Smart Car Woes.....

- In this video that I was not planning to make, we experience a Issue with the Smart For two Passion.
The Smart cut out at 40mph on a main road and we managed to coast it off the road to a industrial estate.
We then experience the delays with the breakdown company which included a possible 10 hour Wait for the car to be seen to.
So we broke out the Scottish Car Enthusiasts and Trains TV recovery service and enlisted the help of Mrs Scottish Car Enthusiasts and the Skoda Fabia.
As always feel free to like and subscribe to the channel for more Smart Content, Car Meets, Magazine Reviews, Car Reviews, 3 Cylinder Adventures, car tinkering, Train Videos and the Occasional Mindfulness Video.
Hoping to do a follow up video of what happened after we asked for a call out to the house, it got even better.
Somehow I think you're being sarcastic... 'better'...
@@joopjansen9102 yeah I am
The RAC are shite in my opinion. I broke down in a work van once at 5 in the morning. I was sat there until 3am the next day, in a country layby with nothing about. When the guy finally got there it was just a normal patrol guy even though I had stated on the phone and app multiple times that there was a great big hole in the side of the engine with a piston and con-rod hanging out of it and that I needed a straight recovery! I had to wait a further 2 hours for a truck to arrive! Never got one apology from it either!
Bad luck with the breakdown, on the bright side though, at least it happened close to home and didn’t leave you stranded somewhere between Birmingham and Edinburgh. Fingers crossed it’s a cheap and easy fix
Oh dear, i'm not surprised though Davy. I had one of these and it was absolute scrap, such a constant headache and glad to get shot of it.. Take my advice pal, just get rid of it will bankrupt you
Hope ur car is ok!! Love that color!! The last time I needed a tow I called my insurance cos they give u three free tows every 6 months and they took 3 hours to process my request and then sent a truck out from a company located over 400 miles away. I love 70’s BL cars so I spend a shocking amount of time waiting for tow trucks 😂😂😂
Wow, I am glad I'm not with the RAC. I found Start rescue to be pretty good.
Crank no start that fixes itself as the engine cools strongly point to the crank position sensor. It's in the bell housing under the throttle body, not too bad a job though they can sometimes be hard to remove due to corrosion making them tight. SAM issues typically cause no crank and you often get the three lines on the geat display, though a bunch of other things can cause this as well.
Does the RAC only have one tow truck or serviceman to cover the whole of England? Having to wait that long for them to show up is totally unacceptable, and even if they can't send one of their own reps, they could at least put you through to a nearby garage.
Remember to check the oil level, they burn oil like crazy. Because the oil is so thin, you dont see the reek. But its burning like crazy. Check the oil weekly.
@@perwahloo3499 used to checking oil quite often I also have a pure tech engined car that likes a drink of oil....
Plug in a code reader, see if you get a RPM signal when cranking- that'll indicate if the crank sensor is doing it's thing or not.
I binned the RAC after I broke down at 4pm, multiple calls and time promises later I was eventually collected by my boss at 8am the following day after they never turned up, even the taxi to get me to work didnt turn up...
Sorry to hear this Davy, they can be a headace those wee motors. How is the Escort going?
@@stevieboyNI This replaced the Escort, I sold the Escort back in April to pay some unexpected Bills.
@@scottishcarenthusiastsandtrain Ah thats a shame, i saw it at Rustival was a nice car. Great engine those old turbo diesels. What are you taking to the next Rustival?
@@stevieboyNI at the minute the Cactus, hoping to replace it with the Smart if I can.
@@scottishcarenthusiastsandtrain Yeah that would be great if you did get the Smart there. Maybe buy a wee code reader, see what comes up, hopefully a simple fix. I'm hoping to bring an R52 Cooper S to Rustival. Well done on this video, over a thousand views!
I had a similar issue with my Smart Roadster, it was the Crank sensor. Bit of a faff to change, but it solved it for me.
A lot of people beating up on Ian here but i'm sure we've all been there when we have sold an old car to a friend or family member and it's gone wrong for them, which is awkward as hell and you do feel for them. In this case it's a fellow TH-camr but i'm sure the new owner bought it expecting the odd bit of trouble. If anything it might have brought a new following to his channel :-)
Thanks for posting the video. It’s s a no no to assume when buying breakdown cover through an insurance company that it’s going to be anything but the basic cover, so always read the small print. Too late now, but the solution once you knew about the £160 RAC charge would have been to start the car, drive it for a couple of minutes until it conks out again (so more than a quarter mile from home) and then call the RAC. Pushing or towing it that small distance would also have been an option. Tell them you’re walking home, and ask them to call you when at the car. You then walk or ask your wife to drive you back to the smart. That would have saved you the £160 charge. And, Toolstation also sell tow ropes, and most probably cheaper than Halfords. Hope it was not an even more expensive fix on the Smart, and hope you will let us know how things go. Fingers crossed for you.
