This isn't called their most accessible album for no reason. I haven't listened to this in full in years but this reaction brought back memories of recording this album on cassette tape back in 1998. The nostalgia is insane!
Primo is from Prairie View, TX. Hip hop has deep roots in the South... a lot of the pioneers were migrants from the Carolinas. Disco King Mario, who is credited as being hip hop's original DJ, is from Edenton, NC.
A few years before guru passed away i spoke to him at a job booking hotel rooms. Very nice guy. He offered me backstage passes and tickets to the concert just for doing my job. I will always remember him from that conversation. I couldn't go and I let him know that because I was in a different state then the shoe but he was so kind. Rip G
@KingAhmadTv Interesting enough he asked me for an entertainer's discount. I was like they dont let me have discounts like that. Then we talk for a bit. He was just as sincere, dude, even just in that twenty minute conversation. He was like im 1/2 of gangstar..i was like yeahhh i know. Blessing in my life 🙏
This album has some of the most powerful songs ever created. Guru is not on many peoples top 5 but this album alone IMO makes him a top 10. No one ever talks about him like that which is shame. Tracks like “JFK 2 LAX” spits some of the most realest stuff ever, as well as the title track and “What I’m Here 4” - the best verse to bump on this album is Guru’s 2nd verse on “Make Em Pay” straight fire 🔥🔥
Premier tells the story of how Freddie Foxxx spit his verse on “the militia” with his 2 glocks out in the vocal booth. Definitely adds to the visual of those classic bars!!

This album make me miss GURP RIP King! I met GURU in the early 2000s with Psycho Les, they both cool as hell man, down to earth brothers, gave me a dap hug and everything. Good dudes right there. Its a shame there will be no more Gangstarr albums, Krumb snatcher is one of my other favorite MCs, underrated indeed.
Guru never really has been in any top-5 of anything conversation. But till this day he remains one of the realest MCs ever. Straight political, conscious, a message always involved, one of the most unique and recognizible voices ever. And one of the best discographies in the history of the whole genre. Plus he pioneered jazz-hip-hop subgenre which is very important for the roots of this culture.
@@EzeICEif you ask me Guru is my favourite MC of all time followed by Big L, Masta Ace, Nas, Black Thought, Kane, Rakim, Common, G Rap, Sean Price, O.C. and RA the Rugged Man.
I love guru as a member of Gangstarr. Gangstarr is their own style and thing. I dont compare him to Nas or Big or anything but he's so dope in a niche way.
@@SutekhDaSteemroller Guru got his own style plus he was never supposed to be a superstar because they always stayed on independent labels where they could work and make music their own way without any instructions from a label. As Preemo said, Gang Starr never had a platinum plaque but what they did have is the platinum respect across the culture. From the East all the way to Cali. From spending time with D.I.T.C. members, Pun, Biggie and Wu members to partying with Pac and Treach.
Thank you so much for doing a reaction to this. It's a special album to me; hip-hop in its purest form. It's encouraging seeing a young, intelligent man enjoy and appreciate the classics.
Thank you and we appreciate you for reacting to this. Always happy to see the next generation listening to these joints, keeping them alive and showing how f*cking dope ish was and could still be. My 2 cents.
Bro, amazing reaction to one of the dopest classics in the biz. Haven't been listening to the King Guru and Master Primo in a while. Thanks so much for give the whole album a listen. I'm hooked again on the power of Gang Starr. Wisdom, Strength, Focus, Smoothness, Realness.... This album got it all, in my opinion. Primo on the beats, this is a masterclass of production and Guru, like you said, the commander, a general on the mic. King of monotone. Was, is and will always be in my top 5. Nas, Pac, Guru, Masta Ace, Andre 3K and on it goes. Always a pleasure watching your reactions. Keep 'em coming, them classics that paved the way.
The Militia song, Freddie Foxx did the last verse, he was part of the DITC crew (Diggin' In The Crates) which was Diamond D, OC, Big L, Lord Finesse, Showbiz & AG, Fat Joe, and Buckwild officially, but related non-members were Pete Rock, Organized Konfusion, and others. Plus guru was going through possibly facing jail time and drinking way too much booze and they took about a 8-month hiatus about 3-4 songs into making the album cuz guru had to get sober and finish up his legal troubles. And they put together a masterpiece!
Freddie Foxx aka Bumpy Knuckels got a lot of dope joints. He's killed a lot of "posse cuts" too such as; The Flavor Unit MCs - "Roll With That Flava", "H.E.A.L.(Big Daddy Kane,Freddie Foxxx,MC Lyte,KRS-One,Queen L., Run DMC &More) - "Heal Yourself", Naughty By Nature - Hot Potato (feat. Thanks for the reaction. Didn't buy a whole lot of albums, but heard this and Capital Punishment on headphones at the preview station at the Record/CD store...and walked out with both of them.
This album is truly the “Cream of the Crop.” Great review, Ahmad. Before this release, Gang Starr hadn’t dropped an album since 1994’s “Hard to Earn.” During the four-year gap from 1994 to 1998, both Guru and DJ Premier pursued different projects. Premier continued to craft high-quality, top-notch beats at an elite level, while Guru worked on Jazzmatazz Vol. 2, an album blending hip hop and jazz. Given the four-year hiatus, it could have been challenging for the duo to regain their groove. Such breaks can sometimes strain the relationship between an artist and producer, but Premier and Guru proved they hadn’t lost their touch. It’s also worth noting that Guru was dealing with a legal issue involving a gun charge during this time. If convicted, he could have faced up to five years in prison. This led to a lot of back-and-forth between the studio and the courthouse, which is why the album cover features a courthouse background. You can sense Guru’s frustration in the track “Moment of Truth,” almost as if he’s declaring that no one can take him down. Despite the challenges, this album is a classic from start to finish. It was also Gang Starr’s first album to go gold.
I wanna highlight on the song “Royalty” the singers are K-Ci and Jojo from the group “Jodeci”. They are the most overlooked duo when featured on tracks by multiple reactors. From Pac’s “How do you want it” and others no respect on their name. Outside of that this was the album that made me a Gangstarr fan.
Nice reaction. Some dope albums to check out: KRS ONE Return of the Boom Bap Organized Konfusion - Stress The Extinction Agenda Roots - Illadelph Halflife

