Being a fan of this band for over 20 years has been a wild ride. Going from the grinding politico street punk from “How to Clean Everything” to where they are now as this incredibly technical thrash fusion was something to behold. And something to get used to. Supporting caste was such a departure. As fans we didn’t know what to do with it, but each album just sinks in and they get better and better.
Oh yeah. Less Talk, More Rock was leaps and bounds above How to Clean Everything, and Todays Empires, Tomorrow’s Ashes was miles above THAT! But yeah, Supporting Caste was(forgive the tired example LOL)LIGHT YEARS above all the rest. THAT record was different. Like TE/TA was but so much improved overall. UNTOUCHABLE. And that’s where a great records hight is measured against. No matter the genre. That’s a perfect record.
HTCE was one of the albums that shaped my formative high school years, and Ska Sucks was one of my first priorities to teach myself when I first picked up a Bass.
How to clean everything changed my life. It was a random buy in my teen years. I had heard so much about this band but never really gave um a listen. Then when I popped that CD in I probably listened to it on repeat 100 times in a row and have bought every Prop CD since and seen them live 5 or 6 times
great commentary, Todd's presence is huge on Failed States, which is really a thrash record. songs like Rattan Cane are carried by his bass and voice. love it
There is also a really great podcast that has been breaking down Propagandhi song by song. It happens to be called Unscripted Moments. The band members have all been on and they are all just incredibly cool, thoughtful and generous people. I love them so much.
My old band Millhouse got to open for them here in San Antonio Texas for their Less Talk More Rock tour in the mid 90's, the original bassist John Sampson was still in the band .
Mark has made me appreciate the last few Propagandhi albums more than I initially did, but the first two will always be my favourites. I hope he'll review Samson-era stuff eventually.
I saw them in Denton on that tour! I don't remember the name of the venue. It got so hot that they took a 10 minute break for people to go outside and cool off. Chris decided to play the rest of the set naked, lol!
John K. Samson has gone onto front the weakerthans. Would be hilarious for a bass reaction to them if we all agree to not tell him what weakerthans sounds like, only letting him know it's a former member of propagandhi.
I've got a suggestion... what if for the next full Propagandhi album listen through you bring one of your prog or metal musician friends along. Someone who hasn't heard them and maybe isn't into punk? Maybe a guitarist or someone who will look at it from a different angle. Could be fun to get their reaction.
I like the way you break down the song and describe what makes each component great, not just the bass. I've listened to the song hundreds of times and never thought about the synced vocal hits, or the guitars hitting the vocal melody as a reason that makes this track so good. I think when I listen to Propagandhi I play a whole album and some of the elements that make a song great get lost because each song is so deep. Or I end up singing along to Chris and Todd... Either way it's fascinating that you're able open my eyes to a new way of appreciating a song I've listened to hundreds of times.
Todd plays the bass on the protest the hero song "the Canary" its amazing pick and finger style mix performance. If and when you get a chance check it out. The palimpsest album is incredible.
Love that you love Propagandhi. It’s been my favorite thing to witness on your punk journey. When you get to Today’s Empires, Tomorrow’s Ashes, make sure you listen to the Remastered version. Fixed some really weird guitar and drum tones that the original release (which I still love) had. The remaster made it sound much more like Chris wanted it to and it’s now closer to their current sound, rather than being a tonal outlier.
GREAT VIDEO / ANALYSIS OF THIS ONE. I LOVE THIS RECORD, ITS SUCH A GOOD ONE IN THEIR DISCOGRAPHY. A PERSONAL FAVORITE FROM THIS ALBUM IS THE TRACK “RATTAN CANE” LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING WHAT YOU COVER NEXT!
I Really enjoyed this reaction. Over the past 20 years I have seen propaghandi live at least 5 times. Their live show is just incredible. Keep up the great work!!
The best band to ever do it! This is one of my favourite songs by them, and it's so fun to watch you discover the next part and the next part because it's just sooooo good. Todd rules! I really hope you have the chance to see them live someday, because they are incredible.
I hadn't really listened to much from this album, but, inspired by your video, I've now listened through end-to-end multiple times. The back end of the album in particular is right up there with their very best. Lotus Gait will blow your bloody socks off!
This video brought me so much joy. Getting to watch you hear this for the first time and catch all the little candy bits brought me back to hearing it for the first time myself.
Haven't subscribed to the Patreon yet but I'm probably going to just to see all the Propagandhi & Streetlight Manifesto content, and looking forward to the whole Failed States album eventually probably? Especially looking forward to the Lotus Gait portion. FYI though, you've mentioned the "going backwards" approach when going through their catalog. I wasn't sure if you realized then that this album came out after Supporting Caste and before Victory Lap. Might be a minor detail all in all, but important for the going backwards thing.
