That massive hill was my work place for some time, walking up and down every day and can still see the fruits of our labours from a distance. Gratifying.
I was last up there back in 2018, and watched the sun go down from that lookout point you were at earlier in the video. I may be English born and raised, but Wales calls to me in a way that nowhere else on earth does. Truly, Wales is God's Country.
I cannot get enough of Wales, I live in Birmingham and used to make regular trips to Snowdonia, I’ve gotten a bit too old now for all the walking so it’s nice to be able to watch it from my armchair. I’ve watched it three times so far and see something different everytime, it’s just breathtaking, “beautiful”!!
Thanks for sharing your mini-adventure. We are so jealous. We were also happy to see you take care and not do anything dangerous! Our favorite segment was the houses beginning at 12:50.
I certainly enjoy all of your videos 📹. Originally I am from Germany 🇩🇪, but moved to Texas in 1985. It's wonderful seeing Europe, without even leaving the house. Thank you so much 💓
Thanks for uploading this informative topic. It's a nice tribute to the men and their families who lived and worked there. Those guys were incredibly tough and brave. Kind regards.
I work for a company not far from there and travel down for office days every couple of weeks, and I've done that for a couple of years now. I kept telling myself to go explore one evening and last week I did just that. Epic. Amazing. Breathtaking. All of that and more. You simple can not begin to understand the scale of the place until you are up there. I barely scratched the surface so I will need to return.
I could listen to this guys voice forever haha..dinorwic quarry is one of my fave places ever..I love it there..go pretty much every weekend to walk round. Always see something I’ve never seen before, it’s beautiful 💙
I envy the Welsh for the beautiful land with its lush hills and rich colors! In addition to it, the slate gray tones create an unbelievable contrast and texture to the images, it is truly breathtaking and in some places intimidating! But it doesnt end there, the day provided near perfect lighting with clouds casting their shadows on the mountains and the flooded pit with the crystal clear water looked like a jewel. I feel like this is the visually most pleasing video I have seen on your channel... thank you for sharing it!
Clash of the titans was filmed there. When the water is low or near gone, there's a little building in there & 3 little stone paths that they used for filming. Its a stunning place to be. I do spend the day there exploring 🙂
wow just wow..kept saying it over and over thru your video. What an amazing, beautiful, breath taking place. Thank you for sharing cause I live in the US and would never see a place like this.
Always enjoy your videos but this one was, for me a bit specially. I'm English but I love north Wales, especially the Snowdon area. I'm too old and knackered to walk that now so thanks for taking us there!!
I'm at a loss for words. That's how beautiful the video is. I love seeing the old black & white pics and footage of back in the operating days. One very beautiful video. Thanks for showing that. Stay safe & take care.
Absolutely stunning. Beautiful scenery. Must have been a hardy lot to have worked the slate mine day in, day out with all kinds of weather. The addition of the old films really added a great touch. Thank you for bringing me to a place that I'll probably never see in person. Job well done, Cheers 👊👍✌
If you want to see something about how the quarries worked and the people who worked the search for ''The Huntly archives '' th-cam.com/video/S-NZ2n2n3hI/w-d-xo.html. Save you searching ))
Having lived not far from there . I was lucky to hike and climbe different slate quarries when I was younger. Great memories. Unfortunately visitors and tourists take the slate for themselves. Working as an instructor at an activity centre on our days off we would climb there and finish the day by jumping in the lake . Great video thanks for the memories 👍🏻
Hi Colin what a lovely location and breathtaking views of Wales. That lake was so nice, such a lovely place and lots of wildlife very interesting video thanks for sharing
omg , That was gorgeous looking there !!! The moutains , Blue water Thank you 😊 I've never seen something as beautiful as that ! 😍 loved the pictures you shown of the miner's, That place is HUDGE
WOW, fantastic views, you were really high up... the mining of the slate, and deep water pond reminded me when i lived in Vermont, USA, where they still mine Granite, some of the old quarries are 100 feet from the collected water line.. Some people dive from the top into the 30 feet of water depth .. a missed dive and you are dead... Plus we have the rolling hills like those in Wales. Thanks for all the effort you put into this video..👍👍👍
American mine explorer here... I must say, our mines are vulgar compared to those you have over there! Just stunning, those miners houses were a sight!!! Instantly subscribed... We think our limestone mines are big... Lol! Little do we know.
