I just was laughing my butt off when old Dyno Joe did his dyno test of little muffler pipes and the one that made the most power was the design that you had been showing for a couple years!!! 😂👍. Turns out old Harvey isn’t just a crazy old dude…he knows what the heck he’s talking about!!!! We all are better when we are sharing our ideas and thoughts and building on ideas because we all come from different background’s… even if it’s I help you with something and then you help me with something… I think it’s all about respecting each other!
This reminds me of a buddy of mine in freshman year of high school. His dad worked every day after work on building an exhaust setup on a 56 Chevy step side pickup. He had a 283 engine in it, he ran dual pipes off the headers ,then he custom made chrome stacks to come up through each corner in the front part of the bed. He was a welder by trade so it was easy for him. We learned a lot helping in the build. When we were done, that was the most beautiful sound coming out of those stacks in the bed. Keep up the good work !

Glad to hear you read all of these, I'm gearing up to do my first ever ported saw on a 2171/371 and it's been such a resource being able to pour over you and tinmans video. I honestly don't think I could have ever gotten to this point in my chainsaw journey without you guys lifting the veil and really opening the doors to people. It's really grown the community and it really seems like a whole new era of chainsaws is coming away from behind closed doors on the forums and here for everyone here on TH-cam

Now I don't even want to bother with muffler modding, unless it's a saw that needs to be somewhat sane db wise. Haven't tried one on a strato saw yet. Iron Horse, I want to Thank You for taking the time to make and share this pipe video and others. I have used it a lot more this year and it works well. Anyone can build it even with a coat hanger or wire and a torch, gas weld wire like I did my 1st, Brazing wire,mig,tig,even a stick welder with some care. Simple yet very effective.
One thing I really like about this design is how it's not a box or a mass of pipes in that area infront of the cylinder meaning it's not holding the heat up against the cylinder.

I bought a new Yamaha YZ-80-A in 1974 it was 5.5 HP 16 mm carb. The next year I bought a GYT Kit for it .. with cylinder head , Piston and 24 MM carb ..and expansion chamber K&N air filter that took it to about 12 HP over the next couple of years I ported to the point I could beat all other 80's and stay right with a 125 It would smoke a Yamaha DT-250 Enduro and Kawaski 350 Green Horn and it would beat Honda XL0250's and 350's .. Of course it weighed less than half as much and I was about 115# Then I got a New 1976 Yamaha MX-125-C .. I did a bunch of Port work and pulled the whole shot in the fist Motocross race I was ever in at age 16. Too bad I really didn't know how to race.. as I got passed by most everyone by the end of the race..

I built a stainless one a year ago, to your specs and what a difference it made, loud but more power. Definitely had to lean the saw quite a bit. If you’ve got the choice of stainless over steel go stainless.
4/13/23 - I got one of these pipe mufflers on my MS391. Made to the same dimensions and design as shown. I had a muff mod previously with a pipe added on the stock muffler. Ironhorse was right. The saw went rich rich after I added the new pipe muffler. Once I leaned it and re tuned, I was pushing more air and making more power in the cut. Throttle response picked up as well. Good design and worthwhile upgrade.
I built a pipe for my 372 and I used two railroad spikes side by side and hammered them in the end of the pipe and they made a perfect end to match a 372 exhaust port
Theres nothing like the smell of race gas and good oil! Just made one for a 51 of mine ironhorse used 4 inches of 1 1/4" for the main tube and 2 1/2"s of 3/4 for my exit and I'll tell you it sure woke it the heck up over the factory modified muffler and porting! Anybody that is considering building one they are a real upgrade they work and work good!
I’ve got a CS2255 Jonsered saw that was stock with 24 inch bar on it and just sharpened chain that I timed cutting wedge off 20 inch piece of ash Then I installed your ported muffler for that saw I had bought on eBay Tuned saw to muffler and timed cutting wedge through same 20 inch ash Turned saw into a screaming demon!! Percentage wise cut through 22% faster Love your product Bushman
I'm going to be quite happy enough getting my crusty old 61 back running sweet without getting too much into porting. Having said that, if I'm ever going to port a saw it would be that one. Got a second one with it as a basket case which I believe is a stronger engine. Both are terribly corroded in the cases and fully the definition of a turd saw, but I like my Huskies and the 61 is a great firewood saw even dead stock. Must admit I've been distracted by a lovely stihl 440 I got for $150 that needed nothing more than a new plug and proper tuning - a really nice step up from the 61 and the venerable stihl 390 i've thrashed for over 20 years now...
Pretty cool I built my 028 super and when building the muffler I actually used 2 1/2 piece's of tubing and made an x design I used the old gutted muffler as an expansion tube it raised HP very noticeably the throttle response is crazy sounds like an old kx dirt bike getting ready to do it to a bb dcs6401

