- We decided to visit the very beautiful Hallstatt Town from Vienna Austria via OBB train and a ferry. Find out how we did it by watching this travel vlog.

DETAILED TRAVEL GUIDE FROM VIENNA (Wien Rennwegg/Wien Meidling) TO HALLSTATT VIA OBB TRAIN and FERRY:
Total Roundtrip ticket cost: 112 Euro/pax
Total travel time: 3hrs 30min
1. WIEN RENNWEGG - WIEN MEIDLING
The nearest station in our hotel is Wien Rennwegg Station so we still need to go to Wien Meidling which is one of Vienna's main railway station - buy ticket going to WIEN MEIDLING before entering and going down the station. You don't need to validate the ticket anymore (2.40EURO/person). Only ride the S1/S2/S3 trains. Never ride the S7 train because it will go to the airport.
2. WIEN MEIDLING - ATTNANG PUCCHEIM
Go to OBB office, tell them that you want to go to Hallstatt. Ask for the timings of each stop so you will still have a guide, they will give you an itinerary for your whole travel duration until you get to Hallstatt.
Go down at Attnang Puchheim. Travel time from Meidling to Attnang Puccheim is 1hour and 56 minutes.
3. Attnang Puccheim to Hallstatt
When you get off at Attnang Puchcheim, go to the designated platform assigned (check the itinerary that OBB office gave you).
When we get there, the train is already waiting for us. Be mindful of the time since the transit time is very less. In our case we only have 10 mins of transit time in Attnang Puccheim. The train from Wien Meidling was also delayed for few minutes so walk as fast as you can LOL.
Also, Hallstatt Station is not the last station for this line so make sure to check the monitors inside the train and set an alarm if you must.
4. Hallstatt Station to Hallstatt town via Ferry
Once you get off at Hallstatt Station, you just need to walk a little bit to the ferry port (no worries there are signages in Deutsch and in English). You will pay 2.50euro/one way/person. Travel time is only 5mins. You need to pay while embarking inside the ferry.
*Going back to Vienna, just follow the same steps. You can buy the ticket from Hallstatt Station via ticketing machine. From Hallstatt Station to Wien Meidling.

Hey thanks this was super helpful! I am in Vienna for a few weeks so I was thinking to go. We have a car too, but I think it would be nice to just sit back and relax or read (or sleep 😉😂) on the ride. Google maps doesn’t put us at the ferry station by train so this is helpful. I wonder if the funicular is worth it.
The cable car going up is just an option going to the skywalk, because u can hike too... 💕 The saltmine is a must visit they said! however because of time constraint we did not do the tour. Thank you so much andy! U can also download sygic offline map, its very helpful

Hi mary, ive been to vienna also, its beautiful, typical europe but im sure you'll find something that will interest you, then you can go to salzburg (never been there but I heard a lot of things about it), they said its a must go also, last will be hallstatt since its the farthest (make sure you dont forget to go to the salt mine!)

Great video, however I was surprised to hear you say you saw everything in Halstatt when you did not visit the famous salt mines or even mention them... I am also not sure if touching the skulls is appropriate especially since video taping is not allowed...

Hi. For me it is easy since they gave me an itinerary with the platforms where to board the next train and timings. If you dont miss any of your connections, your travel will be smooth. However, i have friend and some trains were cancelled and it took her almost the whole day just to get to halstatt from vienna :(

Hello!! how much did the train trip to hallstatt cost ?
Patrícia Vitorino round trip train ticket costs 112euro/pax
haha funny... you bought a ticket to MÖDLING instead of MEIDLING (I know it is not easy!)... i guess cos of the suggestions in the menu.
Anyway... Mödling is a small town outside Vienna and it cost you maybe only 2€ more, so you were lucky :P
And from Rennweg Meidling is even on the way to Mödling (Rennweg -> Meidling -> Mödling), so it was just a little mistake with no major effects.
Anyway... inside Vienna nobody would ever mind because inside Vienna they don´t even come to check your ticket.
And it would be even possible to buy your ticket to Hallstatt on the same machine at Rennweg. You just have to enter Hallstatt. No need to buy the ticket at the counter in Meidling.
But the machine would not print you a nice ticket with all the stops...
And lots of people are ranting about these selfservice ticket machines because they are not so intuitive... especially when you are from abroad and don´t know shit.

Hello! About 120 euro including the boat ride when you buy the ticket on the day itself. If you want a cheaper train ticket, you can book it days, weeks or months earlier 😉
Check for the Sparschine (discounted) tickets. They're 19euros per head per way. You can add 3euros to reserve your seat. Book them 3mos in advance

3:53 Its "Attnang-Puchheim". Two towns that by growing were combined. "Puche" is an old word for "beech" and "Heim" is "home or place" -> "Place/Building made out of beech-wood".

13:55 Those are real skull of real dead people, the families are likely still living in the area; let me put my hands all over them, Im sure the families will appeciate!

Now the one thing that always pisses me off by these tourist hords going to Hallstatt is the waste of time and effort by their part - let me explain: 1st villages like these exist all over the place in Austria (especcially in the Lake District of Salzkammergut) so its nothing special (so why go there in the first place? There are 7 other villages like that along that lake alone) 2nd (and most important) Hallstatt is a salt mining town with about 7000y of history in salt mining. The mine is active and can be visited. Not going there is like not going to the Eiffel Town when visiting Paris.

It is not a very good idea to see Hallstatt from Vienna as it takes 8 hours round trip in transportation time. Spend a few nights in Salzburg and see it from there instead
