battle of television!!! I mean DC /HBO They Really Got a monster right now on their hands with this show Lord such a great show!!. Penguin is crushing it🫡 Colin and the cast acting is out of this world. Everybody, had me really believing this is Gotham straight out of the comic books! More villains, please, with this much passion and drama!!🔥
Great episode, getting a Sopranos vibe definitely a good thing
Hehehehe this is giving me the same vibes as watching Boba back in Gotham days
Wild theory here... what if vic is really Robin undercover? We know Bruce only cares about the mission, so he's using vic like he used Selena in the club. Maybe the kid on the train in the movie was supposed to be Robin, but people gained him so much attention, WB booked him to boost titans views. This could be the reason for the Easter egg of boosting the rims like Jason Todd did to batman. Robin may have to earn his usefulness to a young and headstrong batman
AMAZING!!!
I finally watched it last night and I'm gonna watch it again today leading up to Batman Day. I'm on the west coast so it dropped on Max at 6pm. But I watched it around 8pm. It was really good. The show is off to a great start 👍.
The episodes was so great
Amazing Episode
great 1st episode!!
I also think the reason why penguins last name was just cobb is due to oswald or oz not coming from a wealthy family unlike other iterations
So 🔥 and Gotham is back!
Every time I hear you say Sofia all I hear is “Saafir” the emcee from the Bay 😂
I just finish the episode so fucking great and I rewatch the batman just before my god I want more
He reminds me of tony soprano. I do love the show
It was pretty good but wished we got to see more of Alberto, kind of thought he would be the one penguin shoots bc of him not being much in the promotion for the show but excited to see where this goes
I think Arkham is the source of the new drug.
My theory is scarecrow and Sofia falcone are altering the drops formula
@@MadMax-de5uhthat would be awesome. Scarecrow being a chemist testing his fear toxin on people that way would be a way to ground his character more
@@MadMax-de5uhI’m very close with you. I’m thinking between Hugo Strange, Scarecrow, and Mad Hatter. More-so Strange and Scarecrow.
Given what The Penguin told Alberto Falcone about Rex Calabrese, I actually thinks Oz would be the best option to be the next Crime Boss Of Gotham.
This show is gonna be so damn good
This episode was insane
I have one issue regarding first episode. Isn't Oz tried to kill Falcon outside launge..seems like everyone is letting him away for this..sofia, Alberto and family..... Strange. Can anyone explain?? Or am I missing something
Falcone was the “rat” oz was mad about it but also it’s just cops surrounding them no actual big players in the mob besides low level guards and people. He didn’t shoot or anything, plus penguin show starts just a couple days after the events of Batman so maybe hasn’t been talked about yet and will show up later in the season.
@@Michael-eq1ruyup
Okay thanks @@Michael-eq1ru
It’s 2024 Tony Soprano the made his character likeness that’s why this show is likable
Fav character so far is Sofia Falcone ngl love Oz and everyone else but she's hot, scary, crazy eats like she doesn't gaf AND she's written very well and complexed I can see why she's such a threat.
I liked the Easter eggs eg: Burgess jewellery 😊
I hope dc do fumble that idea since Sophia falcone being poison ivy sounds like the worst twist ever.
It was brilliant 👏 👌
This episode was damn near perfect aside from that shitty car chase scene - But who cares, what a fcking episode. Collin Ferrell was both terrifying and delightfully hilarious. Cristin Milioti will finally get the recognition she deserves. And Rhenzy Feliz seems to be incredible so far. Lauren Lefranc really cooked with this one.
I wouldn’t be surprised they get sued for using Tony’s Soprano charter likeness
It was worth the wait
Kyle chandler as Hal Jordan
