      I just watched it, I noticed they didn't use any CGI on the monsters. Beautiful. So many horror movies CGI ghost and monsters, it just doesn't work. I guess there wasn't much they could do with the evil dimension though with their budget, it still looked good though.

    I think it's safe to say that the reality warping effects of the void only extend around the hospital for a certain distance, possibly the whole town. When Carter is on the road, he communicates via the radio to police dispatch, but once at the hospital all communications are cut off. Even the am/fm radio wasn't picking up anything. So the Doc has a separate reality/dimension that he linked to the hospital and the farmhouse, which probably creates a distortion field around where those are linked to. When the triangle portal in the wall closed, that dimension collapsed and took the distortion along with it, hence why at the very start and end, Carter's cruiser is near the hospital doors, but when they went out to get supplies from it, it was further away as they were in that reality distortion.

    I'm glad it's not getting a sequel. Cosmic horror excels when things aren't explained fully. It thrives on the possibilities and limits of our imagination... The "what if's". Plus if u give any cosmic horror entity an identity and a sense of tangibility, it loses the fundamental element that makes it so horrifying.

      I think it's possible to make sequels or prequels or maybe spin offs. The trick is to either not answer any questions or answer questions that eventually leads to more questions. Like cutting off a hydras head. Itll make people understand more but still feel like they're in the dark.

    • @themarty2769
      @themarty2769 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      IMHO the movie desperately needs a sequel. I aggree about keeping most/all about the cosmic horrors ambiguous, but the story of the main protagonist and his love interest is literally left unfinished, thus the movie has no ending at all. In a sequel/spin-off I want to either see their story being concluded while leaving the Void still as mysterious as possible or the Void itself being explored lightly, but *just* enought to give us a somewhat-adequate guess as to what happens to them.

I just don't get how this is so underrated and how it was so under my radar. Just to add to the theory that Powell's shenanigans have affected the entire town/world:
    When Carter picks up James, he specifically tells dispatch to call ahead to the hospital. Primarily to give Allison a chance to prepare for an encounter with her estranged husband, but also so they can prepare a gurney for James. Yet, when he arrives, the hospital staff was completely unaware of the situation, and they said no one called ahead...
    Guess it could have just been his radio, which was permanently static after reality started to get warped.

    • @kammorris5902
      @kammorris5902 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You know, you have a point there Robb. So are you suggesting the dispatch could have colluded with Dr. Powell? You know Robb, one thing The Void never tells us is how many of the town's residents are a part of this cult and how long has the cult been in existence in the town. Even the doctor doesn't give us any backstory on that or how many people have fallen under his influence.

    A: still trying to convince him or
    B: he didnt realize that his objective was just as Ironically Futile as "natures futility"

      No he would have made a movie that made sense this mivie tries to be unique by taking the fundamentals of lovecraft horror of the unknown but fails on 2 points first is that the unknown is givin such little info on its not interesting and not horrific....its power is never even pushed past making weak ass monsters and possibly shifting reality slightly....second are the auful characters everyone acts stupid incompetant impulsive and overall unlikeable. They make soooo many odd choices and dont take simple problem solving into account such as the car the guns and the fact that the cultist only have knives...im so confused why people like this movie i am left frustrated by the characters and lame attempts at creating cosmic horror....only redeaming factor are the great effects but those are few and far between

      Hey, jake. Make a film yourself, do it better. I have literally read everything Lovecraft ever wrote, and his characters gripped with terror tend to make really dumb decisions that they regret later or someone chastises after they die. They are terrified, not thinking clearly and pay for it. It's so common that in one of his essays and a number of correspondonce Lovecraft actually considers this to be a running joke of sorts. If you are going to discuss Lovecraft, his themes, and his influence here, you damn well better know what the fuck you are on about, lowercase jake.

