Honestly if we took the character relationship and story ideas of the mini series of 'Neverland' and combine it with the visuals of 'Pan' we could've had a great Peter Pan prequel.
I was about to point out the, er, "Unreasonable similarities" to Sci-Fi's "Neverland", before getting a big taste of just HOW bat**** this studio-budgeted version was.
I might be wrong but wasn't that the one where Hook wasn't a pirate he was a fencing instructor /Fagin like character? And wasn't Neverland on another planet?
I'm really glad Doug referenced Once Upon a Time's Peter Pan in this. For as many mistakes as that show made in character/plot choices, their version of Peter Pan just leaned completely into him being a cocky mischievous villain, and it was honestly a great way to go with him.
Since Disney is giving their villains origin movies I’ve got an interesting one for Hook. In the books Peter would actually kill the Lost Boys when started to get too old. Wendy would ask him and say “they became pirates”. Hook starts out as a Lost Boy until he starts to see that there’s something wrong with Peter. After questioning is authority, Peter tries to kill him but escapes. He fully dawns on the pirate persona with other former lost boys to combat Peter. It reveals that Peter kills the Lost Boys so he can stay young. An offering to a magical crocodile, aka: Tick Tock the Croc. And Hook tries to extend a hand to Peter hoping the could be friends but Peter pull Vader and chops it off. Offering it to Croc.
"In the books Peter would actually kill the Lost Boys when they started to get too old." I mean, the last time I've read the Peter Pan book was probably like 2013, and I don't have many recollections of it, but I sure as hell don't remember THAT.
@@Marcelelias11 your version may not have been the original. Granted I’ve never read the Peter Pan books. Just looked up bits of information on it involving the author which are quite questionable. It’s been said that only Peter was ageless and he would “thin the herd” involving the Lost Boys. Who are children that Peter would straight up kidnap. He was never a protagonist. Disney made us all see rose colors when it comes to these fairy tales.
@@renji90998 Maybe, and yeah, the version I read was darker than the Disney version (and better - Peter saying that death would be an exciting adventure after being left tied to a rock in a cave with rapidly rising water really stuck with me for all these years), but I don't remember it being *that* dark.
I remember watching this with my family and during the Nirvana sequence my dad and I just slowly turned to look at eachother without saying a word, that’s the clearest thing I remember about this movie, that look on my dad’s face.
I remember me and my dad said HWHAT????! at the same time, and then he said "come on we gotta go kid, looks like ol' Bucktooth is at it again!" Then we left in his buick slapping asses as we went.

For me it was Dolittle. Went to it with my whole immediate family and my nieces wanted to see it. Didn't completely fall asleep but got some decent rest, the theater had really comfy seats.
The idea is OK, but the books hint at a far more disturbing and interesting idea: Peter throws out or even kills Lost Boys, whom he considers too old. How interesting would it be if Hook and the other pirates had actually been a best friend or brother at some point, but Peter forgot like he forgets everything or simply doesn't care, because he's a psycho.
@@JuMiKu that's a good idea i like. But one detail you have to remember. Peter dosen't forget thing's because he doesn't care. He forgets because it's the nature of the island. He's been there so long that now he forgets things like mad. Micheal and john barley remembered there parents by the time they came back
The way Chris Stuckmann described this movie as the cheap grape cool aid version of the original Disney movie which was a quality original grape Capri sun was a perfect analogy
FYI, grape Capri Sun is mostly water and sugar, grape and pear juice concentrates, citric acid and "natural flavor". Not exactly pure grape juice. You should've went with Welch's, at least that's closer to real juice.
@@gregorymelissinos337 I'd never even heard of Capri Sun until about a year ago, then it suddenly became the go-to reference for people online. So the point of the OP was that Pan is Kool Aid and the Disney version is Capri Sun? I guess that makes sense. I was always partial to Peter Pan and the Pirates.
