- After 6 Months at WGU I'm one project away from completing the degree. In this video, I'll tell you how I managed to get an extra 30 days added onto my term to get the program finished, despite the term officially ending August 31.
Also, opinions on the 6 classes I finished since my last video and the 1 I have left to finish, including a couple significant shortcomings of the curriculum.

Sweet, this info was golden. I'm starting the C.S program in April, surprised to learn you can finish the degree in as little as six months. Though im sure you have a ton of experience under your belt. I am transferring with an associates in Math and Science, so I am expecting to finish rather quickly. Not six months quickly but I would be happy completing within a year and a half.

I got a Bachelors degree from WGU in Software development and had to go to a coding bootcamp to get a job.

I don’t know if you will see this, but I wanted to thank you for all your videos on what your experience was for finishing the degree in one term. Although I didn’t complete the entire degree in one term, I was able to complete it in two. This was the last thing I needed to start working in the tech industry after switching careers. @@VyLa549 yeah so I’m still at the same tech company here in Texas. Looking to get promoted within the next year which would give me about a 20%ish raise. Making about 100k in total compensation currently and am making well over double what I was making before I started wgu. 10/10 would do again if I had to start over again.

These videos were extremely helpful to know what to expect. I am going for the BSIT degree but decided to first knock out as many CompTIA certs before starting the program. I currently have my AAS degree but it has been so long that the IT credits didn't transfer. I have 81 credit hours to go, but if I knock out all 8 CompTIA certs before enrolling it should cuz that down a lot. Congratulations on finishing in 1 term, that's a lot better than I could do. Good luck! I know the IT program is heavy on the certs -If you haven't looking into it yet, you may want to compare the cost vs benefit of paying for all those certs yourself as opposed to letting WGU cover them with your tuition. I know they get pretty pricey. If you can knock enough out in one term, you may be able to get more for your money getting them through the school... ?
@@codeBueno I have been going back and forth with it. I have a full time job and a newborn as well and I just don't see me knocking it out quiet as fast as you. If I pass I probably could get my work to pay for them. This would leave about 13 courses for me to knock out. Just not sure which path to take. Which CompTIA certs did you have to take and would you say WGU'S material was good with it? Through my job I have access to CBT Nuggets and Lynda.com. thanks for replying!
I’m enrolling for the BSIT as well. I have my associates in information systems as well as the comptia a+ and security+. That cleared about 64% of my courses.

Exactly I’m living with my parents rn I’m saving so much money and they aren’t making me pay rent so I’m working a job so I can save up enough money for tuition it’s really cheap it’s steal cost thousands of dollars but it’s way cheaper than going to a 4 year college in person

I finished the Bachelors of business management in 2 months (101 CUs) but I had a strong grasp on business concepts before starting. I'm starting my bachelors in Computer Science soon and this gives me some hope that I can finish in 6 months.
Did you transfer any credits, and what do you do for work or experience that helped you finished in 2 months?

I just started this program with WGU January 2nd. Im trying to finish it by the end of the year.
Regarding the exams with poorly-worded or irrelevant questions - it seems like many of these online schools use third party platforms who share question/answer databases. The upside to this is that they are also readily available. One question I had which stands out was something like "What is the BEST solution to..." and the answer was "all of the above". I'm not sure how "the best" could be more than one thing.
Hey, love your video. You should be so proud of your work so far. I just had a question about the software quality assurance examination. Were you able to provide any input on your exam experience for future students. I'm taking precalc now with hopeful future enrollment into the program. I'm curious if any changes were made and if that information would be passed along to you. It's crazy the class instructors dont have contact with the exam. I literally just finished May 31st and got my capstone graded June 2nd. So glad I did it. Got it done in 4 months 61 credits.