Want to hear what NOFX’s Decline was based off… check out the track “From The Cradle To The Grave” by the Subhumans. The almost 17min long track is a punk prequel from this UK based band that was recorded in 1984…
I will keep patiently waiting for your full album review of "How To Clean Everything". Admittedly, knowing what you like about the band, it won't be your favorite, but it'll still be a lot of fun.
Great reaction and breakdown, as always. “What the hell was that?” 😂😂😂 One of my favorite bands. Unrelated, and slightly different, I think a good reaction would be Sunny Day Real Estate - “In Circles.” Very cool bass line.
Man, thank you so much for your videos, I discovered your channel this last summer thanks to the previous one on propagandhi cuz they shared it on their fb. Propagandhi is, for 30yrs now, my favorite band of the universe, top n°1 (imo nobody's better.. and i love so many style of music but!) I haven't watch this video yet but I'm sure you will make me love them a little more through your great analysis 🎉 Damn, you are so cool, if you check for my comment on the previous propa video you did, I ask propa'fan why they don't mention this one (with the amazing taping section, ahah I can't wait to see your face earing it😅) that's what I love the most when I look at you discovering the music that has shape me and my life.. All/Descendents, Satanic surfers, bad religion, nofx, .. Thanks again and keep on making punkrock's fans smiling with your amazed faces, I feel less alone when I see someone understanding that punkrock is not only raw energy but also very technical intentions.. aah I talk too much.. best regards 😊❤
Hey Mr. Low End University, your joy in analyzing the songs you choose is addictive - and that is a compliment - do I detect some Zen- Philosophy here?! ( thanks from Palermo, Sicily)
I've seen Todd switch up between a pick and fingers during a few songs when I've seen them. It's amazing to watch Todd, and also Brian from A Wilhelm Scream, play so well while rocking out super hard. It makes you appreciate them even more!
Although is very different vocals wise, their first album is great. You should check out "Haillie Sallase, Up Your Ass" or "Showdown". I don't really like too much tracks with Todd on vocals, so that's a plus for that album, he wasn't there yet.
So glad you're loving this band and going through their catalog. Gotta say, I don't think a month has gone by in the last 25 years that I have not listened to their first album at least once. They're great all the way through.
Fun fact - The Failed States cover art was painted by Todd. I’d love to see you do Cut into the Earth off of Potemkin City Limits. I’ve always loved that track.
One of my favourite propagandhi tunes. So many great songs to choose from. Night letters, rattan cane, without love, bringer of greater things the, dark matters, nigredo, lotus gait the list goes on and on
The one album I skipped until recently. I should've listened a lot sooner. Thanks for pushing me to dive deep. I was prepping for this and wanted to have a good feel for the album. It's just as solid in its own way as their other albums
Very much looking forward to watching the Failed States full album review when it appears 🙂 (And to Propagandhi, if you’re reading this, I’m very much looking forward to hearing the new album when it appears! Hurry up 😀)
Found this album while going to college. Was a propagandhi fan before but didn’t know this came out. This album was the soundtrack to doing homework and writing papers. Love this album. ❤🤘🏻
Propagandhi is freakin amazing, been loving this band for over 20 years, happy to see you're getting sucked in too! You gave them the STANK FACE, that says it all.
Hey man, you have to react to Unexpect's "Words". ChaotH, the bass player has a Bass playthrough of the song if you'd prefer that. But the bass work on that song, and the band in particular is amazing.
I do think the next punk band you need to dive into is Dillinger Four. “Shiny Things Is Good” off of their Versus God album is probably a good starting point.
Would love to see your reaction to Andrew Kim from INFERI playing through Aeons Torn. He even has an official playthrough on the bands channel so you can really see his technique.
I've been blessed growing up listening to these guys since I'm 13, in Canada we have some secret gems Propagandhi being one of them and Grimskunk being second.
That's been my Steam username since the album came out... ironically I'm basking in the plasma glow of my home entertainment prison whenever I launch a game from there.
Today I learned the word "ostinato" and I'm going to use it out of context because nobody I know will have a clue. Love Propagandhi / Love Low End University. These videos inspire my album playlists for the week to come.

@@blairmcmackin8857 fuck yeah HTCE was on the daily playlist for years.
I really love that you are a fan of them now. One of the BEST to ever do it. Honestly, your channel is the only thing worth watching these days
You're the best!
Seeing Propagandi and A Wilhelm Scream getting this much bass recognition makes me so happy
Failed states full album on Patreon LETS GO
Really looking forward to when we get to Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes. Blew my mind as a teen when it came out.
Back to the Motor League....🤘
It’s still their crowning moment. I still can’t get into failed states. Love every other record. But TETM is just perfect

We named unscripted moments: a podcast about propagandhi after this song.
I came here to make a joke about that!
