      @@loislane4583 Did you tip the mower over when you were working on it? If so, that can sometimes cause it to smoke on startup but it will go away in a few minutes. But it is also possible you bent or broke something internally when the flywheel key was damaged. That is worse case obviously.

    • @loislane4583
      @loislane4583 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@theeddies It was never tipped over or turned on its side. I had a brick under it to keep the blade from turning when I was working on it. It is possible when I ran over that root in my yard it bent the blade and bent the rod holding the blade. Ive had this thing since 2005 and shes been a good girl all these years. It might be time to put her out to pasture if tomorrow with new oil it still smokes.. Its a white smoke btw.

      Thanks. Bailing wire or zip ties. Drill a hole in the chute and there is usually a ledge or notch under the cover that can be used to cinch it up. I have thought about better more complicated ways but this one is simple and works.

    My lawnmower starts ok but sometimes after we stop to empty the mower bag it doesn't start until it cools down and sometimes the motor will hesitate like a gasp of air if it hits or bumps into an object but does still stays running. Could it still be the key that might not completely gone or the shaft is gunked up enough that won't start once it's hot due to the gunk being soft and by cooling down the shaft will grip again? Does that make sense? Thanks for any opinion you might have!

    • @theeddies
      @theeddies  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello, it is not likely the key but it could be a failing coil. The key is very easy to check by taking the top cover off and looking at the flywheel, it will be obvious if it is broken or askew. Measuring a coil is difficult without the right tools but is easy enough to just swap a new one. But, I would start with the suggestions on the following page, they lay out the common causes better than I can in a comment. Most just involve cleaning of various parts or general tune up stuff.

    • @theeddies

      Unfortunately I have seen them all different sizes. The one on this machine was 15/16" or apx 24mm. But I believe I have seen them in 3/4" and 7/8" as well. And some newer ones could be metric. Thanks, Eddie

    • @theeddies
      @theeddies  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello, if you do not have access to an impact gun (air or electric) you will need to hold the flywheel somehow or stuff the cylinder with rope to keep it from turning. Briggs makes a tool to hold the flywheel or you can use a strap wrench but you will likely have to remove the coil for the latter. DO NOT try to hold the flywheel with a screwdriver through the fins, they will break. The rope trick is not hard but if you have overhead valves you have to know that the engine is on the compression stroke. You can find out how to do it by searching "rope trick to remove flywheel bolt". There are other methods you will find online but I would not do them. Impact gun is really the way to go, even a small one will likely work. Buy, borrow, or steal:-)

    Thank you for the video! It has been extremely helpful, and now I, at least, believe I understand what the issue is, with my mower. I've been mowing my 1 acre property with a push mower, ever since I moved in. Some sections, along the outskirts, had gotten quite long, and this past time, I ultimately ended up hitting a rock that wasnt visible at the time. Now my mower won't start.😑 I wish I knew someone who was able to help me fix it, but I haven't lived in the area very long, and I'm all on my own. Taking appliances apart is definitely not one of my areas of expertise, and I'm afraid I might cause even more damage if I try to do it myself!😢 If there's anyone who lives in southeast Texas who might be able to help me, please let me know! I am obviously willing to compensate anyone who can get it working again! The mower itself if only a little over a year old, so it should be in pretty good shape, aside from this issue!