This video is perfect timing, I just came in from testing a saw in preparation to do some pipe testing and some experimental designs. I'm working on a Poulan 2150 that I just finished. The stock can the front comes off and the baffle comes out, so I'm going to make a new front for it so I can experiment with stinger location, length and size. I have a few ideas 😉 I'm also going to make a small version of your pipe for it as well. I really want to see what happens with some simple intake and exhaust work with a pipe to keep it a simple build. I'm tired of watching people just willy nilly drilling holes in exhaust cans claiming it adds power
I have a motorized bicycle, the engine came from a friends back yard, full of dirt, etc...but it was only the engine. I traded some work for it, brought it home, cleaned it up and made a list of parts needed. One of the parts needed was the exhaust pipe/muffler so I ordered one, installed it and rode the bike (after I had all the parts for the bike and installed of course) and it did good (as far as I knew) but it was quite loud so I thought I'd try and make one and researched how noise is reduced. I came up with my version of a turbo muffler from an scrap tall skinny camping propane tank. I cut the tank in half welded in a center plate.The inlet pipe went through the top and center and dumped in the bottom, second pipe from top of bottom chamber to top of upper chamber and outlet pipe went from bottom of upper chamber through the bottom of bottom chamber where it exited. The bike is now at least half as loud and goes twice as fast. Not sure how but it works and plan on making more.

If you're going to build an exhaust that is quiet, build the exhaust similar to a suppressors design. You'll have to figure out volumetric efficiency of the saw... not only for the Intake, but, the exhaust as well... a stock saw would be perfect for a baseline... just have to figure the known volumes for the intake charge/cylinder... and the same for the exhaust... knowing those you can convert it to percentages, ratios or whatever works best for you. I'm new to all of this, but, I have some "thing" in the works specifically dealing with Exhausts/muffle cans.
I built one of your exhausts for my dolmar 7910 and it rips! Quite a drastic difference in top end performance. It holds rpm really well, much better than stock. I wear muffs so noise is no problem
Sunday night I got to work and made one of those pipes finally. I got frustrated messing with the stock can on my ported Poulan 2150 build. It just wouldnt flow right and it was so choked up it was like i had the choke on when I would get it rockin in the wood. It was loading the can up with fuel it was so bad. That pipe made all the difference! It took it from being hardly any air moving from the exhaust to knocking an empty gatorade bottle over from 2 feet away!!! I made the pipe from memory and I ended up with a little more length past the exit pipe. It seems to work just right and it seems to have good pull. How crucial do you think that length is. The little saw is kicking arse for 34cc in a 16" spruce. Thanks for all of your guidance my friend, we all apreciate it.
2.5 - 3 inch tube exhaust ( I.D. Depends on engine size) at a 45degree angle out the can is gonna give ya the best combo of torque and fuel economy imho. I’ve built an Ironhorse pipe and they do broaden the torque curve in the cut for sure , maybe my dimensions weren’t exactly dead-nuts but it seemed to me the “piped out da can” “Bush King” muffler was a hair stronger. Anytime you flow air 90* (in this case exhaust) from the source there is restriction. Dyno Joe did a video comparing some different home made piped exhausts ... Your mileage may vary 😎
Id like to try harveys design and bring the tailpipe so to speak back tword the cylinder, make two that are a bit more than half the diameter. I think i would still have the scavenging and get more heat from the saw.... the concern would be the tailpipe/cyl distance. Im thinking the only way is to just try it out.

