I know I'm a little late but do NOT watch the final two episodes after End of Eva, watch them before. They may or may not take place during End of Eva but should be watched before, not after. Eva is best consumed in the order it came out in. Also the manga isn't confusing. It's an alternate take on the story (made after the anime) that's not too hard to follow. Honestly Eva as a whole is easy to follow, people just overthink it. Also to the people saying the Rebuilds don't matter, they are wrong. The Rebuilds do matter, a lot. Watch them after End of Eva.
Hard disagree I watched it in the natural order and came out of it realizing how much better it is to swap them around. The movie is the proper continuation while the show ending is more like a nice complimentary secret ending that is thought provoking. Watching it in the natural order takes you out of things before the real end which is not ideal.
Also you have to watch the director's cut version for EoE, otherwise some plot points will seem like asspulls. I believe Netflix and most streaming sites have the director's cut versions by default tho
@holczy0 End of Evangelion doesn't have a director's cut. I think you're thinking of episodes 21-24 which have director's cuts that include extra footage added in Death and Rebirth. But yeah, the director's cut version of the episodes are better and pretty much all copies (legal or not) that you'll see online are the director's cut unless you go out of your way.
I disagree personally, this is just release order with the first and second endings swapped, and excluding the manga. The one major change to the watch order he made is irrelevant IMO, and if anything, the ending of EOE is more appreciated after watching the first ending. A proper Watch order for Eva: Watch all the animated content in release order, read the manga if you want to, or don't. Problem is, this doesn't exactly make an interesting TH-cam short.

You can't appreciate the failure of the instrumentality project without Episode 25 and 26. They are two fully distinct endings. It is completely subjective which order you watch them in, and they are not "connected" other than being two ways to resolve the same plot. However, EOE as an alternative is much more satisfying when you have seen episode 26. This was the order I watched it first, and this is my favorite show, so bare minimum for me and the majority of people who will watch Eva, this is a perfectly acceptable if not ideal watch order. TL;dr-I stand by what I said even more so because of this comment, and genuinely encourage anyone reading this to not even consider watching EOE first.

Hence Kaworu waking up in a casket, just after countless caskets that were already open, but before countless caskets that had yet to open. And the final Rebuild movie literally brings up events from the previous series, confusing them with current events of the sequel, if only briefly, and then concludes the story about a boy who became friends with Lilith and Adam by going, "He finally figured it out. He finally ended the cycle."

It’s worth noting that Evangelion is an extremely unusual and atypical Japanese anime series in that the anime was actually produced BEFORE the manga! Probably something like 97% of all Japanese anime is based on an already existing manga - then the existing manga panels are used as storyboards and for art templates, and of course all the plot and dialogue is right there as well. Evangelion, on the other hand, was actually produced as an anime first and then a manga based on that anime was produced afterward. It almost NEVER happens that way.
in my opinion evangelion isnt an anime you completely understand the first time you watch it. Id recommend watching the anime first, watching a youtube video breaking everything down and then rewatching it. It makes everything make sense.

Hard disagree. Watch all of the original series before EoE. Yes, the last two episodes are abstract, but that just adds to your interest in watching the events of EoE. You get much more out of it in that order, otherwise the last two episodes feel pretty flat and unimportant outside of the final sequence.

I think this is a great recommendation! However I would also highly recommend the Manga. I’m biased because I got into it as a Kid almost two decades ago before I even watched the series, but yeah, it’s amazing and features one of the most beautiful art-styles out there.
My preference is watch the all 25 episodes, watch the movie, then rewatch the final two episodes, watch the rebuilds, then read the manga if you want more.
I'll be honest, you should totally read the Manga. It's concepts make the story a bit more approachable, and honestly depending on your view/interpretation actually adds to the continuity of the over-all series.

Don't bother with the Rebuild movies, only the third one has some interesting parts, the last one is very unnecessarily long with a quick forced happy ending throwing away the important stuff the series built.
The manga has some very good art in it, however the major conclusive parts are completely different from the original series and, as the fourth rebuild movie, betrays and ruins plot, meaning and characters
