  • Today I set up a massive 164TB home server using the robust Inter-Tech IPC 3U-30255 case. This build features 7 SAS drives and 5 SATA drives, tailored for optimal performance and reliability. I'll be using part of the server to host a storj node - and a few of the drives for personal projects. Whether you're into data hoarding, need extensive storage solutions, or are curious about Storj, this video is for you!

2:57 - These "HP" drives look like HGST Helioseal Ultrastar drives (owned by Western Digital, whose name is also on the lower part of the label).
This is also confirmed by the model number of e.g. the left drive (WUH721818...), which is completelty fitting the HGST Helioseal drives, except for the first letter, which is W instead of H. U = Ultrastar, H = Helioseal, 72 = 7200 rpm. 18 = raw capacity, 18 = available capacity...
I personally am a big fan of these drives. They are very reliable and by many datacenters used.

SATA is a subset of SAS and SAS has a SATA compatibility mode built into it as well. You could set your whole structure for SAS and use SATA where necessary and it would work just fine.

Nice build, think i would have maybe gone with a slightly bigger psu, 500w for all those drives is going to strain the 12v rail a bit. Btw sas cables can be used on sata drives.

Good setup. But, how much time needed to fill up 164TB with storj? I think, possibly never. There is was a huge data deletion at the last month. My node with 12TB space running 22 month and it's filled only at the 8TB for now. I have good internet connection and online up to 99%, good disk speed, but ingress is to low and periodical deletions is too big. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Or node location is no good.

Hi, I started off like you, using a single SAS to 4 SATA cables. But ever since I found this adaptor on the chinese taobao site, it was a superb option. Basically, this link im sharing with u is a 12 hdd cage that has a backplane (SAS/SATA), and the backplane, u can simply use a single miniSAS cable to SFF 8047 to ur LSI adaptor. And boom! 1 cable to 12 HDD which reduces the cable mess. There is also a 6 pin port, the seller will provide u with a 4x molex to a single 6 pin port to power all 12 hard drives. I have been using it for months and works like a charm. Will share the link with u if i can

I watched cause of that jazzy looking motherboard, as much as i like that case the money spent on that couldve been spent on a better motherboard, plenty of none server class pc cases that can house loads of Drives, Corsair Obsidian 900D/1000D, Phantek also make server sized cases, good job you dont have Graphic Card usage in mind for Video Editing or Gaming considering you only have 1x 550watt Power Supply, downside to that case only taking 1 PSU, FYI those PCI_E x1 slot SATA adapters come in 4 Port Versions as well, went down the windows route rather than Linux with Proxmox or Truenas kinda wonder what the use case is? and what about RAID? PS you can get x4 NVME PCI-E x16 Slot Cards pretty cheaply if you wanna use that other x16 slot as long as you can bificate the slot into x4x4x4x4 for each nvme drive on the card.
