We grow super sauce and san marzano. While we are happy with both, I might grow another roma variety in the future. We also grow burpee vivacious hybrid, not for sauce or salsa, but eating. It is roma shape but watery so not good for sauce but so so tasty.
I enjoyed this! I mostly grow Roma types, I can a year’s worth of sauce! I prefer to grow determinate tomatoes supported with a Florida weave. I absolutely have to grow varieties with Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus resistance, so my choices are limited. Picus has been my go to variety for some years now, I couldn’t get hold of Picus this year so I went with Plum Regal, which has also performed well for me in the past. I would love to grow some of the varieties you mentioned, especially San Marzano, but alas, they wouldn’t give me a crop!
Thanks for your comments. And Thanks for watching. One thing about tomatoes is that you definiatly have to grow specific to your area and climate. I am not familiar with Picus, but I will have to go look it up. Thanks again. Gary
Nice tips about Roma. Can you suggest me a determinate big size Roma type tomato for canning. Because I live in cold climates where sumner is really short
For the most reliable determinate paste / roma tomato, i grow the traditional Roma and La Roma III, which is an improved Roma. Great producers. Thanks for watching and asking your question.
For couple years I was growing regular roma but they are really small in size , this year I am planning to grow plum regal and paisano Both determinate are Roma
To be honest, I didn’t even know there were different varieties of Roma tomatoes! I know I had an Amish paste in the garden last year because my mother-in-law gave us one. I’ll have to pay more attention to what we get this year. We use our tomatoes almost exclusively for salsa. Thanks for the info!
I have grown 1 determinate San Marzano type called 10 Fingers of Naples and it was very productive in large clusters of 6-10 fruit, and finished at about 3.5 feet. Very tasty but not as much depth of pure vegetal savoriness as with the long growing indeterminates like SM type I and II.
Depending on where you live, check your local garden center. If not there, then you would have order seed from a seed catalog company and then grow them yourself. Thanks for watching.
Rarely do I hang out my credentials, for I don't think its necessary, but you asked if I was a gardener? I have a degree in Horticulture, Greenhouse Mgmt, to be specific. Over 30 years in the trade, from Garden Center Manager, Fertilizer and Chemical Regional Sales manager, Municipality Parks Departmet Manager, Ballfields to public gardens, Master Gardener...both Author, Lecturer and educator, all before starting a gardening TH-cam Channel. So yes, I am a gardener.

Thanks for watching and commenting. Great idea to think and eat out of the box.
Always grow a bunch of San Marzano original strain from Franchi Seeds, and Piennolo del Vesuvio. Combo makes the best sauce! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching and commenting. I'll have to check out those seed companies!
Good morning. how many tomatoes can you harvest from one plant of san marzano ? Thank you very much
I have probably about 100 at least off of mine. I let them just go crazy though. Takes about 18 of them to fill a 32 Oz canning jar.

Ten Fingers of Naples is an excellent determinate cousin to s.marzano and comes in heavy.

What did you think of the Amish Paste? Thanks for sharing and good luck on growing and experimenting with other varieties.
I don’t know. I threw all the tomatoes in one bucket so I didn’t know which was which lol
@@michellecordova6190 to funny!
Thanks so much. I’m going to try the Amish paste or San Marzano. Probably the latter due to the interesting shape and few seeds.
Thanks for watching and best of luck!
Super interesant, like 👍

Is San Marzano determinate or indeterminate?
It is an indeterminate variety of tomato.
@@SuccessfulGardens1 Thanks for the quick answer.
It's pretty crucial to know which tomato variety is what kind to get any harvest 🙂
@@olefosshaug5565 yes it is.

Where can a person get the Amish paste Roma

I grow San Marzano
That is a great flavorful tomato!
This was very interesting, thankyou. I intend to make salsas and pastie sauces. Watching from New Zealand, you look very stoned in your videos lol
Thanks for watching and hopefully subscribing from NZ. As for the stoned look, I guess I better change my look. 😆
Hows growing tomatoes from seed extreme? Are you a gardener or is this your youtube hobby?!

I'd stay away from 'exclusive' types, too much GM going on... not healthy.
Thats why you needvto be careful of your seed sourcing. Thanks for watching.
There isn’t a lot of GM going on because it’s expensive and there are restrictions. You aren’t going to get GM seeds cheap
