Man I’ve followed along on your channel and found a roller out of a 92 mustang for my 76 F100. Never built a motor by myself before but I tell everyone I got my 302 degree from ThunderHead289. Thanks for teaching me the right way and the theory behind these motors and how they work. We could use an instructor like you down here at fort benning at Bradley master gunner school. Thanks for everything brother
ford 460 external balance, should the flexplate weight be facing the 12 o'clock position ? or be facing 180 degs the other way in the 6 o'clock position? in relation to the hatchet weight in the front. please help me, thanks
Awesome video, thank you for making it! In fact, several of your videos have helped me over the years. I'm currently needing to replace the harmonic balancer in my '78 Mopar 360, and I was curious about the reassembly process. You mentioned just bolt it on, but how do you make sure the "zero mark" is accurate? I believe that's very important to set the timing? And for various other jobs that require the engine to be at TDC. Also, how do you suggest selecting one? Seems like everyone and their cousin makes one, ranging from ~70 bucks to over 300! Many thanks!
Hey my 96 5.0 f150 has the harmonic balance like 4 pointed like a cross and they discontinuedbit what can i do to it can i just put a regular one what are the 4 spikes for.
Hey, not sure if you’ll see this. But I’m having an issue with my 1990 ford bronco 5.0. Ever since I installed new spark plugs(motorcraft) gapped to what it said in the Haynes manual; new cap, rotor, ignition coil, and motorcraft wires it has been bucking super bad when I put it in drive. It runs pretty smooth in park, as soon as it’s in drive the engine shakes really bad. And it makes pinging noises on acceleration. Since the tune up, I’ve changed the injectors cause I needed to anyway(no change to performance). I tried to put the old spark plugs in exactly how they were, engine still shaking bad. Also, I checked the timing and it’s timed to Haynes manual specs. Any advice or insight would be appreciated. Thanks
You messed up the firing order accidentally/the firing order and where it aligns with the cap is out of phase. Get the engine to TDC and see if it mostly aligns with cylinder 1wire on the cap vs another cylinder. If you are good to this point, then go through the firing order on the cap, the issue is then probably there
no problem, this channel exists to help others. i will have a full detailed video on moving through this engine, i just havent put it together yet. im a little behind with that particular series (notice my coats). takes a lot of editing out unnecessary wrench time.
Hey my Harmonic balancer is being stubborn and doesn’t want to come out, already broke one of the bolts from the kit, got any tips to get it out, it’s also a 302
I have a question I bought a 79 f100 302 supposedly put a motor in out of a 90s mustang how do I know exactly what her Monic balancer I need seem so they’re supposed to be two different weights ??????
If it is a 90s 5.0, it should absolutely be a roller engine (from a mustang). A roller engine has shorter pushrods because the lifters are longer - you can pull a pushrod and measure the length - 6.250 is what your looking for vs the longer 6.750. Some later engines had flat tappet cams in a roller block, but any car engine is roller cam. If the pushrod is 6.250, the imbalance is definitely 50oz
@@ThunderHead289 Yes the big crank washer was stuck inside. But i ended up getting it out! Just used a flat blade driver and a hammer and tapped one side till it came loose.
the bolt will draw it in just fine. if you cant get it down far enough to get the bolt started, tap the internal ring with a rubber mallet until you can. as always, apply some lubricant and make sure there is no burrs so the balancer slips on nice and easy.
I find your videos extremely helpful and I appreciate it. Keep doing what you do. I do have a question that no one has an answer to. Hope you can help me. I have an 1984 305 Chevy engine with a much larger harmonic balancer that came off a 350. Will that create a problem with the timing? I can’t get the timing right. If you can help me then I will most appreciate it. Thanks
So im putting an 89 crown vic motor in my ranger went to rockauto to get a new harmonic balancer how do I decide which one I need they have different weights and makes listed for that year
@@ThunderHead289ok thanks, I am going to a carb and duraspark 2 ignition system with this build. I am not going for high horsepower im just looking to build a daily driver. im going to regasket and reseal the engine and im going with a melling oil pump but im not sure if the older vacuum distributor has the style gear to drive the pump like the vic has its a hex looking style on the vic now.
