@theironhorse6600 Very kind words, Sir!! I've got a couple of interesting things in the pipe; some of which, I haven't spoken with you about yet!! That ol' "box" ain't no place for thinkin!!
@bigmoustacheal3295 Awesome!! As a saw rookie myself, (my pronouns are "hack" and "dummy" 😂 ) you are in good company; I'm learning right along with you!!!
With headers and pipes it’s all about thermal restriction and how the thermals are working in the pipe, those kind of pipes are working on thermals/rather than sonic wave so glad you pointed that out. Hot air does not like going through cold air. It will create a thermal dam/restriction. Some people might even be surprised to know that top fuel dragsters headers even though it’s just a straight open pipe is tuned to a specific length so there’s no thermal restriction.
@jonathanhensley8685 YES SIR!!! I was just talking to a fellow tonight and was telling him about the pipe on my pulling tractor from years ago; I had a genuine dyno for tractors (at the time) and know how to tune the length of a pipe with a thermometer; I translated THAT to the saws... it's one of just a few things that translate between 2 stroke and 4 stroke. It's a combination of thermals, and the speed at which the gasses are moving... or greatly slowing, for a moment. Thanks for adding; you were able to put it into far better words than I!!
@jaysparrowhawk9388 Harvey is a standup guy, ain't he??!! I'm sure happy you decided to stop in and say hello and awful glad to have you here. I can't hold a candle to Harvey's knowledge, but we sure have fun testing stuff. Thanks stopping in and especially for joining-in.
I bought a MS361 kit a while back along with some extra piston / cylinder kits and some other parts to do some experimenting with. That's going to be my winter project hopefully. It seems like with some porting it can probably do 90% of what I use both smaller and bigger saws for.
@JohnSheerin Dad has a 361 (genuine) that he's had for many years; it *IS* a good all-around saw even in stock form. Like you, I think a spicy 361 will put my MS440 out of business. THEN I can spice the 440 to put the 660 out of business... THEN I can spice the 660... where does it end??!! 🤣🙄
@@HayChaffandSawdust1 Yeah, I bought some cylinders for my 660 clone at the same time, so that would be the next project. I've seen people get the 361 over 660 levels of power, but I assume it might have heat and/or longevity issues. So maybe 361 for most things for me (mostly clearing storm damage, so shorter cuts) and keep the 660 a bit milder as I want to do some milling with it.
@JohnSheerin Sounds like pretty decent plan!! I think I will start mild and build up so that I can test and share along the way. I don't need it for a saw to use; I just want it as a test mule to try different things and theories. Those 660s can be beasts!!
@toddzilla6491 Thanks!! I enjoy making them and collecting data; it's only ONE more step to share the knowledge! Thanks for putting the last piece in the puzzle by watching and joining-in down here!
U can see some variation between the different stinger lengths and torque most likely the diameter - There definitely is a “sweet spot” where all the stars align giving you the best overall power. The Ironhorse pipe design really broadens the torque curve and performs well in the timber. Good vidja - tainment here !
@fabzacres-blackcat Yes DIAMETER!!! I ain't even got off in the weeds with THAT yet. I suspect that larger diameter will also need longer length... that's just my suspicion. I know that YOU know, but building pipes and changing pipes AIN'T a 10 minute job!! The adjustable one saved me countless hours, but I can't change the diameter easily/quickly. Speaking of 'tainment... didn't know you plucked a geeetar!!

@fabzacres-blackcat Man O Man, he can sure bend them gee-tar strings, can't he??!! I've never seen him before (but my music taste is a little antiquated); one of my favorites is Jerry Reed; there's a neat/cool story about him being hired to play the guitar for Elvis' release of "Guitar Man"; he actually had the upper-hand in negotiations... because NO ONE else could replicate the sound. I ain't no musician... I can't even play the radio, but I enjoy good tunes.
I think it would be fabulous to see a bunch of subs in here all pick up a 361 lego kit or pre built, do what ever level of modifications they are comfortable with, and then send you a video file of the saw. Say a 30 second clip with an overview of their build and a cut, for a Chanel hosted compilation. Maybe near the end of winter or something, after you have time to show us all the best modifications of course. Outstanding work with the pipe, thank you for sharing.
@Archer_82 Good idea!! I was going a different direction by getting a PO Box (for just a modicum of anonymity) so people could send a pipe, piston, carb (or whatever) for "Ruth" (I've already named the "Mule" after Festus' Mule on Gunsmoke... even though I aint even bought the saw yet... waiting on feedback on whether or not the 361). I got waaaay off in the weeds there, didn't I?? Anyway, if people wanted to pay the postage both ways, I could test certain bolt-on parts or deeper parts if the situation warrants it. That's the direction I was going, but I like your idea just as well, if not better. Thanks for being a dependable sounding board!!
Rather than peak hp and peak hp rpm it's probably a better measure of a saw to show how many idiot bricks you could stack under the graph. The graph at 13:18 shows that the idiot bricks weigh about the same but you can fit a whole heap more of them under the red tarp compared to the other 2.
@Alan_Hans__ Hahaha! Now there's an idea!! Alan, if we ever get *REAL GOOD* we could try to build saws to produce a HP curve of a specific shape... kinda like looking at clouds and seeing bears, birds, etc... I could take orders for "I want a saw with a torque curve that looks like the roof line of a 1972 Buick Skylark!!" Dangit, we're on to something NOW!!!!
@Alan_Hans__ You dang whippersnappers!! I suppose you want me to do it while modding an ELECTRIC CHAINSAW too?? ... I'll get to rewinding the stator... BRB... 😉🤣
@190mech1 Thanks for the feedback; I've already got them in the "cart", but I ain't pulled the trigger yet; been waiting to get this video to get edited, released, and (hopefully) get a little feedback... unlike sometimes in life, your vote matters here! 😉
That was so boring I'll have to watch it again to get to sleep tonight. I still like your cut factor idea. RPM is too important to ignore and just watch HP. Good stuff indeed.
@Kevin.L_ You caught me!! I'm trying to break into the "white noise" market!! People actually PAY for stuff to put 'em to sleep??!! I agree; dyno numbers without further considerations, are near worthless... I aint selling cars or chainsaws, so a "number" ain't a "selling point", is it!!?? Thanks Kevin; be safe!!
@stevenfan1218 There are two reasons; reason #1 is that, when doing timed test cuts or attempting to determine a gain/loss in cut time, revving the saw before going into the wood removes the factor starting revving while in the wood; it's also easier to determine beginning time when reviewing video to check for gains. The #2 reason (or maybe the #1 reason?) is monkey-see/monkey-do. Personally, I don't cut firewood in the same manner that I test saws either. While I can see that it would be annoying to see someone run a saw in this manner, there is a specific time/reason why "we" do it. Hope that helps; thanks for joining-in and coming along.
@alltherpm 😁😉 I, being a hack and all, like to have SOMETHING of a variable in each test to be the scapegoat... I can't be bothered by accepting my OWN responsibility!! Thanks for joining-in; welcome!!