I cannot believe how "around the corner" you are from me, Seafield road, that wee snack bar is one of my favourite food stops! In fact, i think i saw you getting towed! I'm just over in Northfield and would love to see the Hubnut Smart sometime. :)
Small World, once I get the Smart sorted you are welcome for a look. I too am originally from Northfield/Mountcastle.
I will not be joining the RAC then oh no good luck on the fix greetings from South Lanarkshire
Wow!! The RAC service appears to be shite nowadays.
Some folk here need to think about what they are saying. I have been critical of Hubnut's bodges from time to time especially one iirc when he was tinkering with brakes on one of his cars.
However, everybody buying old secondhand cars privately, usually to save money or to obtain something old that they have a soft spot for knows full well that you are one turn of the key away from yet another breakdown. This is why the roads are not littered with 20 to 30 year old cars in daily use.
It's terrible bad luck but then Hubnut did a lot of recommissioning work on this car. And then he drove it from his home to Birmingham to sell it and it immediately went from birmingham to Edinburgh, all without problems.
If that isn't a good road fest I don't know what is.
How many timesnhave we seen Hubnut buy a car and find it riddled with faults? It's why the used banger game makes for compelling youtube viewing.
Good luck with getting back on the road. If you have a "buy me a coffee" or other fundraiser point us to it and I'll bung a few quid in to help you back onto the road.
Very, very well said indeed. I'm quite disappointed to see so many derogatory comments directed toward Ian. It's rather unfair. As you say, this is the used car game. Sometimes you win, but you have to expect the worst and hope for the best. You're buying something completely unknown, often with no service history, multiple owners, and mostly at least 2 decades old. It is very much caveat emptor and a gamble. You cannot turn around and blame the last owner, unless they were absolutely dishonest and knowingly misrepresenting it, which I'm sure Ian wouldn't have done.
The people suggesting the new owner should return it for a refund or ask Ian to contribute to the cost of repair are forgetting that a private sale, at least where I come from, is a hand shake and good luck. As soon as you hand over the cash and take the keys, it's your problem. You own it. The seller doesn't want to hear about it. If you want protection and comeback, pay more and buy from a licenced motor vehicle dealer.
This is unfortunate and annoying, but it has happened to all of us who buy these old cars, more than once. And it will happen again. Hopefully it's nothing too major and it'll be up and running again.
Always found the RAC very disappointing. Very slow. The AA seems to be better.
Better but not much better .
These things are junk at the best of times. Nightmare to work on, i wouldn't have rhe patience for it.
Funnily enough, you're not allowed to tow with a rope here in Ireland 🙄
I've a bar set i bought in Lidl years ago and it's great. Good luck with the car repairs 😉👍🇮🇪
Who told you that? Tow ropes are for sale all over the place in Ireland and are completely legal to use.
@@kevfit4333 my friend is a truck driver and when I broke down he refused to tow me with a rope, his sister is a garda so I believed him 🤔
Why would you 'invest' £160 in a service you're already unhappy with?? Surely that £160 would be better spent on a local mobile mechanic or, if you can diagnose the problem yourself, on parts to actually fix what's wrong.
@@OldCarsNewVan Because I cancelled the original Job, thinking I could get them to come out to my house, not realising I did not have home start, this was their call out charge. We've already raised a complaint with them as their call out to the house was also a farce.
@@scottishcarenthusiastsandtrain sorry - I'm not 'trolling' - fellow TH-cam channel here so I know how bad that is - but when you found out you didn't have Home Cover surely that would have been the time to say 'ok - forget it - don't come at all' and save the £160 to put towards a mobile mechanic and/or parts? On the basis you already had a pretty good idea their service was terrible. Nobody should feel obliged to pay extra money once they've discovered their not covered as part of their policy. Anyway, I'm sorry you're having such a bad time with it and hope you get it sorted. I know Ian will be mortified that it's caused you so many problems so early one - but of course that is these old cars which we love - fine one minute, knackered the next
@@OldCarsNewVan yeah thinking about it now I should have left it as it's just caused me so much stress. Luckily I found I was still paying for breakdown cover with another provider for my last car that includes home start, so I have amended my details and going to call them out shortly.
The wind blew my motorbike over and it broke the throttle assembly so it wouldn't run. RAC refused to come and get me, even though I pay for full recovery, as they said it was an accident and not a breakdown. In the end it cost me £400 to get the bike back home
RAC left my aged father in law at side of road for 7 hours. I was with green flag at the time and they rescued the wife within half an hour.
Hope everything works out soon
Seeing a lot of hating on the RAC here - I've never had to wait more than an hour for them, usually about 30 to 45 minutes? Really pulled out the stops when I had to be recovered from North Wales to South Lincolnshire, I had a taxi from Chester to home late at night and my car was delivered the next day to my home.