You’re not the only one to ask for updates on his job search.
Go to a state school's online program. The CS program at WGU is high school re-education. Dev recruiters dont care about certs. They want in depth knowledge and skills in the field. You aren't going to get that WGU.
@@mariadelarosa3755 Nobody cares where you got your degree unless it's prestigious or it's from University of Phoenix. Any state school they will not care about, and the evidence for this is on Linkedin where pretty much any degree from any state is working at Big N companies, some don't even have degrees related to CS. Some learned their skills from boot camps, or from certifications. But you're right though, they care about knowledge and skills which can indeed be found anywhere, including WGU. But nice try with the gatekeeping.
BadMannerKorea I went back to my state school because it had pipeline programs to top companies in many industries. They directly recruited cs students from our program only. I also went back for the academic rigor. AI - Machine Learning encompasses linear algebra and calculus 3. WGU AI course teaches you intro stuff that they are teach high school kids now with cal 1 only. It was a better position for me to stay at my state school. UC Berkeley, University of Michigan, University of Washington and University of Texas are great state schools. Tech recruiters know they get quality from these students because they have been well prepared academically and professionally.
@@mariadelarosa3755 I don't deny that some programs lead to better success when it comes to hiring, but you are incorrect about gatekeeping CS degrees, or any IT degree from anywhere (unless like I said it is like University of Phoenix). As I said, you can get hired by big companies with a degree in something completely unrelated to tech and with bootcamp experience. You're free to check out Linkedin and search the name of schools, or creep employees who work at Microsoft/Apple/Amazon/Google/you name it and see their credentials.

I guess you would have to combine a BS degree with a bootcamp to get a full well rounded experience. I wish schools would do something like that.

I am really contemplating getting an IT degree from WGU. Kind of undecided between Network Security, Computer science or software development. I got my associates from a brick and mortar college in business but I want to do something more technical. Is the Computer science program really hard and math heavy. I am just worried it would be too hard.
I did 49 credit hours while managing a business and working the first time around. I lost a lot of hair and gained a lot of weight. So I feel your pain. I am thinking about going back for the software development degree - from business administration :C

My theory is if I take two terms at WGU, I can go through FreeCodeCamp and Udemy to learn the practical end of things simultaneously. Congrats on your degree, I assume you got it by now!

How long do you think it would take someone to complete the computer science degree if they do not work at all at the time that they attend the college? My parents are letting me stay with them for free until i am done with college the closest state college is 100 miles away from my area and i don't want massive debt so i thought this college might be a good option. I am about to finish community college with an associates in math which will get me all the general education credits and most of the math required for computer science.

Sorry if this has already been asked or spoken about but about how many hours did you put into learning/studying a day/week? Did you transfer credits in or work in the field prior?
Averaged more than 80hrs/week for the first 6 months. Transferred in 37 credits, from an old degree and 2 Straighterline courses I took a couple months before starting at wgu. I had run web based businesses on my own as a software user, but no real computer science or programming experience aside from dressing up a MySpace profile with basic html back in the day when that was a thing.
Is this more for someone who already has extensive knowledge of things in IT, or could someone with minimal knowledge be able to complete this program? From your opinion!

So how much time and money did this cost you in the end? I'm considering trying to do credit by examination, but this seems like it could also be a good option.
I've attended 5 separate colleges, some would accept CBEs, but only for the cores. I entered WGU with 168 credit hours under my belt (was 65% done with an EE degree), WGU only accepted 9 credits, but in two days time I completed 20 CUs, when it would have taken me almost 4 months to complete just 4 classes in person, and 4 CBEs. I think I will be able to complete the entire BSITSW in a single term. With the longest classes being the Applied Algebra and Capstone. (3-4 weeks each). So far, I don't think you can beat the Price per CU value at WGU for a Regionally Accredited University.
Well done, I was rooting for you to make it. I'm at 39 CU's completed for this semester (1st term) with 24 days left in the term, don't think I could have done 50 if I tried. Also how did you get the sweater? I filled out the referral to a friend, but never received a coupon or anything from WGU. Did your "friend" have to actually talk to an enrollment counselor or do anything?
Yeah they had to use the link in the referral email to join the WGU email list and then talk to an enrollment counselor on the phone when they called. I think the enrollment counselor tried to make an appointment to talk again, but I don't think they ever set a date or time for it.

Hey Dan, any recommendations on any resources for the Oracle SQL certification? Gone through the uCertify material however from what I heard people don't feel it's enough to pass.

F N somewhere in the course resources theres a link to a test simulator. Total Tester maybe? I think it's connected with a supplementary textbook available somewhere through WGU. But the test simulator is very similar to the actual exam. Practice with it a few times. You just have to know the material really well. It's a lot of questions for the time you have, and you usually have to know exact syntax.
@@codeBueno Yeah, I think that's the most worrying aspect especially if there's several "choose all the apply", I can see myself taking too much time reviewing the syntax for each answer.

