Fixing a Greasy Old Air Compressor - 1953

  • This 80 gallon compressor from the 1950's needed some maintenance to get it back in top form. Situation normal, always fixing up-something... One of the best things about these older air compressors is how quiet they are, you can stand next to one when running and still hold a relatively normal conversation! Sure, you could have spent a $150 for a new import compressor that would strain ear drums and work for a few years until it burned up, or you could throw out your back on a chunk of American iron.

Definitely a case of "those who have to ask don't get it". Awesome vid, man. Saving cool old stuff is sadly becoming a lost art.

Awesome to see more junk come back to life. I love the sound of those old air compressors, soothing shop background noise.

For sure, it's so nice being able to talk while the compressor is running, and it just sounds "solid"

Great video! I have an old single cylinder compressor in the garage that needs to be put back into action. Thanks for the motivation.

Another save of some rusty crusty gold! Nice work Toocheap. Believe it or not, about 35 years ago we had a GE fan nearly identical to the one you fixed, this one too had reverse, but was push button operation. It wasn't working well so my dad pitched it to the curb. Me always being me grabbed it. I got it working again, removed the guts from the square surround and hung it above my work bench in the garage. Instant ceiling fan!😉. I had to rewire it so i could mount the control unit on the wall. Dad just shook his head in disbelief, LOL. btw, great meeting you at the Findlay Lake sled show. Looking forward to your next great video!

Haha, thanks man, good to meet you too. Once you get used to getting free "trash" items running again it's hard to pay for new junk!

Got this same compressor. Put it on a old propane tank. Extreme custom made works like a champ. Believe it or not that pump is still made. Everything is on Grainger.

I’ve dealt with 2 older air compressors one was like the champion in the video but only 5 gallons. Tank cracked at the welds so it was junked. The second is a 90s 60 gallon sanborn that needed wiring and general setup. I need to find a way to get the factory 2” plugs out, I’d like to use them, but I have the 1/2 inch side in use and that’s good enough for almost anything.

Great video man. Love to see the restoration of "junk" to see it run for more years. Way better than the new trash it and forget crap they make now.🙂
    Take it easy man. Peace.😎

Makes me wonder how old the one in the garage is that my dad picked up when I was a kid. They do run quiet compared to the new ones but I don't think he's ever inspected the inside of the tank.

It's a proper design with a mechanical unloaded and of industrial quality instead of the sorry disposable shit that's sold to consumers today. I hunt used industrial compressors to add to my system which is plumbed with red air hose (3/4" ID in my case) and Chicago couplings instead of pipe. Quick, easy, rugged and easy to rearrange. It does pay to borescope the tanks!

what horse power motor does your compressor use? I have something similar that I just picked up. but seems to fill very slowly. I guess I should look into a pulley swap.
