  • Fort Lancaster feels like an area that the world left behind. It's a convenient detour off I-10 if you're travelling to west Texas. Join me for a tour of this magical place.

I go to Fort Lancaster quite often to walk the Forts grounds and to look out from the outlook on my weekend drives. Iraan has a beautiful outlook as well.

Back in the late sixty's, when I was a kid, I went to Arizona with my cousin. I could remember a highway that led down the edge of canyon that had a brick barricade along the cliff side of the highway. I just recently rediscovered it. The 290 spur off of interstate ten. Thanks for the look back.

Awesome video…my aunt and uncle moved down there about 5-6 years ago to work at the towing company they had in town. Just recently moved to the DFW area. Beautiful place and if you stay there overnight you’ll see dozens of deer and other wildlife walking right through and around the town

Also I believe the juvenile camp was open past 2015 or so but I could be wrong..those houses weren’t abandoned when I visited in 2017

This is a great video. I went to A&M in the late 70's. I drove from El Paso to College Station.. I10 was being worked on with the freeway between Ft. Stockton and Ozona was not completed. Traffic was diverted to US 290 (at the time) which was a two lane road from Sheffield up the escarpment and rejoined the freeway just west of Ozona. At that time the speed was 55 mph and all the east-west I10 traffic went up and down the escarpment that he shows you. Today it's a road sign blip on I10 as the freeway takes you into the Pecos Valley further north. This makes an old man smile.

Maybe the Texas Department of Corrections could buy it, then open a skilled based business to have the incarcerated work in as they transition back out into the community.

Visited this area many times in younger years as it was not far from Ozona. Sheffield has dwindled since being bypassed by IH-10. It's a shame but not uncommon in the area. Ft. Lancaster is a neat area to visit and I doubt it gets many visitors. A few remnants of old building but you can sure get a sense of what it was like as it is so remote. Also glad you made it to Sheffield Hill. You get great views from the top and what a steep grade. Really enjoy your videos and make it to Ozona sometime 👍

Every time I see the signs to Ft. Lancaster when traveling along I-10, I tell myself one of these days I'll detour and check it out but I never seem to have time. I will need to make definite plans to stop there on my next trip out west.

That facility in Sheffield needs to be reopened and utilized before it and the staff's housing fall into disrepair. They might also reopen Fort Lancaster as a State Guard training facility. Sheffield should not be allowed to stagnate and die.
