I get the feeling it was mostly Yuval & Mark that had the most problems with Mike as Sebastian seems the most comfortable with Mike naturally on stage. I get a strong feeling of contempt from everyone else though just by looking at their faces, especially Yuval.
There was, and never will be, a band even remotely comparable to Soul Coughing. I feel we’re all lucky to have Mike Doughty, even though his great solo stuff isn’t like what he did with SC. He’s the most underrated singer songwriter in history.
they were absolutely on fire live - unique blend of jazz , rock , sample sounds , great bass and drums & guitar . I saw them 3 or 4 times in the 90's - it was a must to see them ....full of good humor and divine grooves .
I discovered them probably just around the time they broke up. I was 6/7 in 2000, and Cartoon Network played videos for Circles and Rolling set to classic cartoons during commercial breaks. I was always particularly mesmerized when they would come on. Years later as a teenager I listened to the rest of their stuff and got really into them, even saw Mike play Ruby Vroom with a full band in 2019. I wonder how many other kids my age developed a love of Soul Coughing from those videos as well.
I can't say enough of how awesome this band was. Mike Doughty should do everything in his power to put this quartet back together, if only for a reunion tour and then see where it goes from there.
+IHeartButtercuts I would love this as much as the next person, but Mike apparently hated his time in Soul Coughing and hates his former bandmates to this day, so hell would pretty much have to freeze over for this to happen.
+IHeartButtercuts He was robbed for the rights to his own songs. These former bastions of music are cashing and laughing, for shit. Why would he? They are more leeches than mates.
IHeartButtercuts I hear you though, if all this shit WEREN'T true, I would've loved to see where this band went. They were original and creative, and somehow made catchy and super listenable tunes while blending so many different genres of music with unique, cryptic, poet lyrics. There aren't a ton of bands that could pull that off, so it was sad to see them disintegrate in the 90's. They were one of my favorites.
He made a great joke at 2:30. He said "Don't need to,.. with Ercil,..... walk in circles" maybe I heard that wrong but I listen to it multiple times. Pretty she that was a joke about someone he knows.
Mike sure knows how to write a stick-in-your-head kind of tune... Jackhole bandmates notwithstanding. I like this one even more now that I know what it was really about [read the book]
Jackholes they may be but it wouldn't have happened without them. I mean that musical chemistry and sound. With other guys it would have been a bit different but from my understanding it was Doughty who was the creative force there. Not to mention the outright douchery of taking all the credit by his lowly as a result bandmates.
According to Mike, Band broke up due to bad blood between the members, drug abuse and finances. Either way, Mike does not speak of them glowingly. In fact, sounded more like an abusive relatonship than a band. And as you said, the second job while airing a hit video on Mtv.
@@ericnevYT Really? He ended SC back in 2000 and it sounded like he wanted nothing to do with them. Even years after the acrimonious split he still harboured animosity towards them...essentially calling SC Nickelback. Soooo.... I really doubt that he tried to reunite them.

definitely a fender, coronado. they dipped into the semi-hollow market now and again, typically with 'thinline telecaster', but also coronado and starcaster. there was also a thinline jaguar for a short while
1:53 is Doughtys secret marketing plan for Zumba fitness, founded 3 years after this video. What he's saying is "Zum-ba Zum-ba Zum- you got the boy, got the boy" which tells insecure women to join 'Zumba,' to 'get the boy.' "Don't need to walk around in circles" is said several times, which itself is going in circles. He doesnt need to, but he does, giving in to his primal instinct. You dont need to buy Zumba but you will. Source: Lies. I made it up. Fuck Zumba. Long live reptilians.
"Better". Better than what? The smell of hot garbage in July? Yeah. MD's mediocre Coffeehouse Rock career and material blows the mind and genre-bending brilliantly original music of Soul Coughing out of the water. I agree with non sequitur. You are higher than a Georgia pine.

Cant wait to see them in a couple months
indeed
I love this band, I hate they were so dysfunctional...there will never be another Soul Coughing. Glad Doughty is free and happy but I miss this sound.
Same here
Not to be redundant but I couldn't agree more. Uncommon sounds that defy catagory. But not just aberent noise.
I get the feeling it was mostly Yuval & Mark that had the most problems with Mike as Sebastian seems the most comfortable with Mike naturally on stage. I get a strong feeling of contempt from everyone else though just by looking at their faces, especially Yuval.
They reunited for a handful of shows.
They're back baby
One of my biggest regrets of the ‘90s was never getting to see Soul Coughing
Always loved the drum & bass grooves on their tunes. Not just another band making the same noise as every other band.
Yeah that fusion of alt rock, jazz, and drum and bass is so good

One thing that puzzles me is why doesn’t he get a bassist, drummer and keyboardist to play with him and do all the old songs.

they are back for the 30th Anniversary of " Ruby Vroom " & will be playing together again in the Fall , In Usa
wow he sings it just like on the album
This music was 20 years ahead of its time. Like if you agree.
Driving home in 1996 in my Audi 4000, Mike changed me forever.
Doughty slips in a Urkel at the end...so brilliant !
Walk around w/Urkel
The real reason the broke up, they couldn't agree on outfits to preform in
There's everybody looking like a unified band showing somewhat of an affiliation...and then there's Yuval. Fucking Yuval..
Yuval was just warm… and he had drumming to do.
1998? wow i was 2, i missed out on some great music but im finding it now :)