Does that long pipe need a support bracket at the end that could mount to those 2 open bolt holes? vibration may shake it loose and strip the muffler mount threads. Love your channel.
If you want quieter without really hurting flow look up Auger Style Muffler Insert. Ive been running these for years on turbo arctic cat snowmobile. I use stainless as it last longer. Makes big change in decibels without drastically hurting performance.
Ironhorse I been saying mcculloch had it rite with the baffle in the muffler. Remove the baffle and they breath better. I honestly think square killed them. Probably intentionally. Keep it circular and I believe you can beat the design. !!!! Love ya brother .!!!

I built one of your pipes for a poulan pro 42cc play saw. I haven’t put it on yet but within the next day or 2 I’m going to try it out.

I did a variation that may not make the power of an IH pipe, but it screams! Worked good on my 372, but on my 390... wow.

My 562 has a pipe just like that. Makes it sound like a much bigger saw than it really is.
I have a motorized bicycle, the engine came from a friends back yard, full of dirt, etc...but it was only the engine. I traded some work for it, brought it home, cleaned it up and made a list of parts needed. One of the parts needed was the exhaust pipe/muffler so I ordered one, installed it and rode the bike (after I had all the parts for the bike and installed of course) and it did good (as far as I knew) but it was quite loud so I thought I'd try and make one and researched how noise is reduced. I came up with my version of a turbo muffler from an scrap tall skinny camping propane tank. I cut the tank in half welded in a center plate.The inlet pipe went through the top and center and dumped in the bottom, second pipe from top of bottom chamber to top of upper chamber and outlet pipe went from bottom of upper chamber through the bottom of bottom chamber where it exited. The bike is now at least half as loud and goes twice as fast. Not sure how but it works and plan on making more.

If you're going to build an exhaust that is quiet, build the exhaust similar to a suppressors design. You'll have to figure out volumetric efficiency of the saw... not only for the Intake, but, the exhaust as well... a stock saw would be perfect for a baseline... just have to figure the known volumes for the intake charge/cylinder... and the same for the exhaust... knowing those you can convert it to percentages, ratios or whatever works best for you. I'm new to all of this, but, I have some "thing" in the works specifically dealing with Exhausts/muffle cans.
I built one of your exhausts for my dolmar 7910 and it rips! Quite a drastic difference in top end performance. It holds rpm really well, much better than stock. I wear muffs so noise is no problem
Sunday night I got to work and made one of those pipes finally. I got frustrated messing with the stock can on my ported Poulan 2150 build. It just wouldnt flow right and it was so choked up it was like i had the choke on when I would get it rockin in the wood. It was loading the can up with fuel it was so bad. That pipe made all the difference! It took it from being hardly any air moving from the exhaust to knocking an empty gatorade bottle over from 2 feet away!!! I made the pipe from memory and I ended up with a little more length past the exit pipe. It seems to work just right and it seems to have good pull. How crucial do you think that length is. The little saw is kicking arse for 34cc in a 16" spruce. Thanks for all of your guidance my friend, we all apreciate it.
2.5 - 3 inch tube exhaust ( I.D. Depends on engine size) at a 45degree angle out the can is gonna give ya the best combo of torque and fuel economy imho. I’ve built an Ironhorse pipe and they do broaden the torque curve in the cut for sure , maybe my dimensions weren’t exactly dead-nuts but it seemed to me the “piped out da can” “Bush King” muffler was a hair stronger. Anytime you flow air 90* (in this case exhaust) from the source there is restriction. Dyno Joe did a video comparing some different home made piped exhausts ... Your mileage may vary 😎
Id like to try harveys design and bring the tailpipe so to speak back tword the cylinder, make two that are a bit more than half the diameter. I think i would still have the scavenging and get more heat from the saw.... the concern would be the tailpipe/cyl distance. Im thinking the only way is to just try it out.

Does that long pipe need a support bracket at the end that could mount to those 2 open bolt holes? vibration may shake it loose and strip the muffler mount threads. Love your channel.
If you want quieter without really hurting flow look up Auger Style Muffler Insert. Ive been running these for years on turbo arctic cat snowmobile. I use stainless as it last longer. Makes big change in decibels without drastically hurting performance.
Ironhorse I been saying mcculloch had it rite with the baffle in the muffler. Remove the baffle and they breath better. I honestly think square killed them. Probably intentionally. Keep it circular and I believe you can beat the design. !!!! Love ya brother .!!!

Harv do you know what a super trap muffler is?use them on upside-down headers in drag boats maybe you can make a small version from washers and spacers