Loved this video. Simpler times now lost forever and all that remains are shadows of a past life. You should definitely go back with a bike or a drone. Well done on that climb and for an interesting video!
You really are an excellent videographer and you have put so much effort into this explore! The old movie clips were amazing and added to the absolute professionalism of your work. Thank you Mr Bearded 🧔 Explorer!!
Awesome video TBE - I think you are the only tuber that I like before I watch as I always know it will be great. I actually saved this for a couple of days before watching, a bit like eating my greens before getting to the roast potatoes :) - Now you got me wanting to camp in the Welsh mountains - I've not even got a tent and my wife and kids would probably kill me but it looks just perfect to me.
Absolutely breathtaking place! I have been to the slate museum down in the valley but not the actual Dinorwig site. What great footage, really fabulous video! I have a huge respect for the miners that lived and worked there, it could not have been an easy life. Thanks!
Walked, explored and even climbed its slate rock. Always an interesting place, and always something new to discover. That very small building would’ve been the toilet, built on a hill side so the crap is washed down the hill. No blast shelter would be built so close to accommodation. Fantastic place.
If I remember rightly it was a blast shelter. The 2 rows of cottages you access from the bus stop/ Blue Peris are the Anglesey Barracks. weekday accommodation for the workers from ( as I'm sure you'll have worked out) Anglesey. The wagons went down the incline and on to the Padarn Railway to Port Dinorwig / Y Felinheli. I tried to follow it in a vid on my channel. The quarry was the second biggest in the world. The biggest was the Penrhyn quarry by Bethesda where Zip World now is. We've had a few landslides into the lakes so you were right not to risk a dip. Did you visit the bomb store while around Llanberis?
Wow. A super video Colin. Thanks for trekking around some of there for us. Beautiful scenery. I am amazed at that clear water. I used to visit North Wales often as a kid with my family on summer holidays and we would be passing all the slate mountains and see lots of slate souvenirs everywhere. fascinating. 👍
I remember wandering round there as a 12 year old on a family holiday, well before it became a tourist attraction in the early 90's. A brilliant place to explore, must go back soon!
Absolutely stunning scenery, just beautiful! What an amazing place to work, but obviously it was a lot different for the miners back when it was a working mine, tough times indeed. I'm sure they couldn't have appreciated like we can today....respect to them & their families
Looking at the film clips you added the men took their lives in their hands. Those houses must have been derelict for many years. The scenery is breathtaking. Visited round there many times and climbed up the pyg track up,Snowdon. Unfortunately my mobility isn't so good now so thank you for filming that place I will now never see in real time. Stay safe xx
Those are not houses , they are either workshops or what they called the ''Barracks'' , a place the men stayed in during the working week and then they would go to their homes at the weekend , all 1.5 days of it
What a superb video’. I can’t imagine how hard it must have been and so dangerous working there! It must of been so beautiful in the summer and a nightmare in the winter and
You forgot to mention the slate museum at Lake level which is well worth a look, and I belive entry is free. You can also ride the steam railway as well using some of the locos that worked the quarry. God bless
I hope you get to go back there one day because there's some stunning stuff you missed. Most of the best stuff IMO is on the Australia gallery. The mill shown in the black & white photo with it's huge cutting tables is up there, along with the water tower, compressor building & train shed/maintenance building where Locomotive Alice was rescued for restoration. There's 2 ways to get up depending on how much you want to see & risk... The popular way is by where you went up the power station cable incline(A5-A6) behind the millhouses. Instead of going up there you can walk past Dali's hole & there's a large number of steps leading up behind it to Matilda & Pen Garrett where there's an interesting group of buildings. Keep heading up for some of the blondin towers & to reach the Australia gallery then double back to go back down (you could go up the last few couple of galleries but I don't remember much being there). The other route which is more dangerous, is to follow the C incline (Braich Side). You can get onto that by walking all the way along the public route at the millhouse/viewpoint level towards Nant Peris until you see the foundations of another huge millhouse (Duffryn Gallery) then going over the fence & following the incline ramp(c4) up through the galleries but it's best to check underneath the ramp on each level, as some slate isn't stable, there's some graves on the way up there & some assorted machinery etc. You can then go down the former route but I wouldn't advise reversing it & coming down the C inclines. Also where the set of intact houses on the tourist trail (Anglesey Barracks) are you can venture over the fence where incline A is, round & down that hill, or come up from the power station road's zigzagging slate tourist path & head down when you hit the metal bridge that passes over a wheelhouse & follow the wall round, you'll know you're going the right way when you see an angel ;). You'll see a huge pump building & adjacent generator building, you can follow the slopes up to the viewpoint/millhouse level.
