      @@yome1562 That is a good point, in person the car feels very well made and solid. I was in a friends the other day and he has done 75,000km, the car looks brand new inside still, no visible wear. He hasn't had a single issue and changed the tyres at 62,000kms. The car is designed to be immediately familiar to someone moving from an ICE, even down to the regen which is similar to ICE vehicle engine braking, with the physical brake adding further regen, rather than being one pedal driving. Has a big screen, but still has a lot of functions that can be controlled by buttons and the voice activation is pretty good

      @@fwmack1 You can install a frunk and I believe a space saver spare fits where the tyre repair kit goes in the lower boot area. Sure there is a cost to that but I don't believe spares should be just provided as it adds to cost. This is primarily a very good city car, for people venturing out in the country they can buy a spare. The trend is now to subscribe to a breakdown service.

    I've got a BYD Dolphin (which we like very much so far) and discovered a screen shortcut for the climate control: swipe 3 fingers up and down for temperature, and left and right for blower adjustment. I assume it's probably the same other models such as the Atto. Hope that helps 👍😀

      Test drove one here in Australia last week. Yes the 3 finger swipe works great. At less than $50k AUD on the road here we are very lucky. That puts it at around 25k GBP…..

    This car is called Yuan Plus in China and Mexico and they have a new edition called Yuan Pro. In those markets the top spec is below £20K. British governments need to quit their ridiculous taxes and tariffs.

    You can use voice control for temperature or climate. You can specify higher or lower or a specific temperature degree. No need to use your finger. You can use voice control to wind up each of the window or all windows or the blind for sun roof or the whole sun roof.

    I picked up a BYD Dolphin in Australia a few months ago. Slightly smaller car, less of a quirky interior, same battery and motors, so a bit quicker and a bit more range than the Atto. In Australia we don't have the same tarrifs, so the price is very nice.
    Your review seems fair to me. :) I'd add, though, that for me voice assist is a game changer. I have more buttons in the Dolphin, including climate control, but other than turning it on and off, and chosing drive and reverse, I amost entirely rely on voice. I do use the steering wheel buttons a bit - cruise control, volume - and obviously the indicator, but voice control is easy, lets me keep my eyes on the road, and the problems I had with occasionally not knowing the correct term disappeared as I got more used to it. The rotating screen is gimicky, but on long road trips it was better for showing more of the road ahead when navigating. With more money I might have considered a different manufacturer, but the features and performance at the Australian price point (about, if I understand it correctly, 20,000 - 25,000 pounds) are very good.

    I've had mine since late August and the only issue I've had is the windows fogging up heavily and quite frequently (aircon ON, on auto setting), which never happened with any of my previous cars. Other than that, it's a great car.
    I'll try some special anti-fog products on the windows and if I don't forget, I'll post an update here.

      I didn’t check at the time but is there like an Eco setting for A/C? Or on a more serious note is the A/C working?
      A/C should prevent that completely
      But I have been in cars before that have an eco-mode for air-conditioning so it might be working at like 50% output or less

    The Seal video brought me here.
    Living in the US none of the SUV's are available, only the BYD Han which appears to be similar to the Seal in many respects. Converting from UK to US currency give a price point of around $50K USD, cheaper than the Tesla Model S by $30K.
    *What I like about BYD:*
    + Overall design for the interior and exterior. Most new vehicles look the same these days but I like the interior of this one more than most.
    + Many functions have actual buttons, not touch buttons which can be a pain.
    + I actually like the lack of options! It appears that you get a loaded car out of the box and don't have to fiddle with multiple options when simplicity is often easier to deal with.
    + Comparative value for money. I'd actually have to drive one to really evaluate it but from what I've seen so far I'd absolutely look at it. Similar cars are not a ton cheaper here in the US excluding Tesla so if the price point were similar to the UK I think it would actually sell well. I would tend to lease something like this but that's just a personal choice.
    *What I don't like:*
    - The panoramic roof. I was thinking about why this design is carried over to many of their models but I suppose that a single sheet of glass is maybe lighter than metal with insulation and headliner and may be cheaper to manufacture? I think the only way I could live with it is if I tinted it darker still or if they devised some kind of interior cover for it. Not a deal killer, more of a slight irritation but living somewhere where it's very sunny and hot I'd think they would need to consider some kind of covering. Also I would hope that structural rigidity would prevent the roof from collapsing if rolled over.
    - The range. Ok so there are many ways this can improve over time and daily driving is fine, but I live in Texas where long distances are the norm. Just going to a wedding can be a 300+ mi trip one way. We're used to it, traveling at 80 MPH for long distances is nothing for us. I'm not a fan of waiting for an extended time at a charging station when I can fill a gas tank in 5-6 minutes but I may be able to adapt. If they could squeeze 450mi and get that range non-stop at 75-80MPH? I would seriously consider it.
    - Some gimmicky features. The interior "mood" lights (on the Han) are kind of silly even though I do like the muted lights below the front dash that light up the floorboard. If I was able to turn off some of them this would bother me less. I do like the large screen in the middle but let's face it, it's an Android device of which I'm not a fan of, but better that than a proprietary interface. There are other manufacturers that are far more flashy with the silly screens and lights, but I think I could learn to live with this one.
    - Only one model available in the US. The Han looks to directly compete with the Model S and I get it. I'll not get into political discussion here but the upcoming trade issues could prevent even the Han from being affordable in this class of car. Maybe things will change in a few years so no one has to grey market them in.
    I'm not planning on replacing my daily driver yet, maybe in a couple of years, but if we can get these in the US I would put BYD on the short list.

