Loved seeing the video. Brought back lots of memories of holidays in Ffestiniog and Tan y Grisiau as a lad. Mother's great great uncle (b 1856 near Tan y Grisiau) worked at Cwmorthin around 1875. It was known as the widow maker as so many perished there extracting the slate. He didn't stay long and worked on the railway surviving till the 1950s. I actually went with my parents to his house in T y G in 1950 when I was 3.He spoke only a few words of English and it was the first time I heard Welsh spoken.
The Chapel at Cwmorthin was in use until the 1960s but has decayed badly since losing its roof around 1980. The house that you photographed I was told was the home of the mine manager who lived there with his family and servants. Imagine getting coal brought up for the fires. Must have come up on the tramway.
The hole you looked in to see if there was any water in it looks to me like the waterwheel pit that drove the pumps to keep the mines at Rhosydd drained.
Rhosydd village, if you can call it that was still inhabited until the late 1930s and possibly longer as I understand two men continued to work up there till about 1948 to keep the mine drained in case it reopened, which it sadly never did. I don't know if it's correct but I was once told that Rhosydd had tramways going to both the Ffestiniog Railway at T y G, and the Croesor Tramway. I would love to go up and look for the remains but am now 75 and can't walk far due to cancer treatment damaging my feet.
Your video made me feel like a boy again up in the mountains enjoying the views and the liquid sunshine of Wales!
    Thanks for the memories.

Beautiful area, my grandad worked at Oakeley quarry which is the one covering the hillside to your right approaching the reservoir, one specific spot I think is absolutely stunning is the walk between Moelwyn Mawr and Moelwyn Bach over Craigysgafn, it's one of those areas a bit like the top of the Glyderau with incredible rock structures, that's just a little further on from where you were, a loop taking in the 3 peaks overlooking Blaenau, Yr Hydd, Mawr and Bach is a popular circular route locally, a bit of a hidden gem really.

Some great shots there Paul. I was up there last year sadly, from the village upwards it was shrouded in low cloud so wasn't able to get any good shots from the top but did get a few from the abandoned village.
Caving was my thing before turning to photography so have been in that cave system......its big & awesome.
Off to Dorothea next week 😉.
Keep them vlogs & pics coming 👍

The last time I was up there the miners were still working and that machinery was belting out at full power! The blog was most enjoyable and I am glad that you did not stick to the honeypot spots where they were all marked with a X on where to stand to get the award winning pictures! (The Fence) Nice one, and thanks for taking us up there......Has Steve recovered yet!.......

The area you ended this vlog is, was the Rhosydd Quarry, the processing and transshipment area of the quarry, down a tramway to Cwmorthin , Tanygrisiau or tramway to Creseor.

@@paulcomptonpdphotography ah no sorry, first time heard about that app, might provide useful for my own photography.
Diffwys Slate Quarry Mill has a big old building still with a ceiling that has the "Do Not Enter - Risk Of Life" signs but you can see plenty through the windows if you dont want to go in.
All the old mills there have remains aside from Maenofferen Slate Quarry (Google maps doesn't have right location) & Llechwedd Quarry.
Here is a map of the old mines upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f9/BlaenauFfestiniogMap.png
      Wrysgan Quarry is close to
Cwmorthin Lake where you are in the video. There is a very short and safe tunnel at the top of the incline that you can climb through.
Would be a lot easier if I could post photos on here, and sorry for such a long post, hopefully makes sense,

You and Steve make a great double act. The slate quarry has loads of potential and you could spend all day up there with no shortage of stuff to point a camera at📷 👍 Such a shame about the rubbish and litter you found and quite right to call those responsible to account for their moronic behaviour. 🚯🚯🚯
