I'm touched. Now let's remember why we're all here and celebrate a unique band who made a couple of incredible albums that made me feel a little bit special at an age when that was important.
I played the hell put of Soul Coughing in the 90s . I never really listened to the lyrics. Here, later in life, bored during a pandemic, I am pulling out old CDs and finding myself actually listening and resesrching the songs. This song is much much deeper and sad than I could have imagined. Mike Doughty said in an interview "It's about a guy who does heroin that falls in love with a girl who's drunk, and they don't really click because their drugs aren't really compatible." Let's just open up a can of emotions and dump them everywhere.
They lied...stop advertising about inference that's free, you government schill. They dfc care about you either. fool and loser. Just indicates you're paid by them. Youre not a leader. I'll make multiple nations under God....bit**. 😂😂
I've seen Soul Coughing 4 times in my life up until last Tuesday in Minneapolis which was number 5. Words cannot describe how much I LOVE this band! My face hurt from smiling and even got emotional during this song. Now that its over, I'm left with an empty feeling like there's nothing left except old age and just memories of my 20's. Mark Sandman said from Morphine....DO NOT GO QUIETLY UNTO YOUR GRAVE!
I've never heard this song before, but there's something amazing about it- I think he more or less only uses the first 5 notes of the major scale in the entire song (although he uses a flat 7th degree I think in a couple of spots), yet the band manages to keep harmonically and sonically reinterpreting those 5 notes like shifting clouds in the sky, creating this constantly shifting sonic skyscape. That and his trippy, poignant lyrics create an amazingly powerful piece. Wow. So impressed.
"When all the noise has left your head Will someday you rise off the bed? I'll be there to lift you, lazybones." In only 3 lines he somehow manages to sum up battling depression.
lyrics.. samplles.. voice.. underrated band of 90s,, Lazy bones, sleeping in the shade How you 'spect to get your cornmeal made? You'll never get your corn meal made Sleeping in the evening shade 90s was the era of abstract lyrics..
to quote Mike Doughty it's about a guy and girl who are trying to fall in love but she's a drunk and he's a smack freak and they just can't coincide together but i love this song
I love Mike Doughty's voice its a little nasally but that adds flavor, attitude, and personality to the song ;-) but over all love Soul Coughing even though its slang for having a protein spill lol
It is logically impossible to more or less unique. It contradicts the meaning of the word 'unique'. You'd have thought a fan of the band responsible for the lyric "correlation is not causation" would understand this. Still, no-one likes a pedant, and fucking awesome track.

Just put this song on and i'm 18 again.... amazing the power of music

Can’t believe how much I missed out not ever seeing this band live - uggh.
Every little now and then. When my moment of weakness comes back and I turn to stare on the past, I always find my way back to this song.

PODCAST catharsis
Just read an interview with Mike Doughty, concerning his new book, and apparently he hates the music he made with this band:(
He was the youngest punk of a very hip fusion band. They didn’t get along.
"When all the noise has left your head
Will someday you rise off the bed?
I'll be there to lift you, lazybones."
In only 3 lines he somehow manages to sum up battling depression.
Addiction as well.
