  • OK so we are experimenting with format in this episode and have filmed this instructional video in vertical orientation. Because Shayne was showing the sails it made sense to film this way. So make sure you watch this video on your phone or tablet for best viewing results. And then let us know what you think!
We use our code 0 and mast head spinnaker for sailing downwind on our voyage from Valencia to Ibiza, Spain. If you are looking for tips on sail trim from a professional sailor then this may be a video you would be interested in watching. For those of you who have asked what our sail configuration looks like, hopefully this will give you some idea on downwind sails.

Very interesting thanks but you don’t talk about a boom vang ! Do you not have one ?

No boom vang on Paikea. It's a good suggestion for a later video 👍

I love your wind/speed instruments! Great colour coded setup. What gear is it?

Great video- thanks! I have 3 questions: 1) at 24:05 when the leach is fluttering is this amount of fluttering harmful to the sail over many hours? People talk about it being harmful to flap too much but I don’t know how much is too much; 2) Would it be desirable, if one could, to attach a barber hauler to pull the leach down more (akin to moving a genoa car forward), or would that not help significantly? 3) I have a regular traveller/track but some people seem to say the dual sheet mainsheet is great for control and built in partial preventer but you feel otherwise. Would love to understand more your thoughts on the pros/cons of each. Thanks!

The flutter in the leach is from us recutting and recycling the sail. It is not from trim. Yes it wears the leech out faster, the solution is the get Anna to recut the leach and take up on the Broad seems.
Yes, I use a roaming Barbour hauler a lot. On all the sails, it is a vital tool to trim all the foreward sails depending on the angles you sail.
The A style main sheet is hopeless for control, we just released part 1 about main sheets explaining why.
