    WGU is where its at. Since at WGU, Ive obtained 5 certifications and then obtained an internship that lead me to a job paying $65,000 to start well before graduation. Ive accomplished all that and Im nowhere near graduation yet. Im in the Cybersecurity & Information Assurance program there. Best investment in my life.

      Hey Ryan I'm set to start for the same program on June 1st, so about three weeks from now. I have a good bit of IT experience, I have my CompTIA Sec+ cert, all from my 3 years in working in more or less a help desk position as an Active duty airman in the US Air Force. I would really like to touch base with you so I can kind of get a general understanding of what I should expect and what your experiences have been with WGU in general and more specifically Cybersecurity & Information Assurance program.

    They are very friendly and helpful in the beginning because they want to keep you enrolling and take your money. As you get close to graduating, they become harder to deal with and are always finding ways to keep your from graduating. They also don't like to give you credit for classes you take else where and there is a lot of redundancy. While most colleges have redundancy, WGU is over the top with it. My son enrolled with WGU because he thought he could save money and time by not having to travel to a physical college an hour away. He also thought he could travel at his own pace and finish the courses sooner and graduate sooner. It's not like that at WGU, where most of their grading is highly unverifiable and usually based on one graders opinion---even their math courses. In order to pass a course, you have to make an A. The graders will nick and pick your work to death until you are ready to scream. And sometimes, they'll tell you one thing is wrong, so you do it as they wanted and then they'll reverse themselves. This is to slow you down. The longer it takes you to get through the courses, the more money they make. It says non-profit, but trust me, it's all about the profits. What would have taken my son only two years at an actual physical college, has taken him over 3 years at WGU and they still have stalled him again. He should graduate this fall, but nah. He already had a 2 year degree somewhere else. And now he has used up all his grants and loans. He had to borrow money from a relative for this last semester. And now they have fixed it again so he can't graduate and it don't look like they are going to return his money this semester---even though it is early on. So what is he to do? Save up for a year and attend an actual real local college and attend for another year---just to graduate. I feel bad because I'm the one who talked him into doing enrolling in WGU. My advice now---don't do it and if you are in the beginning semesters, go somewhere else.

    • @codeBueno

      Hard to say without knowing you and your situation. You won't pass the exams without knowing the information, if that's your concern. But no one is going to make you sit in a room while they teach it to you either. They give you the resources, and make subject matter experts available for you if you get stuck on something specific. But it's basically 100% on you to learn everything and demonstrate competence. It's also completely up to you how much time is wasted. If you already know a subject, you don't have to spend any time in the course at all. Just take the exam and move on to the next course. If you don't know the subject, you can go through it as quickly or as slowly as you want. All up to you how much time you put into it. And you take the exam when you're ready to take it. In that regard, it's far less a waste of time than a traditional university.

    • @windmuser
      @windmuser 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't enroll. You'll be wasting your money and time. Go to a physical college.

      @@windmuser Don't agree, I was at Arizona State University enrolled in the computer science and engineering and transferred after my freshman year because classes that would've taken me a week to learn and demonstrate competence in, were put into a 15 week semester and wasted A LOT of my time as I was forced to show up to every lecture in order to earn a passing grade. However if you need a teacher to walk you through lessons, and can't learn by yourself effectively, then yea that's the only plus to a physical university

      It'd be a good idea to spend some time gaining some familiarity with the subject matter before you start working on a degree in the field. Learn enough before you start to know whether it's really a field you want to go into -- and enough to know for sure that you'll be able to learn the material from books and online resources. They do start with the basics, but it's entirely on each student to learn it all for themselves. There's no reason to wait until you formally start school to start learning.

    I've been listening to stories like this for a year now. I'm currently enrolled at my Tech College for cyber-security but want to do WGU. I have an associates in programming and it did nothing for me.
    I took C++ at my Technical College and it was my favorite language.
    How difficult is it for experienced programming student?
    Background: java, C#, C++, PHP, Javascript, HTML5, Android Studio, Oracle 11g, Visual Basic, jQuery.

    • @codeBueno

      Doug0101 The difficulty level is on par with a typical accredited college. You get a pile of certifications in the cybersecurity degree program specifically (all included in the cost of tuition). You take the certification exams as the exams to pass those courses. So the difficulty of those courses is exactly the difficulty of getting the certs
      The difference between WGU and a traditional school is the pacing flexibility afforded by the competency based approach. To the extent that your prior experience has already taught you any given topic, you don't have to waste time on assignments meant to teach you that topic. Same if you just happen to pick things up quickly or want to put in a crazy amount of hours every day.
      You're not locked into anyone else's timeline for the classes. So you finish courses as quickly as you can fully understand the material covered. And since the tuition is charged at a flat rate per 6 month term, you can get a lot done at a much more reasonable cost than I've seen in any traditional school.
      Here's the link to info about it:

      I read and took notes on everything, but I only did challenge problems until I felt like I understood the idea behind the lesson well enough. Looking at the numbers in zybooks, it looks like I did about 90% of the participation activities and about 75% of the challenge problems. I also did the Lynda stuff they point to at the end of the chapters. Honestly, though, it's just a lot of material and it took some hours to work through it all.

      WGU is regionally accredited by the NWCCU - same accrediting body as University of Washington, University of Oregon and dozens of other well respected brick and mortor universities. People do talk about it not being ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) accredited. Some people think that matters. Can't speak to it personally.
      Google tells me it's not very important for a CS degree. And it looks like ABET only developed criteria for Cybersecurity bachelor programs in November 2018, and achieving their accreditation takes 18 months, so there may not be any ABET accredited Cybersecurity Bachelor programs anywhere yet.

    • @codeBueno
      @codeBueno  5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Honestly, as someone with a bachelor's degree from a normal brick and mortar university and a law degree from LSU, I'd argue traditional universities are the cash grab -- there are not many costs in the US economy inflating as quickly as the cost of going to college.
      Premise of WGU is that there's a large segment of the population that either A) has experience in a field and doesn't need to baby step their way through a university to be able to demonstrate the same level of subject matter expertise as a Bachelor or Master's level graduate, or
      B) is perfectly capable of learning and attaining that same degree of knowledge faster than the pace dictated by a traditional university.
      According to their surveys of companies hiring WGU graduates, the employers seem to agree that the students have the level of proficiency they expect. The accrediting bodies obviously agree, as the school is not only regionally accredited as a university (by the same accrediting body for University of Oregon, among a swath of other northwestern schools), but also for teacher preparedness education, recognized in all 50 states, and nursing education, recognized in all 50 states, among other accreditation..
      The argument that it sounds like a cash grab is hard to sustain, given that they're nonprofit and the cost to students are a tiny fraction of that charged by almost any other accredited university. And the increase in tuition over time is a tiny fraction of the increases being implemented by basically all other schools in the country.

      Its awesome. If I have job experience or certifications that can cover a class. Why sit there and be forced to take it if you already know the subject? I'm not forced to sit in a class or have to take a bunch of useless electives that end up costing you more money.
      I love that its all online and somewhat "self paced". I have a full time job plus a family to take care of so I can work on it whenever I have spare time. I don't have to stress making it to a sit in class.
      Its also very affordable. I applied for a similar degree path at University of Phoenix and it was 54k compared to 24k that wgu is charging.
