DJ Premier & The Badder Band: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Aug 21, 2017 | Abby O'Neill | Three-time Grammy winner DJ Premier, one of the definitive architects of New York hip-hop, brought a new type of life to NPR's Tiny Desk: our first concert helmed by a DJ.
A packed house of head-nodding journalists grooved through their lunch hour to a nine-song medley of iconic Premier productions while decompressing from the unrelenting grind of the news cycle. The set list rested on the undeniable footprint of Preemo's classics, but this was more than just another DJ mix. His touring outfit, The Badder Band, overlaid Premier's blends with an undulating electric bass courtesy of Brady Watt, a steady accent on the one from drummer Lenny "The Ox" Reece and boisterous horns from Mark Williams and Jonathan Powell.
But it was Premier who remained front-and-center, commanding the crowd like a true party rocker. With throwbacks ranging from Gangstarr's "Step into the Arena" to an amped rendition of Jeru The Damaja's "Da Bitches," embellished by The Badder's jazzy horns, Preemo concluded the set with a "Moment of Truth," featuring the exalted rhymes of his posthumous Gangstarr partner, Guru.
Tiny Desk concerts are short by design, so naturally the format could barely scratch the surface of Premier's vault of street anthems, done for the likes of the Notorious B.I.G., JAY-Z, Nas, Kanye West, Big L, M.O.P., Mos Def, Group Home, Jeru the Damaja, AZ, Snoop Dogg, and many more. Even after a career spanning almost three decades, the man born Christopher Martin has managed to stay authentic to his analog grit and sample-chopping integrity, as if he were still an underdog.

bruh my god could you imagine Gangstarr doing a tiny desk concert...
#GOAT
Every time Moment of truth comes up, I get something my eyes, can´t help it. When Preemo plays the beat in live on his drum computer, there is so much dedication in it...
RIP Gang Starr, you passed away far too soon.
R.I.P Guru
Preemo still repping Gangstarr
it is such a good song
When i was a teen Premier rocked my nights. Today i am 46 years old and i feel like a 70 year old. And Preemo is still rocking and with the same amounts of energy. Just look at this man enjoying doing his thing..Love you Preemo.
Seems like if you follow hip-hop down a rabbit hole of previous influences, DJ Premier is always there. Legend.
Amen…… hes the greatest
Premier stay eternal. Bet he had a hand in at least one track on most people's favorite rap albums
He's had a direct hand in so much work, not to mention an influence on everything that's been made since he became a big name. Absolutely one of the most important people in hip hop.
So true, The way like you said, straight from The rabbithole. Thats how i found this masterpiece.
Tiny Desk is one of the best things to come out of this century
Lawrence Worrell realest shit
big facts
I looked that up, and it's an actual fact.
Undisputed truth spittin
This is the next sound, live band with a DJ playing the turntables like an instrument. This has to take off. This has to be the future of hip hop.
It has only been the way but cats out here too lazy to put in work and master their craft
It's been like that forever 🤣
@@dramatyst5661 I was about to say bro 😂
Oh my sweet summer child.
haha maaaaaahhhhn, they've been doing it this way forever!
That royce da 5'9" boom was sick!
If you love both jazz and dj premier you feel like in heaven
They've always been a match made in heaven.
Hope they have premier on repeat in the lounge area
exactly
Was just about to comment to this effect. The full-circleness of hearing an ill jazz record then reconstructing the sample into a whole diff genre, then decades later having actual jazz musicians play to that sound...
who ? i clearly see mclemore
It's 2am and I gotta be up for work in 5 hours but you know I'm gonna watch this to the end.
oLi.P u rock :)
This was like the ultimate set! After 20:14 Premier is wiping away the odd tear for the rest of the set I noticed. Dude is so connected with his music; Moment Of Truth has gotta be one of my favourite tracks ever made. Goes without sayin' but: R.I.P Guru - That song always reminds me of ya
DJ Premier is hip hop in it's purest form. He acknowledges that hip hop borrows a lot from jazz and funk and blends it all together. Great job by the rest of the band as well.
I love how he puts out the same energy for this tiny room of people as he would for a full sold out show, that right there is loving what you do.
I was thinking the same thing. A lot of these tiny desk concerts the artist are timid and don’t know how to act in front such a small crowd and Preemo just goes all in. He’s very professional.
@@charlieott7469 He has that big bodied old school hip hop attitude of trying to be the biggest person in the room on the mic, being able to control the crowd (no matter how large or small) and get them snapping their fingers or singing along cause your contagious energy reaches them.
That's the only way. It doesn't matter about 5,0000, or 50 people he is just perfecting the craft.
Porque el sabe que es el dueño el balón
I swear Tiny Desk has the best sound engineers. Sounds LEGIT as always.
Word. Always a blast.
I want to learn from them, would love to know how they do it, consistently supreme sound quality
Legit baby :) the sounds. Are just unreal :)
No lie
For real!

