      I've had my Latitude E6400 atg for about that long too. Just recently learned that the CMOS battery is dead on the laptop. So, if I take out the battery, all the cmos data is gone. I'm being loaned a Latitude E6540 for school. The only thing I hate about this laptop was the 65 WH battery. Which I quickly remedied with a 97 wh battery on ebay for $30.99

    This notebook has been suffering from heating issue from numerous people on the forums, a lot of throttling due to either poor cooling and/or poor airflow. On mine, if you put a general mode, it gets up to 70°c during basic task like internet and light application. The fan kicks early and is not consistent, therefore having a pulsing noise that's quite annoying. Playing light games will destroy the cpu, going near the 100°C mark, and then throttling to oblivion. People had tried to get a replacement from Dell, because they couldn't use heavy application during long period of time. Some tried to repaste the cpu to improve cooling and it works pretty well in addition to improving airflow by modify the undercover. There's also the idea to reduce the current on the cpu in the bios. Don't expect any bios update to improve the performance, i did and it didn't change a lot. The only way to keep the unit cool and quiet, is to put it in Quiet mode, where the cpu is limited and fan too.
    I have it for about 2 years, and don't recommand it. Avoid it if your intent is to really use the notebook heavily for work, or heavy task or games from times to times.
    Hopefully, the new generation from Dell is way better than this.

    • @BuffRANGE

      Could be why they discontinued it. I haven't had good look with the E6X40 series with the AMD cards.

    • @TerrificFlow
      @TerrificFlow 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think they really reduce cost, and didn't put a good enough cooling solution into this. The CPU alone gets hot, and it goes insane if the gpu is also under heavy load. Nowadays i believe there's at least two fan for each component in order to keep a gaming or profesionnal laptop.
      The general build quality is okay, although the power button is now broken after 2 year of use, and the screen is pretty mediocre, the blacks are grey, and there is a lot of screen bleeding at the bottom.
      It's my first experience with dell, what a bummer.

    Thinking of getting a 6530 to upgrade my 6430 since I already have upgraded components but I’m looking for a 1080p screen and a the built-in numpad would be nice. Idk if it’s worth going all the way to Haswell with the 6540 or sticking with Ivy Bridge (I have an i7-3470qm in my 6430 right now, and it’s slot into the 6530). Thoughts?

      Oh yes, sorry, I was really looking a bit too fast, and I saw E5550 selling but the seller wrote E6550, my bad, sorry. I was looking on dell site really fast and was looking for E5550 but got confused seeing "6550" for sale. Btw, 5000 series has now already E5570..

      Just for the archive- this was the last of the e6XXX series from Dell. If you want anything newer you have to move to either the e7XXX ultrabooks (with even less space for cooling) or the cheaper, lower quality e5XXX series. I guess there wasn't demand for heavy, old school desktop replacement business notebooks anymore.

      Min requirements seem to indicate the HD4600 could play it, and if you have the discrete card it should. Not sure how good it will be.

    Which is better this or the HP zbook 15?

    • @BuffRANGE
      @BuffRANGE  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +James Thacker the Z book is a mobile workstation. That would be comparable to the Precision mobile M series from Dell. The e6540 wouldn't handle much graphics design. What's your intended use?

      @thackythac 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Buffman For programming. I am a computer science major and I dont care about the graphics card. I notice on ebay these are cheaper than the HP. But the HP has a synaptics touchpad where as these have crappy ALPS ones which are horrible in Linux.

      James Thacker Yeah these still have the ALPS. I'm not much of a touch pad user (prefer mice), but if you definitely need a reliable touchpad, that would sway me towards the HP.
