      George Lucas dialogue feels like added effects put in after everything else is already done, it's almost an afterthought, but you need it to wow the audiences,...so add it.
      M. Night dialogue is far more uncanny, like it wants to be really sophisticated just by the words uttered and stand out as everything else is so understated...and it falls flat.

    • @jacobtuttle4311

      Hands down. George Lucas is just scattered brained with his focus when it comes to writing and he tends to focus on the wrong things. M Night is just bonkers. Like George Lucas dialogue is bland at worst but M Night's dialogue is almost undescribable. There's talking like robots and there's talking like you've never interacted with people before

  • @goodmachines7743
    @goodmachines7743 2 ปีที่แล้ว +517

    I felt that Shyamalan had something here. After reading about it, and how it’s apparently based on the graphic novel ‘Sand Castle’, a book Shyamalan was reading as he was coping with the idea of losing loved ones to sickness and old age, I thought this was going to be deeply personal.
    I would guess the thing that holds it back from greatness, at least for me, is that it aims more to be like Inception instead of Groundhog Day. As in, instead of just letting the odd phenomenon be the emotional drive of the story, it aims to try and find answers and create twists. I mean, the mystery is just fine, but wouldn’t it have felt more impactful had the twist been more metaphorical instead of convoluted?
    Like, what if the ‘ageing’ wasn’t caused by anything? What if everything just went on like normal, but they just didn’t realise time was passing by? That the whole time, we were witnessing several trips to the same beach, and the characters realise how odd it feels that all the time sort of ‘slipped away’?
    A tragedy-horror film. Wouldn’t that have been something?

    • @flixchix95
      @flixchix95 2 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      I was thinking something similar, but kinda messed up in another way. Like, what if the further away you are from the beach, you age back to your normal age, but it takes more time (we don't really know what the deal with the beach). So in the end, the kids are almost back to their original ages but they still have no parents and are really traumatized. They mentally grew up too fast.

      @@flixchix95 Yeah, leave the beach a mystery. No one knows why it makes you old, it just does. But if you absolutely need a reason, make it a believable one. Like, it's an old Native American Burial Ground or something. Have the guy who owns it be the one who disturbed the spirits by building a resort on the island, and in order to break the curse you have to trap him on that beach so the spirits can have their revenge.
      Or have there be a shrine hidden in the rocks that's doing it, and only by performing a certain right and purifying it can you stop the aging thing. Have the movie be about them discovering that, then trying to find out what the purifying rights are and figuring out who is meant to perform them. Y'know, _something_ credible.
      Oh yeah, and also make it have actual believable dialogue, with shots that make sense and are in focus. That might help, too.

    What Could Have Been: Shyamalan had tremendous trouble deciding if he would stick to the graphic novel’s bleak, fatalistic ending or go with his usual style of adding a big shocking Twist Ending. He only made a final decision about a month before the film needed to be in the can. According to a post on Reddit, test screenings didn't even have the ending.

    I agree with Doug in that really the only way the son’s speech and mannerisms could’ve worked is if he had a “condition”…ie was neurodivergent: as a kid with Asperger’s, my speech was oddly formal compared to other children my age, like his is, and I would often fixate on certain things and repeat certain phrases or questions, like when the son repeatedly asks “What’s your name and occupation”? I don’t think that’s what Shaymalan was going for, though: all the dialogue he writes is weirdly formal, and it seems as though the boy only goes around asking people their names and jobs is for clunky exposition, like Doug said.

They're not a mental health issue on their own like PTSD or OCD or Depression. While having these can lead to poor mental health and co-existing disorders, the extra problems come from how society doesn't accommodate us. Neurodivergent means we're different, not something that is inherently wrong or needs a cure.

    • @cass6082
      @cass6082 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ehh……….from what little I know, it made sense in the original comic, in the comic nobody got off the beach, but the baby lived and grew up along with the rest of the cast. With the baby growing up and actually being the last surviving person on the beach after the two kids (as in the doctors daughter and the boy, now adults) died in each other’s arms. There was no pharmaceutical company or explanation in the comic, it was just an allegory for aging and life itself. The baby growing up rapidly alongside them was suppose to be a part of that.
      However it made very little sense in the context the movie gave, especially since they just decided to kill the baby anyway. So in the movie it was just weird, disturbing, and necessary. Like if you were going to cut the baby out then why go through it in the first place?

      The funnest thing is that this is an adaptation of a really good graphic novel, even when taking a prewritten twist he STILL can't do it right 🤣. The twist as explained in the graphic novel is that this pharmaceutical company finds people with diseases or conditions (like the woman with the seizures), invites them to the island, laces their food with whatever treatment they want to test and then bring them to the rapid aging area to study the side effects and effectiveness of the treatments at an accelerated rate, saving years and years of research and drug trials. This was entirely explained and Shame-alan left out the most important part of the twist, the medication laced food.

    Besides using a tonic clonic seizure the seizure first aid was actually pretty close to accurate. You honestly cannot do anything besides what Jared and the Doctor did in that case unless the woman has emergency medication or it lasts more than 5 minutes. So 5/10 on the epilepsy representation scale, points off for not using a myoclonic seizure ( as visible but less stigma with more awareness) but simulating what an appropriate reaction to a seizure is, stay calm get the person on their side, cushion the head and stay with the person having a seizure. Can people die to a seizure, yes SUDEP or sudden unexpected death in epilepsy happens to every 1 in 1000 cases of epilepsy.
    As someone with epilepsy all of Hollywood needs to stop using tonic clonic seizures all the time. By Hollywood I mean everyone from writers, and directors to studio execs.

    This is so funny bad that I actually forgot Shyamalan made this and I just thought it was another Director I’m just very glad to see him back.

    I went into this movie not knowing it was made by M Night Shamylan... 😂 I only realised he was the director after they kept making expositions, and I was like ''I SWEAR, its him.''

    21:13 I watched this scene in a theater and it honestly disturbed me for one night. I swear it looked more gruesome than this but i guess thats just what a big screen can do

      Early Shyamalan (Sixth Sense, Signs) would know how to set up scenes, foreshadow and telegraph things to the audience. By Lady in the Water era he just stopped caring if anybody understands what he's doing. When you try to own every aspect of your production it often creates uniquely disastrous results like these.

    His last apperence was a cameo in cool world as a gag joke, it's so nice to see him as a proper antagonist.

    Not gonna lie when the characters notice someone is watching them from a distance on the mountain I was desperately hoping the twist would be a meta joke where they reveal M. Night was recording them through a camera to make his movie

    Fun Fact: M Night Shyamalan gets high before he makes a movie.

    I remember watching this when it came out with friends, I am still the only person that I know who genuinely enjoyed the film. Not sure why exactly, but I enjoyed the movie and had little complaints. the main reason why I liked it so much may possibly be due in part to the fact that I saw it at an outdoor drive in theatre. The sound and visual of the movie in the drive in gave it a more grainy look and feel, at times I felt almost like watching a found footage movie, and felt a little creepy at times, this could have been unique just because of the video quality at the theatre and the fact that the sound was coming from a car radio, but all in all, I'm in the minority of people who liked the film, despite disliking most of Shyamalan's other works

      I saw parts of it (while ushering) and its not great, dialouge is rough but the plot is interesting. The concept of a beach that ages you n you cant escape is interesting. Wish they hinted at the big pharma plot sooner than all at the end. It feels like a rough draft of an idea.

      @@AngelWingsYT I wish they didn't do that reveal at all. The idea of the beach was creepy enough to carry the entire film. Having a twist at the end of his film feels almost like a meta joke at this point.