Every time I come back to this tiny desk I go crazy. Hip hop is such a blessing. Takes me back to all the years where music had a meaning, you could gain knowledge and most importantly the music had a feeling!
This is why I cherish all of my vinyl records my dad passed on to me. Everyone from LL Cool J, Nas, to Sugarhill Gang, Newcleus and more!
That trumpet and trombone solos!! They killed it 🤘🏽
This is the first youtube video I ever clapped to at the end. Sober.

theres still great hiphop!!
This is how you get high without chemicals
Goosebumps everytime
Somebody just go ahead and make a bronze statue of Premo. For anyone who understands anything about Hip Hop history, we place DJ Premier amongst the legends who created a sound that defined the Golden Era. Dopest DJ/Producer of all time in my humble opinion. Salute! The band was nice!
Damn, TH-cam is such an awesome invention. I can watch this, and I can replay it as many times I want!
You can save this video and keep it forever!

This is a great set from a genius...
(Did anyone else spot the 7.42 beat drop during the transistion)
Whenever I make beats I always try to make them sound "right", and the more I listen to DJ Premier, the more I realize he's exactly what my ears consider "right" as far as hip-hop goes. Thank you Preem. Much love from Cali brother
This could've easily been a Premier discography set, I really wouldn't have minded. Felt like 5 minutes. Amazing. R.I.P Guru.

If there's a heaven, I feel like GURU must look down on Premier with the biggest smile. He still reps so hard for true hip hop. It's a beautiful thing. And man.... so fucking dope when he dropped Half & Half! On NPR! M.O.P. on fucking NPR! Loved every second of this.

Isaac Shouldice 💥the verse si killer dude... and so true
An absolute legend!!! This is what is missing in today’s hip hop. Today’s hip hop(the majority of them) do not have the artistic abilities that the golden era has.
Props to all the instrumentalists but I couldn't help but notice the flawlessness of the bassist!! One of my favorite Tiny Desks
He’s Brady watt! Check him out he’s amazing
this is by far the best NPR feature
Did you watch the Anderson Paak one? That was dope as well.

A send off to GURU and remembrance of his legacy aswell
I've already watched and jammed to this video like 10 times, Imma watch it 9999 mo' times.
Damn I've never seen Premo this energetic!
damn Guru had such a smooth flow, truly one of the greatest
RIP
He was a lyrical mastermind with a flow like no other man.
This just takes me back to my teenage years R.I.P GURU ❤❤❤❤
Again the dislikes are people who haven't got an ear for music.. You no. Listening but not hearing 🙄
Seeing him play with a band shows that Premo is also a musician. His instruments are turntables, a mixer, a MPC, and a great ear for music. Go Preem!!!
it's that rhythm!!
when krs one says ''I never won a grammy'' look how premier shows his 3 fingers at 2:45
He won 3 grammys for his production work for Christina Aguilera, Jay-Z and D'Angelo
That ending was incredible, sampling is really magic and I love that he emphasized moment of truth at the end, I agree those sample chops are beautiful and RIP to Guru! His message got to me years after his passing his fire is still burning and I really liked that he had a positive outlook on things like that "Discipline" joint does magic when I'm about to go running or doing something hard! as Guru said "Just because I want to it don't mean I will".
Premier on the track. Yea we can tell and it’s always dope.
Wow, when he played “Moment of Truth” I got chills. Was raised on this here. One of the first albums I ever bought. And my favorite song off that album. It was a glorious time in Hip Hop, golden age. Back then we were “knee deep in the beats” like Biggie said. RIP GURU.
I've been watching lots of musician interviews lately and so many of my biggest idols say *their* biggest idol is DJ Premier.
I clearly can tell why. Long live Premier! Thank you for making this happen, NPR.
Did you watch the dj premier interview on genius
Joseph M i haven't. Good look
it's a great interview
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve come back to this. It’s Greatness
19:06 is where the Beauty begins. One of the coldest samples I ever heard back in 98 in my Friend's minivan. The illest sample with the illest of lyrics. "Moment of Truth."
Not even sure if hip hop itself deserves Primo at this point tbh
1000%, hip-hop utter rubbish now.
That made me genuinely laugh out loud
