"We are all in some way or another going to Reseda some day to die......."LOVE IT. I CAN'T BELIEVE RUBY VROOM IS 30 YEARS OLD! Zoom Zip and im still a fan.💜✌️
I remember driving through San Fernando Valley many years ago, ironically enough, very close to Reseda, when I first heard this song. The song was introduced as the first time it was being played and after the song, the DJ didn't mention the song or the band's name! Something that I am quite sure, was deliberate in order to generate curiosity and buzz. Still, after hearing this song, I was immediately floored! As a musician, I could immediately hear the special sound in this band. This band took several concepts and made something unique which had never heard before; at least not like this. This will always be one of my favorite songs from this album.
1994 was undoubtedly one of the greatest years for music, so many great albums... Jeff Buckley - Grace, Soundgarden - Superunknown, Stone Temple Pilots - Purple, Pearl Jam - Vitalogy, Liz Phair - Whip-Smart, Meat Puppets - Too High to Die, Beck - Mellow Gold, Live - Throwing Copper... just to mention a few and of course sadly Kurt died, I had a ticket to see them but never did. But praise joy 1994 is still paying out with - Soul Coughing (who I am only now finding for the first time) - fantastic stuff.
l was at a club in Melbourne Australia and they had a downstairs area which was completely different to the rest of the club. l heard this hook and was instantly drawn to it. The DJ would put this on around 5am-ish and he would shout, '..and you are LIS-EN-INGGG to FUCKING MELBOURNE!!!' and the crowd would erupt!! It was mental and absolutely mind-numbing t the same time. lt was so infectious, l would find myself frequently at that club just so l could be in that basement around 4am -6am to make sure l had my hit before heading home (work or no work in 3 hours time).
The beat quality to the lyrics will always impress me! Mike delivers like a modern-day Allen Ginsberg. And in this particular song, he even sounds like Allen.
Fucking KILLER man! S.C. was one of the most interesting bands to come out of the 90's scene. Such grooves and hooks. Get you hooked like a junkie on their sweet smooth as vermouth sound. God I wish they got back together for a reunion but I KNOW that'll never happen. At least we have TH-cam

@@2metersessies The way the snare, bass, and sampled horns are mixed together adds this hypnotic, almost cinematic undercurrent to the whole thing. That mix pulls you in, sets the mood, and makes the spoken words hit even harder. The raw, surreal blend of cynicism and poetry, the imagery, the tone, the weirdly hypnotic rhythm-it all felt like truth, even if I couldn’t fully understand it. It felt adult, like I was eavesdropping on a world I hadn’t entered yet, and that made it both unsettling and fascinating.
30 years ago, I moved to Los Angeles. One night in late ‘94 or early ‘95, I saw them open for someone at The Whisky and I was hooked. This song became my theme song for next 25 years. I was able to see them many more times and eventually at Bumbershoot when they played inside Key Arena to an unfilled festival crowd. I know it was painful for some of the members, but the art and result was amazing!

a band whose individual members were each so incredibly talented that there was no way in seven hells they would all tolerate each other for as long as they did. but the fact that they stuck around long enough to make the music they made has made the universe a much richer place for it.
"Slacker jazz" indeed. Massively underrated and too volatile to last. Only 3 albums, which seems to be a curse. Screaming Blue Messiahs also only lasted 3 albums. Damn shame.
Just finished Doughty's book. Apparently, he didn't get along with the band, still doesn't get along with them, and can't stand them. But he still writers similar stuff. He isn't a fan of uniqueness for uniqueness' sake, though. He just likes melodies that sound good. His solo work is pretty good, but more simplistic (whereas the rest of the band were about experimental, wacky stuff).
@@Duglasfresh I agree and beg to differ. If I read Mike’s book, he claims his bandmates were pricks and admits he was as well. Then there was this interview with Mark where even he agrees everyone quarreled amongst each other, I’d take it it’s everyone that set the wheels apart.

A rare drummer. No frills, no fills. Just solid as a rock. Wish there were more drummers like him.

I dunno... fills aren't a bad thing... though I imagine the reason they're so popular is because people believe they take more skill.
