Fantastic job. When I was 11, and first learning to play guitar, I sat in SO MANY circle like this one with the 'old-timers', who were patient and didn't mind if I missed a note... great times.. great video .. Great music!
I would like to dedicate this song to my Great Aunt who will be layed to rest this afternoon. She loved this type of music and this song reminds me of the many afternoons spent with her at the seniors home when the local old time band would come play for the residents. Rest In Peace.
How is this music both energizing and calming at the same time? It's so nice, even all these years later. I wish I knew how to play one of these instruments.
I just wish you could have heard my father Howard play the mandolin before he had his stroke.h He loved playing with Johnny and the gang. Miss him greatly! Passed away January 2, 2014.
Like many others thats the first song I learned to pick. Things like this are one of the best things about TH-cam. Music shared is never lost and brings joy forever. The world we live in today would be a much better place if Johnny's Garage were a national chain. Thanks for sharing
As a boy, with my Mother playing guitar, I played this iconic Carter Family tune countless times. I played it exactly like Howard does. I learned it from My Aunt Lena who played it on a beautiful old Gibson F-4 mandolin. Her brother, Uncle Harmon, bought it for her sometime in the late 1930's or early 1940's. I played a Gibson A model mandolin that my parents bought for me from The Hank Snow Music Shop in Nashville. We played and sang old songs like The Knoxville Girl, Flo Ella, The Orphan Girl, Silver Bells, Lula Walls, May I Sleep In Your Barn Tonight Mister?, Engine 143 and many others. I learned a waltz called Hawaiian Love from my Daddy. I've never heard anyone else play it but, me and him. Nothing fancy, just great old ageless tunes that were passed down from one generation to the next. That was over 60 years ago. This video took me back there again! Thanks so much for posting it!!
Thank you, Olligator, many thanks for sharing your musical family story with us. Howard was a great musician. I miss him every Friday night when they used to play those unforgettable songs.
Hay not bad 4 .dem old timers. I knew an old one legged English guy .he did this all by himself it sounded exactly like this. I wonder how he did it 🤔.
Jim, the oldest is my cousin Howard, playing the mandolin. He will be 89 in December. He is an inspiration.

Beautiful music to be treasured especially when it’s family playing
Thank you Trudy, it is treasured!
A very nice rendition of one of the greatest tunes of all time. Don't think I've heard it on mandolin before, but I'm glad I did.
Written about 30 miles from here.
Used to party on A.P.'s grave at Mt Vernon UMC in Hiltons...
We was young and dumb
Still sounding good in 2020!

Haven't had any comments from Ansalems for a long time, i hope everything is alright with gene and the gang at the garage.
Anybody know where they are from? Kinda figured Wv or Ky Tn ? Good Stuff
Thanks Jim, We are from Chickamauga Georgia.
Performance was great, better yet if the cameraman was a bit more cautious on the swinging. Still was good anyhow.
Good quality playing but poor quality video. Person doing the video recording moves and shakes too much. Something it is out of focus.