Currently have a 3 bolt balancer on my 302. Everything I see tells me it SHOULD be a 4 bolt. (1974 block). are they interchangable? (obviously would need a 4 bolt pulley if they are). can you do that? or is there problems switching?
Hmmm usually 4 bolts hit the scene with serpentine set ups! Unless it’s an aftermarket balancer, it will only be drilled for one pattern. Check out “Thunderhead289 tech and tune forum” on Facebook and join the group!
You wouldn’t happen to have a video on a Weighted Crankshaft Hub Spacer Damper / Counter Balance? My truck has one and not seen a video or instructions how to remove it after the harmonic balancer is off.
I have the E7 heads on a donor motor that I picked up for my 85 stang, are they worth while to bore the exhaust ports larger, and clean the intake ports. Will I gain any HP??
It all depends what you want to do with your budget, they are no gt40 heads, but if you aren't spinning it past 5500 it really won't matter much. Much better than all stock heads outside of the 40s
It’s tricky with an auto trans You dang near needs to use an impact if it’s in a car. Or remove the starter and dog the flywheel with a breaker bar. I’m assuming you are struggling with the bolt
Yeah man I used an impact to get the bolt out that was easy but now I have my puller on there and I don't know what to do and motor just keeps turning over and I was thinking about putting something in my flywheel with that worries me a little. It's a 94 F150 5.0
Ill have a video coming out eventually here relating to my progress on that project, i use the foaming engine cleaner with a sponge and wire brush. make sure to have everything plugged that you dont want water in !!! most of the time i have an engine fully apart and it is much easier to clean.
FYI, after you clean up the iron components, dry them off really good. At room temperature, immediately before paint, spray engine with white vinegar. Allow to air dry. You will see flash rusting. Totally normal, leave it alone. Prime with rust converting, high heat primer. When primer has set, hit with high heat paint. The vinegar acts as a light acid etch, biting the surface. This is how I restore pans and covers from old junkers, and the paint has never flaked off. This can also apply to frame rails and rust hole repair. Just make sure that all of the steps are in rapid succession and you have removed any flaking, thick or rotten spots. The vinegar technique works with interior dyes also- vinyl and carpet. I'm not claiming to be a professional, btw. Just something I picked up from an old man- it works well, and it's cheaper than the "right" stuff, so I do it.
Hey man, thanks for the video. Can I remove the crank bolt with all of the internals removed? And if I can, will using an impact be the easiest? Thanks again.
I can not get my harmonic balancer (crankshaft) pulley to come off. I've tried using one of those puller kits and it got all bent up. The main bolt is out. I've used PB blaster and WD-40 and it will not come off. My vehicle is a 2007 Mustang 4.0L V6. Any advice on how to get the pulley off? Thank you
I’m not familiar with how the pulley is held on, but if I remember right, it and the balancer and crank pickup are all one piece! You need a harmonic balancer puller !!!!
My 1988 bronco ll had 300 thousand mile on it without doing any of this she went to her grave with the engnige still working clutch an trans were rebuilt or change.just got done putting in timing chain gasket I'm did even throw my engine of timing I seen people pull their starter out just to lock up their all you need is two bolts a ratchet breaker and get to tighten let her run until she got up to check for leaks, no leaks coming from the oil pan, crank shaft or the powersteering pump my timing gasket was leaking like a bast,,, before i fix it, Make sure you spray those rusty bolts down for three day before your repair did't break one bolt

To set timing on a 302 do I look at the sharp edge of the timing pointer or the little round hole?
Sharp edge

Would have been nice if you say what size sockets you're using.
Ford is 15/16"
@ Yes, and I did get the job done. Wish I would have spent more money on the part though.

Please il love you forever if you just tell me how to get that washer out from the harmonic balancer.

@@ThunderHead289 Yes the big crank washer was stuck inside. But i ended up getting it out! Just used a flat blade driver and a hammer and tapped one side till it came loose.
I did not know there was a washer in there.
What if it just brakes the bolts how do you get it off then
When replacing the balancer, will it slide back on or does it need to be pressed on?

I pulled mine off a 95 460 today and the bolt hole in the crank was full of oil. I've never seen that before. Any idea why or where it's coming from?
Put a dab of silicone on the keyway just before re installation of the balancer
