@NightOwl Cinema - LONG POST - sorry. loved Klaus; my husband didn't; he preferred #5. But my daughter (21) also loved Klaus (and, like me, Ben - they seem attached beyond Ben's ghostly reliance on his brother). However for me it was personal. I had a stroke 13 years ago and it left me mildly brain damaged - I have no real filters anymore and I honestly don't give a fuck what people think of me. It's been the most liberating experience of my life and I'm the happiest I've been since I was a kid. I've had demons to deal with too and will always consider myself a recovering self harmer and my physical health is basically shot to pieces. But mentally, yup at 54 I've realised that I'm Klaus and it's not bad. I mean I try to be kind in what I say, but as I literally can't lie because my brain doesn't seem to compute the idea, I tend to just speak whatever's in my head - as Klaus does. I certainly often have the attention span of 'Dug' from 'Up'. So I suppose I get Klaus the best out of all them. Certainly being liberated from worrying what others think of you and trying to keep your thoughts locked down or silenced is truly amazing. To me, Klaus is the real no.1; his role in the academy in general and the Hargreeves family in particular may still be forming, but for me - as much as I like the others - he will always be my solid FIRST....with Ben just a tiny little way behind, because I honestly don't feel like I can love Klaus and not Ben too I agree with you that Dave was the catalyst to Klaus getting his shit together. but Klaus held it together HIMSELF. When his siblings were losing their shit - even Luther doing his best 'Hulk SMASH!' moments in his rage at how he'd been lied to - Klaus kept his sobriety intact and maintained moving forward. Indeed if the vengeful Luther had listened to Klaus and Alison and instead accepted and HELPED Vanya instead of choking her unconscious and locking her up in the pit of despair from her abusive childhood, then I would argue the apocalypse could've been avoided. As Klaus said to Luther in Ep9 "for all we know she might be struggling with this new power....I mean it must be scary....TERRIFYING really to discover you could do something you never thought you could do." (And yes, I did watch the episode again to get that right...LOL!) With his own newly discovered power Klaus understood a portion of what Vanya was suffering - obviously he didn't know about the sense of betrayal she was also dealing with, but then maybe he did because knowing your father is happy to lock you in a crypt with dead people who torment you will definitely feed a sense of betrayal I'm sure - but, either way, he tried to make Luther understand....sadly ApeHulk was not listening because he was on a revenge quest, even if the person he was 'avenging' didn't even want him to and made that painfully clear. I also think that without Klaus harnessing his newly developing power and being able to bring Ben through from wherever he is (I'm still not entirely convinced he's actually dead, dead) and enable him to use his octopus portal monster to kill the bad guys, then they would've lost the battle and all died (AGAIN). I think he WAS the hero already by the end of season 1....he and Ben together. I also think you're wrong in saying he doesn't care about anyone but himself, he clearly cares about Ben - even before getting clean - and he cried, albeit a single tear, when his father told him that he had indeed killed himself. Klaus is a lot softer and caring than people think. Perrsonally, I believe all the blame for the seven of them being completely self absorbed and thinking each of them were the 'unloved' child was all on Hargreeves Snr. The man was a scientist and the kids were his lab rats. I don't care about the scene with the violin and how Vanya got it, or his interaction with Klaus whilst dead.....they nothing but lab rats to him. My father tried 'flooding' with me when I was 3 with spiders - what hadbeen a passing 'eww their icky and a bit scary'' he caused to become a full blown phobia that, at 54, I'm still learning to deal with by killing them whenever I can rather than fleeing the room screaming like a banshee on helium. Hargreeves should've known that - but I think he did, and just didn't care. Why would he - they're just possessions he bought. So for me, having watched this series twice now - once alone and once with my family - I say the blame for Klaus's behaviour, and that of the others, rests solely on the old man's shoulders. He had NO brakes to his behaviour - the victims were babies raised to believe he was always right and those that helped him were a slave in the form of a talking chimp and a robot HE programmed.....not exactly going to be willing or able (respectively) to say no to the evil old goat. .
