As someone who actually grew up in a cult, this film came the closest to any 'cult' horror film in actually capturing the essence of what it was like. Don't get me wrong. Obviously, as with most fictional depictions of cults, it's extremely exaggerated. Most cults aren't horrendously violent or secretly involved with summoning demons. This just captured a lot of the right ideas through that fictional depiction, especially in the way seemingly 'good' social mores like loyalty and selflessness can be used to manipulate and guilt people. The 'openness' part of their ideology especially hit home. Having everyone's dirty laundry at hand in the name of transparency is a very common control tactic used by cult leaders.

Honestly if you want to see similarities to common cults you probably shouldn't be watching horror movies. The features are more accurately captured in dramas, thrillers and documentaries which actually put effort into portraying a realistic situation while reminding how frightening this may be from the outside

@@Jayariee Oh most definitely, although I appreciate some horror cult movies because some of them explore themes or ideas about cults in interesting ways, even if they don't portray the literal reality that closely. Something about horror as a genre does a good job at conveying the feeling of it. That said, there's a lot of nonsense in horror cult movies that gives some people the wrong idea of what they're like too.

Yes!!!! I was thinking the same thing too! I thought it was the same director. Just watched the movie on Netflix. Also another fil, by the editor The Invitation called Coherence.
The movie felt incomplete to me. I felt like the movie was just starting when her friend came to the apartment and then it ended 5 minutes later.
Facts I wish the friend didn’t just die like that.
Honestly the messed up thing is that they literally used the friend just to give her that final umph so she'd find strength to fight again, and then they were like "So... you've served your purpose. 🤷"
But also, yeah, would've been nice to see her spend more time getting in depth on a struggle of putting her friend through the same agony, her friend never having been concerned enough to look for her, and Sarah seeing in Lisa the same fight they drained from her (with all the mental conflict that would resurface). They missed opportunities with the friend, I feel.
This is why I don’t talk to my apartment neighbors lol the most I’ve ever said was “hi” in response to someone greeting me.
I’ve lived in some pretty sketchy buildings and even now that I’m in a nice one I still don’t trust nobody lol

@Lightingale X Nightingal First of all, I don't have a cat. Second of all, after the first night of sleeping in that apartment, I would have left. She had the opportunity to leave because she was able to go to her job still. She could've called the moving furniture company and told them to ship her stuff to a Uhaul until she finds another apartment.

Why? Because I absolutely hate the notion of someone not letting me be independent. I hate it so much. I didn’t think this movie would have an impact on me, but it did. It’s my worst nightmare and it’s so cleverly done.
If you think about it. Life is the same way. We all live in a box we never step outside of. It's just that in this movie it is a smaller box

The scene that made me cry was when she told her father to leave when he came to visit her.

Space cowgirl I get what you mean in that sense then. Usually when someone has the loss of one sense, their other senses strengthen. But yes that’s how it works in horror and thriller movies, if the characters had common sense there would be nowhere for the plot to go.

Watching this just makes me wonder. If you find yourself in a cult, and straight up murder them all to escape, is that something you can be prosecuted for?... Asking for a friend.

The actress who plays Pepper on AHS is in this movie. So good!
This film was sinister. And all about narcissistic people who controls and manipulates the vulnerable. This is type of narcissism reminds me of Pharaoh. And that symbol is the mark of the beast.

Just listening to the LME has lit my anxiety. So glad I didn't come across and watch this on my own. Sounds like an excellent movie and concept, but it's a definitely no for me.
It's like a psychological thriller
l had no idea it was torture porn and it freaked my out so badly. l fast forwarded from when the torture started (l think l would have been MORE freaked if l hadn't seen what happened - not all, but generally)but it was still way too much. l'm going to scrutinize comments much closer in future. Just saw this upload when I was going to lay down and relax and had to watch. If you enjoy psychological thrillers. It’s a really good watch! Definitely a refreshing movie in regards to “new” movies just feeling like regurgitated concepts.
This film surprised me. I really enjoyed it. You think it’s going one way and then ends up something else
this movie was absolutely wild. Watched this at 3 AM and was one of the most twisted, disturbing movies I have seen in a long time... One thing I am trying to figure out still, is who was watching the main character, and cult dude in the camera room?
There was always two people assigned to that surveillance room. They took shifts.

my only complaint is that the performance from the lead woman could've been much stronger. Like I constantly felt like she was holding back. For instance, the scene where she was nailed to the wall, I feel like her pain reaction should have / could have been much stronger and her emotions all seem watered down throughout the film. other than that I thought it was great.

This movie reminds me of a chapter from a manga called Screaming Lessons where the protagonist and her mom move into an apartment complex full of friendly neighbors who help each other with everything, but once the MC realizes no one leaves their apartment for anything, she starts to get freaked out and wants to leave

I’d love you to check out “The stand off at sparrow creek” it’s on Hulu. Starts out as one of the best films I’ve ever seen, then slowly deteriorates into absolute nonsense. The ending is laughable. Fascinating watch.

This was really good and very terrifying! I love AHS, but they failed to really capture cults, unlike this film, which really gets into the brainwashing of it all. You will find yourself really rooting for her in the end for those of you reading my comment who haven’t seen it.

So... I watched this LME when it came out but for some reason decided not to check out this movie... Until now.
Let me just say that this movie had me hooked from the get go and I *did not* expect it to be so good! It did a great job of being eerie/creepy without going over the top. Definitely a film that I would re-watch 👌🏾.
Great movie but if no one had a job how did they keep the lights on and eat? That was the one plothole to me. The ending was straight up "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers"!

It may have structural weakness but it works on so many levels , not the least of which is the lead actresses ability to cause us to love her . The Academy Awards have become a shit show for whatever the brainless elite want to shove down our throats. But it used to mean something. She deserves recognition because she carries this film and elevates it . Even in granny pajamas she oozes a strong sexuality that seems to contradict her characters intentional weakness . I sincerely hope she prospers . Great movie 😃

The ending of this film seems too similar to the ending of The Invitation , which is a great film dealing with similar themes.
Saw some similarities between this movie and "The Invitation". I liked The Invitation more but 1br isn't too far off especially with the limited resources they had.

Up until the point where the character goes in to apply for new home, people chattering, home owner talking to her, I was like myself oh been there, done that and the next few moments into the movie with what unfolded I was like that's not normal, wtf. I wish her Dad knew what was going on -movie would have taken another turn. Overall, it leaves you pondering at the end. ha ha. Enjoyed it while it lasted the entire 1 and half hour.