I honestly enjoyed jackmans’s Blackbeard cause it’s almost like he’s a senile angry old man who’s trying to stay calm but at times just slips up. I honestly find hook’s character just dull though
I remember the SyFy miniseries “Neverland” casted actual Native Americans and treated them with much more respect and dignity than most Peter Pan media. It makes me curious why this movie with a much bigger budget couldn’t cast Native American actors to portray the tribe
I agree. I much prefer the Neverland miniseries as a prequel to Peter Pan than Pan (2015). Rhys Iffans was great as James Hook, showing a mentor-student friendship between him and Peter, and slowly revealing it to be based on a false premise.
@@bellatrixm98schannel99 Me too! The actor who played Peter in that show was also great, which is surprising where he started with Golden Compass and Nutcracker 3D, but he's gone on to bigger things like Red Band Society, Salvation, and Rocketman (2019).
“With moments of the extraordinary dropped in” Probably the best way to describe it. A lot of the changes they made just don’t work very well, Tiger Lily being a major example. However, I think the visuals are some of the best in any Peter Pan project. Even the mining scenes which look bland or dull are still suitably epic in scale considering it’s literally showing child slavery. I also liked Jackman’s performance of Blackbeard and I especially like they didn’t make him exactly like Hook (in comparison…Hook should’ve been more like Hook with at least an anger issue or a dark streak to imply villainous things in his future). Blackbeard comes off as completely unstable, a man who can switch between emotions at the drop of the hat for almost no apparent reason. And I think that’s what the performance is meant to convey. But beyond those two things they really screwed themselves with this film. As it is people aren’t really fans of Chosen One stories anymore, but it’s so strange that they decided a Peter Pan story needed one when the entire story is already right in front of them. They could’ve even looked at any of the other spin-offs and taken ideas. The review mentions how the Robin Williams film had the Lost Boys come from different time periods and then gave them different period outfits to subtly show that. Great idea, makes perfect sense for the narrative, add more ideas like that and less like Peter being some special fairy boy. I didn’t even mind the orphanage being in league with the pirates, they just never explained why lol.
When Pan came out I was ten years old. I don’t remember anything of my first viewing in the theatre other than internally screaming”THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN YOUR STORY!” after that line of Hook and Pan always being friends.
Now THIS should’ve been the Neverland we got in “Hook”. Lots of people (including Spielberg himself) felt its depiction was underwhelming. Had they had the capability back then, it probably would’ve turned out like this.
I have to agree. Combine the scale and overall look of Neverland from this (minus the ugly neverbirds) and mix in the script and characters from Hook, and my god that would have been an even more amazing movie.
Well, seems good they did not! Else it would have been a very confused and generic reboot that does not even know if it wanta to be a kid or a adolescent movie.
what's funny is that there are a couple of books about peter pan's origins that haven't been adapted yet. both are pretty good and would make for very good movies.
Kinda hard though to have an origin of something that was written as a stage play in 1904 then adapted into a book in 1911, oh and the author is dead.......Its kinda like having Ridley Scott write a prequel story for Alien when he had nothing to do with writing Alien....Hard to origin something when your not the original author and really don't know what the original author's intent was. You can guess but at best your writing a fan fic.
I feel like this could be a cool idea for series. Imagine a story were the stars are islands and space is an ocean. Fairies are the inhabitants of these islands that either kidnapped people and stranded them on islands or either told them how to make it to the sky ocean
Dude this movie confused the hell out of me as a kid I fact even though this one was big flashy and had tones of special effects I still as a 9 or 10 year old would have watched hook over this any day
The whole, "I have your eyes," line in this movie sounds less like, "We have this physical trait in common," and more like, "I have your eyes...on my nightstand." :P
The interesting part is that there is a prequel story of the Peter Pan story everyone knows and it's literally just the book by the same author of Peter and Wendy in Neverland, Peter Pan in Kensington Garden. it's a great read and I would definitely recommend it
While I never read the original book, my favorite portrayal of Pan is the one from Once Upon a Time. Its so dark and twisted and I wish more Disney live adaptations did more chancey stuff like it.
Sooo... I never gave once upon a chance after the first episode paled so much compared to the tenth kingdom, then I saw these comments out of morbid curiosity from Doug's comment... Mind changed.