    Honestly, I wish that in movies like this that someone or something just approaches the psycho cult leader after his big transformation, and asks, "now what?" Just asks him what he/she intends to do now, or even more so, if this is truly everything that they had expected and wanted. because, there are still a lot of issues with this whole plan brought before us.
    1: Powel can now exist forever, but is the creature he's become really something that he wants to exist as? What does he feel now in this new body? Can he feel? Won't he get bored eventually with his eternal life, since there's not much to do in this new dimension?
    2: Is it really worth living forever if this is the reality that he has to live in? The dimension that he got his powers from is not very pleasing to look at. It's grey, dismal, and kinda gross, with God knows what running around. There's no color, no light, nothing but barren, hostile landscape forever. What would be the point in living forever if this was all you had to look forward to till the end of time, and beyond?
    3: He didn't really resurrect his daughter. No matter what he wants to say, the thing he brought back doesn't look like her, sound like her, or act like her. he essentially just made a brand new creature. Even if it is her soul trapped in that thing, that just makes it worse, and even more pointless. Why resurrect her, if she isn't even the same girl he lost? He'll never see her real face again, hear her real voice, or do any of the things that she enjoyed ever again. It all just seems like a waste of time.
    So pretty much, him becoming this thing, doesn't seem like it was worth it to me. It looks like he probably should have read the fine print before signing himself over to these dark forces.

      You should watch the Entity story arc of the webseries Atop the Fourth Wall. The protagonist, Linkara, is facing against an Entity that wants to absorb all living beings into its being, so everything and all of reality can be it. But Linkara sends it down an existential spiral resulting in it committing suicide, by simply asking "And then what are you gonna do? When everything is a part of you what are you going to do next? What is your purpose when your purpose has been fulfilled?"

      Sorry that one year late, but look at it this way...
      As you can see "the thing" influences minds to do its biddings. What if.. Richard was still being manipulated by the thing thinking everything is okey, making him believe the child is a child! Making him see "unreal" reality, and while hes under "its" command, he can summon more of these creatures, take over and eventually, maybe even summon IT! I think this movie have heavy Cthulhu references, when hes trying to command weaker souls while beeing in The Void and thus making them summon him to make him stronger, giving sacrifices to bring its things in our world.. I dont know, but thats just my tought!

      Sorry for being 2 yrs late but I wouldn't doubt him seei.g that thing as her daughter since s father's love for her daughter is EMENCE N HUGE unconditional love for her something that most likely you haven't experienced which makes it impossible for you to understand (not hating) and also him being a monster himself and his way of thinking his mind all corrupted manipulated and just plain messed up.
      This about him loving his daughter even after becoming that thing with him being a monster himself wouldn't make it hard for him to look at her and her little girl. I mean s baby girl to his dad will always be her baby girl. I wouldn't wrap my head around it so much and go crazy trying to think about all these things when it's already messed up anyways and the answers you looking for basically answer themselves.
      He's some sort of demon already on the Darkside he doesn't care about anything he just knows he has his baby girl again forever and being a demon he won't mind being in hell since he will fit right in .
      No joke.
      The questions speak for themselves if you know about demonology actually doesn't take much to understand but still.
      Well yeah this is what I'm saying long story short.

      @@alexbaum2204 If you mean Nyar, it's cause he's one of the very few "Elder evils" in Lovecraft that actually enjoys directly messing with Humanity - rather than in the mostly distant / hands-off way seen by the others. He's also known to create and use many Avatars, and is said to use "1000 Masks" (meaning forms / ways of appearing) to emphasize that point. In the Persona game series, Nyarlathotep takes the place as the Ultimate Evil / Master Villain of the entire series, though he was temporarily defeated and banished back to the depths of the Collective Unconscious realm he typically resides in, back in Persona-2. He retains all of his Lovecraftian wickedness though, and his use of the 1000 faceless masks (forms). // The Pharaoh that Mattias mentions is, I think another one of those Forms that he uses (at least in Lovecraft books themselves). He basically just really, really, powerful / evil / fearsome - and as a Villain, that makes him awesome :-)

