  • Welcome to the DBG youtube. I put together this 10 min video to show a breif start to finish on the 1968 Dodge Coronet Magnum swap. If you havent seen the full build videos check out the channel! Thanks for watching everyone! If your new here this is a 1968 Dodge Coronet we swapped a 1993 5.2 Magnum and 46rh overdrive trans into, along with a 410spool rear, new fuel system and much more.

That Coronet has been sitting in a field for 50 years and it has less rust than that 10-year-old Dodge truck you were driving.

There’s nothing rusting more on earth than 2003-2008 dodge rams lol

@@doublebarrelgarage When did the more "modern" body style appear on the Dodges? 1994? Whenever it was, from that year to 2008 are some of the most rust-prone vehicles on planet Earth. I hear a lot of people make the claim that "Chevy trucks rust like crazy", but I live in the heart of the rust belt (Ohio), and I can say with 100% honesty that I have NEVER ONCE seen a Dodge truck from the 1994-2008 model years that did not have the top of all four wheel wells TOTALLY rusted out after AT MOST four years on the road. Same thing usually goes for the bottom of the doors.
I remember going to look at a Dodge from that 1990's era in 2006 or 2007 thinking I was about to buy my first truck. Got there and couldn't believe how rusted-out the thing was...I could not believe that this dude had somehow managed to hide that much rust in his pictures. All four wheel wells totally rusted out, and he had even put like a chrome panel over the bottom part of the doors because all four doors (it was an extended cab) were totally rusted out at the bottom too. It was a massive letdown. It seems like it is literally impossible to stop those things from rusting.
I drive a 2014 Sierra 2500 now and I get it oil sprayed every single winter. Once immediately before the first snow hits (and therefore immediately before the first road salt is put down), and then I get it sprayed usually once or twice more over the course of the winter whenever we have a few days or a week of sunny weather. Truck looks brand new underneath even though it has been driven throughout every Ohio winter for the last seven years. Actually I just stopped by the dealer to get a new battery two weeks ago and the dealer offered me top dollar for the truck because of all these shortages going on...and because it is in such pristine condition and has just about 63,000 miles on it. I would've sold it to them but I legitimately would not have been able to buy a new one to replace it! Plus I am waiting for the refreshed 2023 models before I buy a new Sierra HD.
But THE ONLY WAY to TOTALLY PREVENT your vehicle from rusting if you drive it on salty winter roads is to find a shop that does a THOROUGH oil spray job and get it done religiously every winter. Whatever you do...DO NOT GET YOUR VEHICLE "RUST-PROOFED" BECAUSE IT WILL DESTROY YOUR VEHICLE AFTER JUST ONE WINTER!!! My dad bought a 2003 Z71 Suburban brand new and made the catastrophic mistake of getting it "rust-proofed". I am not exaggerating when I say the underside of that truck looks like it has been sitting on the bottom of the ocean for the last 125 years...and the truck only has just under 110,000 miles on it. It rusted so severely due to the "rust-proofing" that it is literally unsafe to drive.
Actually the last time he drove it was back from the shop that had replaced all the brake lines because they ALL rusted out. These rednecks replaced ALL BUT ONE of the lines, and on the way home, that ONE LINE they didn't replace exploded. My dad drove it all the way home without brakes with me leading the way because he refused to return it to that shop. We got home safe, he parked that Suburban in his yard and it has been sitting there ever since...maybe nine years now. He went out and bought a new Sierra HD himself because he really needed a 2500 anyway.

@@doublebarrelgarage My old boss had a 99 and it was falling apart from the rust. Such a nice truck too when he first got it. V10 sport 2500 4×4. Granted he didn't take care of it except fix what broke mechanically. But man, he had to bungee the doors shut it was so bad.

5.2 liters is roughly a 318 ci. This brings back memories of my dad's '68 Dodge Coronet with a factory 318 w/ 2 barrel carb back in about 1975. That car had the same rust as yours. I have often wondered what became of my dads car. I hope someone restored it and that it is still somewhere in NC being loved and driven. Thank you!

That's what it's all about ; putting Classics back on the road and keeping history alive ! It takes knowledge and talent to do this kind of work and this guy has it ! Wish i could be an accomplished mechanic like him to be able to completely restore my own Classic car while the passion is still strong in me ! Nowadays if you don't do a little bit of work on your car and don't have good contacts that could help you restore your Classic, the road ahead is going to be very expensive.