    I first saw BYD when they used them on Amazing Race. Last year did some research and liked most of what I read. I read that the CEO of Ford drives one, however that could have been a rumor. One request. Can you also give dimensions in (feet, inches). I know that you have viewers in US, and unfortunately we are backwards and don't use the metric as much as we should. Love the fit and finish, interior is very smart. I would love to see them in the US, not sure if our current incoming admin is going to screw up our relationships with other countries. BYD brand naming is quite strange one as the BYD itself and it's Chinese name does not represent anything.
    I think the founder admit that the name indeed does not represent anything. It is just a typical name he or his team come up with when at that time a "strange" name, or looks feels more exotic is better choose. So they choose BYD.

    I am just a bit worried about Chinese cars. If we ever have a problem with China. Have they put a program in all the cars. So that they can switch them all off. That way they could stop you in the middle of the road. They would then have a bargaining point. Which could cause a lot of problems for the country.

      Electric cars in the UK will always charge at 7kW at home here due to the infrastructure in the UK. So with the battery size on board it’ll be about 9 hours

    £37,000 for an Atto 3? Crikey. The long range version is $50,000 in Australia, about £25,000. Helps that there's no domestic car manufacturing to protect with tariffs. We test drove one a few weeks ago and I was monumentally unimpressed. Just felt like an ICE car, and who wants that? No one pedal driving mode. Interior is a bit wacky but I didn't dislike it as much as I thought I would; my wife liked it, though. Interestingly, the version we drove only had BYD on the back, not Build Your Dreams, so maybe that's a regional thing. In the end we bought a Model Y, picking it up today. More expensive, yes, but you get more car for your money, and I imagine the resale value will be higher.

    I really wish these companies would put more effort into making their screens look more like it belongs in their car and not just a cheap tablet interface. I drive the new A Class and the look of the interface is so well integrated it looks like it should be there. In my opinion, this looks like someone has stuck a cheap (but big) tablet on the dash.

      True they all have their own designs, some more swooping and integrated, some like an iPad / tablet on top. Depends what you’re after and what you like the look of! 🤓

      In Australia the base A class costs 60% more than the Atto 3, I think we will forgive it for not integrating its screen in. I could buy an Atto 3 and a MG4 (64.5kwh) after rebates, for the price of a base model, petrol A class.

      @ you are wrong. Uk only imposes a 10% tarrif on Chinese cars and has confirmed that it will not increase them. A 10% tariff is not responsible for a nearly 300% markup on the car I mentioned. Nor I believe that shipping a car from China to the UK costs so much….

    With the height of the boot door, I doubt there are that many 6'2" Chinese folks, and really, they're the target audience for BYD cars.

      It was a Mercedes, but on a C-Class before I started TH-cam. And it was on a multimedia system called Audio 20 which had Garmin Map Pilot. It was painfully slow. One click and it took about 2-3 seconds between each press.

    Look at the videos/reviews....a lot of ev's in China etc catching fire

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Media like to report on car fires but for some reason only if it’s an EV. Probably because it drives views and clicks etc.
      There was a very good example of an airport car park fire in the UK, every news outlet was all over it trying to find out what car it was. Rumours spreading it was an EV or even a plug-in hybrid.
      I saw it first hand, the second it was neither of those, the reporting died down massively.
      Car fires happen all the time, fact. The world is a big place, statistically speaking EV’s are less likely to catch fire though.

    • @eamonnodonnell6659
      @eamonnodonnell6659 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @npoleary
      Hi Nick.
      Do you mean the fire at Luton airport, yes my thoughts were it was an ev at first, in fact it was a diesel which is less prone to fires but as you said it happens to most unfortunately.
      There was an EQA which literally went bang and caught fire thankfully after the occupants were out. The only issue with ev fires is they are extremely hard to out out.
      I'll be sticking with my B class for now, hopefully getting a different car next year, maybe a used ev as they're lot cheaper a year or so old .
      Cheers Nick

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah that’s the one
      There will always be car fires, and the odd incident involving a fire in consumer tech that we all buy and use but they are extremely rare. But the probability is not zero, it’s just very unlikely to happen or could happen from external sources.
      For some reason Media like to jump on the bandwagon if it’s an EV. I witnessed flames from 3 cars this year myself, none were an EV and none appeared in news the next day.
      But if it was an EV…I bet they make the news.
      Problem is puts people off because they think that all lithium ion batteries are like that, and yet we all carry at least one in our pocket 👍🏼
      Ah that’s nice! B-Class is very practical! 😊

      I’ve seen them online e…they also were rumoured to be getting rid of all compact cars and focussing on the luxury segment like C-Class and above.
      Not true as they’re brining out a CLA next year.