    Loved this movie, its absolutely fantastic. Personally I never thought that Powell himself was quite as in control as you described here - I understood it in such a way that the void had used his desires as a medium for its own intentions. From the moment on that he had grasped the void, he himself had ceased to be. Not that that matters when it comes to the films enjoyment in any way of course. ^^

But as it stands this seems like their own creation and where lovecraft is 50/50 on the known and the unknown, this movie is more like 20/80. Sometimes knowing too little or being left to think on the story yourself too much can ruin the experience. I don't want to do their lore for them.

    Here is some info about the end for those who didn't get most of it.
    The Void is by default one of the parallel Dimensions of the Earth with a different timeline, the self claimed God in the end was teleported to another location, since he serves a darker entity that is older than the Universe itself. The concept is about something that is older than everything else, far beyond God, immortality, Aliens and superior interdimensional Beings. And that Being is sitting in the top the Black Pyramid you saw at the End. What will happen?? well that Thing will devour Planet Earth, all the Humans and our Dimension.
    Why and how did Allison and Carter survive?? They actually did die in the Void, both, but they were reborn in the Void Dimension still in a human Vessel?? Why?? I think Powell wants them to be part of the major event and witness the superior Entity take over the Earth.

    What if this entire ritual was made to revive or call upon a great one from lovecraftian mythos? Perhaps like chtulu or nyarlhotep. It kinda reminds me of bloodborne, where mortals tried to abuse the blood and power of the old ones, some deciding to use their blood, and some deciding to gain knowledge and insight to transcend

      "Tusk" ... what in the hell do you say about it? Kevin Smith! Certainly didn't leave you in a party mood, especially that very last scene. Michal Parks and Justin Long were terrific. Does anyone remember a movie in the early 70's called "Ssssss" with Strother Martin? Martin was a scientist trying to find a serum to turn humans into snakes? Why snakes, I do not know. He must have been a herpetologist. It is very reminiscent of that. Had the same icky feel.

      @zethraelofteldrassil3149 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I'm jumping in also with my opinion ... I absolutely hated it. And, unfortunately, I hate it even more after this scene by scene dissection. The storyline is way too vague to be able to piece together all the in's and out's, and how's, and why's of the Dr.'s life after death theory = a better life after death, when we can obviously see that's not the case. And, where was the concept of "the void" derived from? How did the Dr. discover it? From the one page with a triangle found in a book in his desk? Who were his white-sheeted followers? The connection between characters is never fully explained. I thought it looked cheaply made, acting was atrocious, the pivotal scenes in the basement were so dark that I wondered what in the hell was everyone fighting. I am tired of hearing it being compared to "The Thing" (yeah right ... it had tentacles!), "Hellraiser", and "Lovecraftian". The end scene of the policeman and the Dr. together falling into the triangle proved what? Where did the Dr. go? It shows only the husband and wife hand-in-hand in a blatant, no apology full on steal from Fulci's "The Beyond".

    Excelent review for an excelent film. I only would like to point out that the name Carter might also be a nice reference or tribute to Randolph Carter, the dreamer and main character of lovecraft's oniric saga The Dream-quest of Unknown Kadath. Also the Void dimension resembles the available descriptions for The Plateau of Leng, a cold arid land where different dimensions converge and inhabitated by prehistoric semi-human horrors. Finally, the floating pyramid and other buildings of The Void follow lovecraftian concepts for alien architecture, wich is also a remarcable detail of the movie. Good job and thank you!

I want to thank you personally for that. Not only for that but also for the movies I normally couldn't handle due to PTSD triggers etc that I get to appreciate the story telling and cinematography of without being triggered into a full fledged episode. As a high risk patient pretty much stuck inside due to the pandemic I really want to say thank you for having a massive backlog of videos for me to watch and enjoy as I'm trapped inside.