Malcolm: "Captain Blackbeard, I found 'Norm of the North.' We can make a remake of this one." :::Rob grabs the DVD and tosses it in the pit::: Rob: "No! I don't care what the charts say."
Tamara: “Wait, what about *Picks up The Last Unicorn book* The Last Unicorn? Surely it deserves a live action remake” Malcolm: “Is that the unfinished draft, or the finished book?” Tamara: “…The..first one?” Malcolm: “Noo” Doug: “Doh!” Malcolm: “Don’t be next to me holding that” Doug: “Are you serious?” Tamara: “But it’s got some good ideas” Doug: “Yea but it’s incomplete. We gotta use work that’s completely whole” Malcolm: “Even if it sucks” Doug: “Especially if it sucks, now keep mining!”
I remember watching Doctor Sleep, the scene with Danny Torrance talking with Lloyd the Bartender, who now resembles Jack Torrance, and his speech about his true self, the one who resented his family for eating up all his time, and how he depended on alcohol as his way of coping with that, reminded me very much of Peter Pan from Once Upon A Time, when Pan tells the truth of how he felt about his son, Rumple. "I remember looking at you, the littlest babe. Helpless and all mine. Those big, big eyes, just full of tears... pulling at me. Pulling away my name, my money, my time. Pulling away any chance I had of making my life better for myself. This pink, naked, squirming little larva, who wanted to eat up all my dreams and never stop! ...Can't I be free of you??"
I miss him as Wolverine, though I can understand why he stepped away as you want to move on after a while And I enjoyed seeing him in the Broadway show “The Music Man”
10:44- in Hook- Peter: why did you kill Rufio? Hook: because you fed my hand to the crocodile and made me British- I was a cowboy once. Everyone is confused.
Cinematic excrement: You’ve known a boy half your age all your life, you thought they would buy that? Hook: I lied! I do that sometimes it’s called being a grown up
In FABLES, Peter Pan was originally supposed to be The Adversary, but he wasn’t in the public domain, so they had to pivot to Geppetto instead. And since OUAT did BEGIN as an adaptation of that, it makes sense they put it back in.
I went to see this in theatres at the behest of my then-girlfriend. Not knowing it was Hugh Jackman at first, I was thoroughly convinced it was Johnny Depp playing Blackbeard
At this point, I don't even care how far away it is from the source material because it is so batshit crazy and confusing, yet so unbelievably passionate, I actually can't help but enjoy it and appreciate it. I list this under: *guilty pleasure.*
I'm sure you already knew it but "The Lost Boys" started as a gritty reimagining of Peter Pan. It replaces neverland with Vampirism and alters a lot of the origional story elements like the lost boys and pirates being essnetially one and the same, but kept a lot of the core concepts despite being so different. I can't imagine it went too much more off-model than "Pan" and at least had better reasons for WHY they did.
The Legend of Zelda also was inspired by Peter Pan. I don't feel you could call that one a reimagining and I doubt we'll get a feature length movie anytime soon though..the "excuse me princess!" cartoon DID have more callbacks to the origional source material that inspired it though, such as the Sprite character being a lot more like Tinkerbell than the game fairies typically were. Most people choose to insist that one doesn't exist though so..lol Peter Pan has clearly had its influence on more modern, popular media.
Schumacher felt that the original script was too much like the Goonies which had come out two years prior to when Lost Boys was released. So instead he kept the vampire element but changed the setting around until we got what we have now.
There’s already a live action Peter Pan from Disney coming (I think) next year. It’s called Peter Pan & Wendy. It’ll be directed by David Lowery, who directed the Pete’s Dragon remake (among a few other films that I don’t remember).
@@EmilynWood Honestly, knowing the Live Action Disney remakes, it’s probably going to suck. The only live action Disney remake I honestly have ANY faith in is Pinocchio. And that’s because the remake will be directed by Robert Zemeckis and will star Tom Hanks, who both together, ALWAYS knock it out of the park with the films they make together.
