Thanks Javier, really glad you're enjoying the videos. There's plenty more to come, I just finished putting the fully rebuilt engine back in the chassis, lots of videos to come

Thanks buddy. I'm going to have to do a mega time lapse of the whole thing, and maybe an engine time lapse also

Great video and very helpful as I'm also rebuilding my TC with the Ashcroft high ratio mod. A quick question re the output shaft: I have checked the end-float & preload on the shaft and both are in spec - I'm experiencing the same problem as you in that although the low ratio gear spins on the shaft (when not engaged) it is pretty tight and doesn't spin freely - can I ask why will that cause a problem? Thanks in advance.

Graham, thabks for the comment. Much appreciated.
I've rewatched the video to try and get my head back into it.... I'm afraid its rather hard for me to remember exactly the arrangement but I think.....
Its a problem when you're in low range as there will excess heat and friction generated as the high ratio gear spins at a different speed to tye low range gear (I think they all go at the same speed in high ratio). That will result in galling after a fairly short time and it will o ly get worse until something seizes up.
I believe thats the case anyway :)

@@lozl Thanks for the quick response.
I guess that does make sense and for the sake of a couple of hours work removing, relieving the circlip and reinstalling the output shaft and gears it's better to be safe than sorry. Thanks again, your videos have been a huge help.

@@grahamabbey3835 that was the conclusion I came to, I normally.mull it over for a night or two then sort of "give myself no choice" but to redo the work, it's annoying as I do lots of things twice. But luke you said it's gotta be worth the time I think.
Good luck! And thanks for the kind comments

Hi, all the work you've done is great, congratulations, I want to start assembling my series 3 with the Ashcroft upgrade kit, I wanted to ask you if the axle where the new bearings have to be put is the same one that is in the box or comes with the kit, the one that appears at minute 3.14, I am from Uruguay and there is no one here who has placed the kit, so I will be the first and I have several questions. Greetings and thank you, Javier.

@@javierst8387 Thanks Javier, glad the videos help. That's very exciting being the first, really cool. It looks to me like an excellent modification, ifs the gearing it should have had from the factory.
The shaft is the original shaft. If I remember correctly, they machine the casing and send out the new gears etc only. You are meant to resuse the the shaft or source a new one if yours is no good.
I found plenty wrong with this gearbox so it has clearly had a hard life, but I found that shaft to be fine, I guess yours will be OK too hopefully.
      Good luck with the project.

What was the Ashcroft mod for ? Give the box longer gearing, lower revs for mph?

    • @lozl

Thanks for the comment, much appreciate.
Yes that's exactly it. Apologies I should have revisited this. I think I explained it in a video but it was probably around a year ago now.
Its favourable over the overdrive as its simpler (in operation, although probably not singlet to fit), it's stronger, it gives a longer top ratio too, it also means you can still fit a PTO on the rear of the transfer box.
Its favourable over changing the diffs, as its only one job rather than two, and the speedo still reads the correct speed.
The end result I believe is 31% longer ratios in all high ratio gears. I'm sure I don't need to tell you but this obviously improves noise levels in the cabin (apparently this is vastly improved), and of course fuel efficiency is greatly improved.
The potential sting in the tail that some people have found is that it can struggle going up even a modest slope in top gear. I'm hoping the freshly rebuilt engine will minimise this issue.

No Roamer Drive dipstick?? They are bloody expensive but make topping up the gearbox/transfer case bliss. Nice work mate!!

I hadn't heard of such a thing until you said. I had to Google it. That's a nice little addition to the transfer case (especially as its already slightly leaking). It's gone back to the owner now and I don't suppose I would be able to get any more spending out if him now :)
Thabks for your kind comment, much appreciated :)