I love your reaction man, but to the idea that there arent concept albums nowadays, there are. However, they are usually less popular and a lot of radio music is isolated tracks and pop. According to RYM, this year alone there were 429 concept albums. Thank you for the reaction!
15:25 - with ALL RESPECT... ask ya momma who that is!!! Trust me, when she hears that "YEEAAA-AAEEAAAAHHHH..." she'll IMMEDIATELY let you know! That was K-Ci doing the wailing and JoJo on the main part of the hook. They've together they made a hit with 2Pac called "How Do U Want It" as well as other songs like "All My Life" and "Life" but they're also ½ of the legendary 90's R&B group Jodeci! 44:28 - That last verse was by Freddie Foxxx aka Bumpy Knuckles, he's a legend, too, got a song with 2Pac as well! 46:18 - That was Remy Ma fresh out!
Apparently both Deck and Guru walked into the booth not knowing what each other was rapping about in Above the clouds. If that’s true, best rap song made to date.

I wore this cd out! Man, so many memories listening to this! Glad I found your reaction! One Pride baby!
14:38 is KC & JoJo singing, from group Jodeci
Classic album I ran this album every day on the way to school. Premier’s best work
Your reactions are how I felt the first time too . I still get the chills of this album.
Rip Guru one of the greatest ❤above the clouds one of the greatest hip hop records made 👍 my 14 year old son loves true old school tunes
Moment of truth is a work of art. It's like a philosophy class. Timeless and special
I've been wrote down many times The Milita for you, i knew u would love that Freddie Foxxx verse!
👑
FYI Freddy Foxx was supposed to be Eric B's mc before he met Rakim
Yo, i was in a YMCA program called Youth in Government and as a Sophomore i met all these Senior babes who put me on game! Memorized this whole album!
They pulled off that Scarface collabo because they were label mates on a label called Nu Trybe. Smart song
samples from gold era of music, 60s to 80s
DID ONE WITH THE OWNERZ BRO!!!! BANG BANG FROM BEGINNING TO THE END!!! But this my fav one from Gang Starr!! Straight Classic
Classic joints on here!! Premo beats always slap!
15:26 Jo Jo from K-Ci and Jo Jo is on the hook. Also known from his group Jodeci

Nice reaction. Some dope albums to check out:
KRS ONE Return of the Boom Bap
Organized Konfusion - Stress The Extinction Agenda
Roots - Illadelph Halflife
Guru wasn’t about multi cylibs but he had a message
But he used a lot on this album though. Especially on Royalty, You know my steez and Moment of Truth.
one of the goat albums in hip hop. rip Guru and salute to DJ premier
Yo I just realized you almost have 70,000 followers!!! And you should young king.... You grind better than most of these reviewers. And your passion is unmatched!!!
Appreciate u king 💯💪🏾
Now you are getting into the bag, young king!!!! I'm a old head that respects your insight because they're genuine. Which is rare. Check out 1444 by gravediggaz! One of the most slept on songs in hip hop history
He's on my top 10
Always felt like guru was rapping for the new generation of rappers. He was rapping for the future
Seeing a little bit of my younger self in your reaction to this, I haven’t heard these songs in over a decade. Just made my day.
The 90s was the golden age for true LYRICISTS
That song playing in the background during that guru interview skit is called who's gonna take the weight? Off the 2nd album step in the arena & Yes that's G. Dep who just came home from Bad boy 👍🏿
This album changed my life! Premo and Guru were incredible.
Dude the gangstar projects are some of the most underrated songs ever recorded. Love this and the channel bro!
I love your reaction man, but to the idea that there arent concept albums nowadays, there are. However, they are usually less popular and a lot of radio music is isolated tracks and pop. According to RYM, this year alone there were 429 concept albums. Thank you for the reaction!
My favorite gangstarr album of all time.
We all know that yeeeeeaaah yeah yeahhh!
One of the greatest albums of all time!
Guru and Preemo the real hiphop duo, R.I.P GURU #1
BTW....Check out 'Krumbsnatcha - Closer to God'....Premo produced that joint too
I heard Moment of Truth on Dave Mirra BMX 2 when I was like 11. It's the whole reason I even started listening to hip hop.
Yo Ahmad, i had the same reaction the first time I heard Freddie Foxxx on The Militia, like who the fuck is this?!?!! Still get hyped to this day
Hell yeah been waiting for this
🔥💪🏾
Perfect hip hop record.
Automatically classic on my playlist s. Glad you got ot this one. 😮😊
Guess you're going to have to review DWYCK so that you can hear where that 'Sure Shot' sample comes from.
A REAL hip-hop fan right here 👆👆👆
Apparently both Deck and Guru walked into the booth not knowing what each other was rapping about in Above the clouds. If that’s true, best rap song made to date.
38:42 “yeah my nigga Fame up in Prospect, nah them my niggas nah love wouldn’t disrespect “ BIG “Warning”