@@ZemeckisTEN There's also the Guillermo del Toro version of Pinnochio coming out--I just saw a teaser trailer for it and am curious how it will turn out. The Pete's Dragon reboot was actually pretty good (though I didn't grow up with the original film), so if it's as good as that, having the same person behind it, I have hope for it. And I really liked the Disney Cinderella remake, though I know what you mean. Lots of the reboots haven't been good the last several years.
You know, a few years ago, the SyFy channel made a miniseries called Neverland. it was a pseudo sci-fi/fantasy prequel story for Peter Pan. and it's still a much better story than this
I saw the trailer for this movie in a theater. When it showed off the title, my mind immediately went to you screaming it the same way you screamed "HAM!" in your Ponyo review.
Honestly the one part of this movie that can even remotely classify it as a prequel is the opening monologue. "Many enemies begin as friends." They could be referring to Hook being Peter's ally at first. I honestly don't know if they even had that thought.
Dude I was just watching this film last week and said that Doug should do a review of it. As odd as this movie is, the soundtrack is an absolute banger in my opinion. Also, my theory was that they kidnapped Kurt Cobain as one of the children slaves, and he took the song home with him Stupid, but neat.
Also, I was constantly expecting Hook to betray Pan after Blackbeard's death and take control of the ship, but that never happened. Why are my ideas often more interesting than what the movies actually have?
This was probably the first movie that I was underwhelmed by. I went to see this in theaters in like fifth grade because at the time our class was reading Peter and the Star Catchers and we went as a class field trip. Even as a young kid who liked cars 2 I remember thinking “this didn’t explain a lot about his backstory at all”
Okay, I'll admit, so when I saw this in theaters I was in a state of shock when nirvana came on. But in the years since I've found myself jamming to the Pan cover and blasting it from my car on the highway. Epic stuff
To be honest he got around to it earlier than I expected. (With the David Lowery version on the horizon it was only a question of « when » rather than « if »
I just want people to know I had a friend in school who knew people that work for the movie industry. In late 2011 early 2012 she told me “ hey did you hear that Hollywood is running out of ideas and they are going to be making reboots”. I don’t believe her at first but now 10 years later she was right. It’s the fact that things like this are planned out so years ago Hollywood made an decision to rehash classics and make money off nostalgia and it really makes me feel a certain way 🙄
This Pan movie was so bad, that it makes Hook look like Disney’s masterpiece Peter Pan, even though Hook was originally supposed to be a Disney movie when Spielberg rejected Disney’s demand.
Jackman gave a good performance and his singing was fine, but I just saw him as miscast. He just didn’t fit the role IMO Granted, not nearly as miscast as Rooney Mara playing a whitewashed Tiger Lily Mara herself has since said she regretted taking the role
I'm glad that you're feeling much better to do a review like this Doug and thank you for reviewing the prequel to Peter Pan as well I haven't seen it definitely not a great one as I remember
When I saw the trailer to this as a kid, I thought part of the finale would include Peter somehow betraying Hook’s trust, resulting in him losing his hand. I was expecting for it to be some sort of somber farewell between allies, but no it’s just dumb
I'm guessing the reason why Hook isn't evil yet It's because they were setting it up for a sequel or trilogy where he would gradually become the pirate Captain Hook and Peter's Arch nemesis But because of poor Box office sales and negative reviews from audiences and critics it'll never happen
There's a theory that he'd never turn evil. It's just that Blackbeard would come back, kill him, steal his name all for the purpose of tormenting Peter.