Check the Sam’s unit plugs sometimes it doesn’t earth properly car cuts out . Or plug not earthing properly heats up . Or melting on the plugs
Try autoaid cost about £70 pa , used em twice , on seen within 1 hour , brilliant
I gave up he RAC and the AA some years back and use Green Flag who have always responded well when needed - pot hole puncture and water leak - over the past 4-5 years. Anything over 3 hours response time is unacceptable.
Thats shocking from the rac i have bin with the aa for about 25 years and on the odd occasion i needed them i never waited more than about a hr or so.
I've never had RAC cover until now, always had been with Green Flag or Manufacturers breakdown and have to admit never had a issue with Green flag, always came out quickly.
HI to true them Skoda are reliable now than bay's of old. The smart is probably self fault finding manually on it's own lol hope it's a easy fix cant what for the next video to find out the results. 👍👍
I had a similar issue with random stalls. It was a faulty crankshaft position sensor. Curious to know what the cause for that one is.
Sorry to hear about your Smart problems Davy , I hope it can easily be sorted . Kick the RAC into the long grass .
Have you tried phoning the hubnut guy? Maybe you can get your money back or help towards fixing x
Ian probably would help, but shouldn’t really have to. S/h cars are sold as seen.
@@Meesag1997 I've been speaking to Ian but who was to know that this issue would arise, I've already got a possible lead on what I need.
@@scottishcarenthusiastsandtrain I hope you get it fixed, try not to get too stressed or upset about it x
You didn’t get a temp warning did you? This sounds like what my bmw did when it got “over heated”. Sensor fault. First lost power, then cut out. Would run in idle but in the end you could not even engage clutch before it shut itself down. So had to push it into workshop. Is this the HubNut smart?
No temp warning at all, the battery and oil and MIL light came on.
@@scottishcarenthusiastsandtrain Sounds like the crank sensor. if it is a hall effect type then these can be very unpredictable and schizo.
I know Ian replaced a vacuum hose in the engine, just wondering if it’s connected as he had no boost and running issues
Did you drive it all the way up to Scotland? Something has got hotter than it's been in years and has packed up.
@@jamesmiller6977 yes drove it all the way from Birmingham up to Edinburgh.
All breakdown services are shit. Why didnt you tow it to the dealers?
To the dealers ? Ok, I’m sorry… you’re probably joking.
sounds like the cat is plugged up
You poor man, its awful to be left waiting like that for hours. My advice; take your daughter home in a cab or go and sitin a warm place and get a coffee or food. Let RACV winch the Smart up on a truck. and call you when its ready. Or yes, tow it home and let them recover it from there. Be comfortable. Australia
Hi dude speak to ian he is good people I'm sure he will want to help.
Fortwo ❤😊
Oops 🫤
Sounds like you are handy with the tinkering.... i don't like these cars because they would be difficult to work on. You'd probably need a decent diagnostic tool aswell. You can't trust new electronic parts either. I bought a map sensor and it lasted 3 weeks, showing up 21 faults when I got it to the garage, they advised me to scrap the car 🙄 luckily I had a donor car and liberated the 27 year old map sensor from that, 3 years later it's still going. BTW my car is a 97 cinquecento s.... love the fiat's me 🤗
Getting harder to find real mechanics these days instead of parts changers. I've tinkered with cars for 35 years and limit myself to owning 3 car's due to lack of space.
I have been driving Smarts for close to 15 years now, and I love them! Don't buy one that has been tampered with by someone who does not know what they are doing. We know who he is.
I really don't know why his channel is so popular, he really is a clueless bodger of the highest order. I think the all time low was when he changed the exhaust manifold on his 2CV and managed to put back on the same one that he took off! How on earth do you manage that? 😂
Ian is the 1st to tell people he isn't a mechanic. This could well turn out to be a sensor failure which could happen at any time. Anyone expecting a free lifetime parts and labour warranty on an 18 year old car sold privately wants his bumps feeling 😂
@@2Wheels4Wheels. I'm sure he could offer some help or advice to Davy though, you can see he is upset x
@@andrewlawkeyboard warrier
I've been speaking to Ian, and Ian I think is as upset that the Smart is throwing a strop. Plans are at the minute afoot which I will explain in a update video to get the Smart Running.
call hubnut Ian
typical of those smarts plus this one has passed through the hands of the king of bodges mr hubnut so get rid asap
Yeah it was lying in a garden for ages before he got it
Dave said he had driven the car for some 1,000 miles since the purchase. No need to call Ian the king of bodges - though he might actually chuckle being called that. I'm sure he is as upset as Dave is.
You can't blame Ian. The car, at point of sale, was working as it should. Hubnut had done quite a few hundred miles before with no issues. The problem herevis the recovery company.
@@andrewhaines3259 yup lies with the Breakdown Company, the car by the time it stalled done nearly 1000 miles between me and Ian.
He had nothing but issues with it though.. Starter motor, boost issues etc
@scottishcarenthusiastsandtrain Until you get it somewhere to work on, you won't know if it's a simple fix. Let's hope so!