Excellent video; I'm pretty familiar with Llanberis but have never explored the Dinorwig side of Llyn Padarn. Will be doing very shortly though. Thanks for your insight :)
To make all those buildings in slate and so simple but beautiful and by hand is incredible, If I had been there I would have to pick up a bit of slate to make a house sign 😆
Stunning video. I’m going to snowdonia next month but I don’t think I’ll have enough time to visit this place. Love the old footage and photos you added. 👍👍👍
Lovely explore, thanks. If you go in at the lowest level, Vivian Quarry, and up the inclines, there used to be small winch houses still with the roofs on. Rock climbers in the 1980's used to stay in them while they bolted and climbed new routes on the slate slabs. They'd return home once a fortnight to sign on!
I lived in Llanberis for many years , you needed to get even higher. You'd find the view a lot better. Keep up with the excellent vids. Great to watch.
The what you thought was a toilet is probably a shelter, used by walkers to stay out of all the rain they get in north Wales, my daughter has just moved from Blaenau Ffestiniog so I know the area well, great video xx
Just like you said Colin spectacular views, and yes if the Welsh council was to think about restoration on the old house 🏠 would be another good reason to come and visit , ,I surprised you didn't take a picnic with you and something to drink 👍😅

Listening to that music with headphones is just magic.!

Stunning mate, class video as usual
Great video fantastic views
Brilliant video! I love Snowdonia, it’s just breathtaking. I’m definitely adding this place to my list next time I’m in Wales 😃
This is on my next to do list as I’ve done the other quarries in the Area lol. Great video mate 👍
Allow yourself plenty of time , its huge
Excellent video; I'm pretty familiar with Llanberis but have never explored the Dinorwig side of Llyn Padarn. Will be doing very shortly though. Thanks for your insight :)

Great knowledge and history of early bolting. Made my climbing much safer yrs ago for sure
what an intresting and wunderful landscape
I lived in Llanberis for many years , you needed to get even higher. You'd find the view a lot better. Keep up with the excellent vids. Great to watch.
Also if you went on the other side of the valley you'd find the WW2 bomb storage site.
I was there last Sunday. Got some great shots. Didn’t venture into the upper areas though. I got vertigo just watching your footage at 21 mins.
The what you thought was a toilet is probably a shelter, used by walkers to stay out of all the rain they get in north Wales, my daughter has just moved from Blaenau Ffestiniog so I know the area well, great video xx
Known as snakes and ladders. The slate quarries in North Wales are good for exploring. Maenofferen is one of my favourites.
Just like you said Colin spectacular views, and yes if the Welsh council was to think about restoration on the old house 🏠 would be another good reason to come and visit , ,I surprised you didn't take a picnic with you and something to drink 👍😅
Wow man beautiful scenery great video bro 👊❤️