I think a few good ideas for the movie would've been to, obviously, have hook actually be British, and maybe to have had him be the captain of a ship on earth, and he was commanding a fleet of ships during a war. But then the ships are destroyed, and hook is the only one that survives, and the pirates just so happened to have flown by the aftermath and saw hook floating on some wood in the water. They pick him up and take them back with him, it gives him a somewhat interesting bakcstory, and a possibly better character than whatever Tremos knockoff character he was depicted as in the movie. I also think it would've been a good idea if the prophecy was revealed to be a lie, and the whole thing was a long elaborate trick to get Pan to lead Blackbeard to the fairyland. And when it's revealed to Peter that it was all a lie, but he learns that it doesn't matter that it was a lie, because he believed that he could save all of Neverland, and it was belief that got him this far, which is when he believes in himself enough to start flying. Maybe some of that sounds dumb, I'm just trying to help make a dumpster fire a little bit more of a tire fire, it's still not great, but atleast a burning tire smells slightly better than burning garbage
We went on a field trip from school when took a stop at the movie theater for the evening. Everybody wanted to see The Hunger Games. Everybody. But our teachers said "Nah, let's go into Pan" I guess we were the only 30 people to see this in Theaters
Eh The hunger games were a shitty series anyway Terrible nonsensical world building, trite excuses for social commentary, pointless love triangles, and the fact that it’s release ruined the genre of dystopian novels by encouraging a bunch of sad 30 something women to release the heir own crappy young adult dystopias with as much variation between them as hallmark movies, and as much intellect and insight as a fifth grader’s essay on an actually decent dystopian novel
Tiger Lily 1953: Young girl around Wendy's age. She gets abducted by Captain Hook and is threatened with death if she doesn't tell him where Pan is hiding. Tiger Lily 2015: Young woman in her 20s. Has a romantic interest in Hook. . . . I was SO confused the first time I saw this movie 😂 Like, how tf is this supposed to be a prequel to Peter Pan!? Is time and multi-versal travel possible in Neverland? That's the only way it could be possible for Tiger Lily to be an adult in the present and a child in the future
Fun fact about the pirates singing: the film crew/director wanted them singing but nothing they could come up with really captured what they wanted. As a joke they had them singing Nirvana, thought it made no sense and was funny and decided "let's make that the official cut"
I been a Nostalgic Critic fan for several years and I always loved the Nostalgic Critic theme/opening because not only does that gets me so hyped/excited for what Nostalgic Critic/Doug is going to review, but it’s also very catchy and sums up the whole Nostalgic Critic show perfectly.
8:15: This movie makes literally no sense. The story takes place during World War 2 in the 1940s. How are they singing a song that won’t be written for another 50 years?! How are they singing a song written by people who haven’t even been born yet?!!!
You want a good prequel to Peter Pan? Check out the SyFy miniseries Neverland. There we see how Hook and Peter went from allies to foes. How the Lost Boys were established and how the various groups of individuals such as the Pirates and Indians ended up in Neverland. Furthermore they got Bob Hoskins to play Smee again

Hook could easily be portrayed as a more sympathetic character without changing him at all. Imagine being a privateer captain and getting lost. You find yourself in a strange land, where a native tribe and a bunch of lost CHILDREN kill your scouting parties any time you send them out. Honestly kidnapping the chief's daughter is one of the least violent ways to solve that problem historically.
Glad you finally did this one. This movie seems terrible but the production design seems top notch. If I ever get to do a remake of Aladdin I’ll make sure to have them sing genie in a bottle
You do get that this movie is meant to be a prequel to the 1911 book right? Its not meant to have anything to do with the Disney movie, which itself took alot of liberties and changed things. Like the 2nd star to the right and straight on til morning is not a line from the original book. While this isn't a very good movie, people really need to get the notion out of their head that Peter Pan didn't exist until Disney stole it and Disneyized it.
OK I'm more forgivingof the random Nirvana moment in this specifically because in a different Peter Pan prequel story (Peter and the Starcatcher, it's a play and it's INCREDIBLY good), Black Stache (who eventually becomes Hook) makes a random Vine reference. No I am not joking. And yes it is actually funny in the scene
Looks like a movie for the High School Musical crowd. I think the 70s were the last time musicals didn't suck. Now they're just cheesy fluff that make Elvis musicals look like Oscar winners.
I think I’ll check this out. It looks cool and there’s some unique designs. I’m sure the character changes will annoy me but it seems worth watching once.
The only thing I remember about this film is that Garrett Hedlund is in it, and I like him purely because he was really good in Tron: Legacy. And there's a Ramones cover in it, this can't be too bad, as long as you ignore the plot and the characters.
