Great Video. We have a Land Rover 110 with a J suffix R380. Odd enough the input shaft (primary pinion) is the same length as the short belhousing LT77 input shaft sitting on the shop floor. At first we thought this was a Stumpy input shaft, but the stumpy shaft is about 1.5" shorter. This has to be an input shaft from another marque. The overall length of this R380 is 1.5" longer than a stumpy and has a LT77 belhousing. Any idea where the input shaft came from that is 1.5" longer than a stumpy input shaft?
Excellent video & Greetings from Paris ! Regarding the R380 gearbox, I have a defender TD5 year 2003. If I up-shift quickly with high RPM from 1st to 2d, or 2d to 3d, I feel a crunch/grind in my hand (not so loud to hear it in the vehicle, I can just feel it with my hand). If I leave the RPM/rev normal, and leave a 1 second pause on Neutral between these gears, all is fine. No crunch when downshifting. The gearbox runs with new MTF94 oil. Is this a normal behavior for a R380 ? Are we supposed to UP shift slowly with these gearboxes, losing momentum ? Losing momentum is not an issue on flat road, but annoying climbing a slope. Many thanks for your help and feedback ! Julien
Hi your videos are very helpful and I thank you for that my friend The question is are they interchangeable on a defender? And what do I need to do about the shifters?
Whatever the workshop manual recommends. Usually, PAS fluid or Dextron 2 which is also the automatic transmission fluid of its era or if it will like it MTF94 ( Manual Transmission Fluid ) which is used in the later R380 gearboxes. The earlier LT77 gearboxes do not like MTF 94 oils.
I just had fitted an LT77 51/H suffix ex reconed MOD stock and the gears are are stiff and it wont go into 5th at all the mechanic said hes fitted boxes from ashcroft worse than mine and they wear and get easier , will 5th then become select-able ?
There is a lot involved in the rebuilding of the LT77 R380. Take a look at the workshop manual for the relevant gearbox ( including suffix number relevance). That will give you an indication whats involved.
Brilliant - I have the manual and am just finishing up the transfer box rebuild. Will see how many 'specialist tools' I need to make ! May well just go down the Ashcroft route to save some time and save learning about gearboxes for my series one rebuild !
Awesome video! Thanks for taking the time to film & explain!

wow! quite amazing! couldn't have asked for a clearer demonstration!

Fantastic video. Can't thank you enough for the time you put into this.

Hi, great informative vid. Will an ex-Defender 2.5 petrol gearbox do the job, if fitted to a 200TDi?
No. Because the input ratios are different.
FANTASTIC VIDEO. Thank you very much. Very interested to see part 2. Will rewards this one then too. Well done!
Amazing explanations, astounding knowledge. Thanks for sharing mate!
Thank you!
What is the recommended oil for lt77

@@trailerfitter2 why no MTF94 in LT77?

Hi mate,
Just rebuilding my LT230 and need to do the R380 as well. How much more involved is it? Thanks James

Excellent video
How the hell do i put one of these in a rover sd1 v8 auto
Find the engine and gearbox that fits the SD1?
excellent as always !! like it ..
nice, really something very interesting!!