Overall do you recommend it for someone starting out their career in IT or someone that has just passed their CCNA?
I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a degree in computer science or IT honestly (or if you want that pile of certifications you'd get in the IT curriculum). I would not recommend a traditional college to anyone. If for no other reason, simply because cost of traditional college is too far disconnected from the value of a degree.
The full 6 months per term is huge benefit in itself vs the normal 15 weeks or whatever you'd get for a term in a normal school. Even if you're learning at a typical college pace, you can fit almost two full traditional semesters into each WGU term - at a far more reasonable price. If you can accelerate enough in the IT program, you can get the cost of all those certifications down significantly too.
If the degree and certifications don't matter to you, and you're self-motivated to learn all you need to learn and build yourself a portfolio for employment purposes, skip college altogether. There's no information you can learn in any college course that's not available for free right here on youtube.
Operating Systems for programmers was one of my most difficult courses. It took me 2 attempts to pass it. I almost passed the first time but missed it by a handful of questions. I relied on videos and notes and didn’t really read the text.

Bottom line on this whole program, How have prospective employers viewed your degree? Many IT interviews include significant skills testing. Have you experienced these type of skill tests? If so, what was the outcome? Did you actually learn something useful in this program. Are you working in the computer science field now?
Will make a video on this soon. Short version: You'll learn what you need for an entry level position. Definitely a useful program, but could certainly be improved. I'm taking the education further now in a program on deep learning. I've been running my own computer science related businesses for several years, and never intended to go looking for an employment situation right away. I may do that in the future, but I'll be spending the next year (at least) developing further skills and building more things for myself.
@@codeBueno You have some background. I wonder how this would be for a newbie, like a person straight out of high school with only routine computer exposure.
@@pauleveritt3388 Obviously can only speak to my own experience. I had minor exposure to programming concepts and very basic knowledge of html prior to starting this. I was an adept user of software, but not a developer. WGU does leave you with some knowledge gaps - there's no class where you're creating a fully functional modern web app from scratch for example, like I mentioned in the video. But it does cover fundamentals.

Paul, I believe WGU is set up for people who have some college credits. Someone right out of high school may want to go to their local community college first. Completing an associates degree would be even better. I have not started yet but I have gone through most of the enrollment process and this is my understanding.

Much more than full time hours studying, and self-employed with variable, mostly part time hours.

Do you feel you learned enough to be successful as a programmer? How much did you know about programming prior to this degree?
I learned enough to get started as a professional programmer. I could confidently apply for and accept a programming job if that was what I wanted to do - in pretty much any field. And I can confidently figure out how to create what I want to create.
You get a broad overview at WGU, learning the fundamentals of lots of different fields and several programming languages. You'll build some functional applications and learn the theory behind things that you wouldn't get in a coding bootcamp or most online courses.
Like any college course though - you'll get as much out of it as the effort you put into it.

when I heard your credit amount I was a little surprised. My B.S. requires 120 credits and I estimate due to my prior associate degrees I will finish with 165 credits. Maybe it's just different in how my university is structured but 79 units seems more like an associate's degree level.
The BS is 120 credits. My prior bachelor's degree and coursework I did before starting WGU satisfied 37 credits. And the capstone project is an additional 4 credits beyond the 79 that were finished when I made this video.

Hey codeBueno, great info series on WGU. I’m considering the CS program as well... did you have to take any of the math classes? If so, how difficult did you find them?
I'm starting the CS program in February, they require Calculus one, Discreet Math 1 and 2, and Statistics. If you have taken any of those classes in the last 5 years at a community college or university you can transfer those credits in and skip those classes. I was able to transfer my Calculus credits to them.
I haven't taken none of those math classes before in my life lol. I'll learn as much as I can.

Please somebody answer if I complete my bachelor's degree from WGU do you think I'll get accepted for a masters or MBA at another reputed university? Like State University
I suspect it might put you at a disadvantage for a program with a competitive application process, because you won’t have a GPA to report. That’s not to say it can’t be overcome by an impressive portfolio of well-developed projects. But it will be largely up to you to put that together, and to pitch your expertise to the admissions board in the absence of the traditional GPA those schools likely rely on to gauge your qualifications vs your peers.
And of course if the program you’re going for requires a standardized test like the GRE, or the GMAT for an MBA, a sufficiently high score on those exams can go a long way in your favor.