Random fact: Rooney Mara regretted playing the Native American character Tiger Lily. It is possible for the tribe to be played positively, though could’ve been better if they didn’t whitewash the tribe
can you guys review Netflix’s new stop-motion film ‘The House’ for the next Freakshow Cinema?? that film’s so insane, oddly psychological at times, and has some genuinely effective scares in it, and it deserves way more recognition and people talking about it.

Even with our drastically different opinions on this movie, can we all agree that the John Powell music (including the renditions of Smells Like Teen Spirit and Blitzkrieg Bop) is the best part?
Doug: Okay, Malcolm, so you're standing here on the green screen and you're digging while saying your line. Malcolm: I'm what? Doug: You're digging. You know what digging is, right? Malcolm: Y-yes, of course! Malcolm: 27:28
I agree. Peter was WAY TOO DAMN nice in this movie. It really pissed me off. Peter Pan is suppose to have that "I don't give a fuck" attitude! While being childish, a show off and mocking his enemies! There's nothing wrong making your protagonist a goody too shoes. But Peter Pan is NOT one of them!
Exactly! Peter is a brat, who had no guidance growing up and could do whatever he wanted. He is the personified child within people or even the It. He's very, very amoral and should not have a basis for normal human behaviour. Having him live for so long in the human world really destroys his character. Thankfully, Neverland makes you forget everything, so all involved characters will forget everything that happened in this dreadful movie.

The only reason I don’t consider him the worst rendition of Hook is because Christopher walken took care of that ^^
In a lot of ways, Jackman’s Blackbeard is _more_ like Captain Hook than the _real Captain Hook._
"So that's it, we some kinda... lost boys?"
Oh I've been slain. This was an especially hilarious review!
I'm gonna say sadly Hollywood and being lazy
This mini series is amazing! I used to watch it on repeat! Wish it came a real show!
@@bellatrixm98schannel99 Me too! The actor who played Peter in that show was also great, which is surprising where he started with Golden Compass and Nutcracker 3D, but he's gone on to bigger things like Red Band Society, Salvation, and Rocketman (2019).
that movie sucked 21:50
“With moments of the extraordinary dropped in”
Probably the best way to describe it.

Is it weird that this version is closer to the original peter pan who murdered the lost boys when they aged out of their teens

The one starring Kiefer Sutherland, and filmed on location in Santa Cruz, CA?
@@louisduarte8763 Yep.
The “It’s always sunny in Philadelphia” joke caught me off guard so much, it made me burst out with laughter, great episode as always guys!

There’s already a live action Peter Pan from Disney coming (I think) next year. It’s called Peter Pan & Wendy. It’ll be directed by David Lowery, who directed the Pete’s Dragon remake (among a few other films that I don’t remember).
@@ZemeckisTEN I'm praying hard that it will be good. The original book was called Peter Pan and Wendy before it was shortened to Peter Pan.
@@EmilynWood Honestly, knowing the Live Action Disney remakes, it’s probably going to suck. The only live action Disney remake I honestly have ANY faith in is Pinocchio.
The only good thing that I can say about this film is, that it has a great original song to go with it. "Little Soldier" by Lily Allen.
This was probably the first movie that I was underwhelmed by. When I saw the trailer to this as a kid, I thought part of the finale would include Peter somehow betraying Hook’s trust, resulting in him losing his hand. I was expecting for it to be some sort of somber farewell between allies, but no it’s just dumb
I'm guessing the reason why Hook isn't evil yet It's because they were setting it up for a sequel or trilogy where he would gradually become the pirate Captain Hook and Peter's Arch nemesis
But because of poor Box office sales and negative reviews from audiences and critics it'll never happen
Yeah it would have been a better ending to turn Hook evil at the end.
There's a theory that he'd never turn evil. It's just that Blackbeard would come back, kill him, steal his name all for the purpose of tormenting Peter.
@@ShadowSonic2 Either way it's never gonna happen

Hook could easily be portrayed as a more sympathetic character without changing him at all. Imagine being a privateer captain and getting lost. Honestly kidnapping the chief's daughter is one of the least violent ways to solve that problem historically.
