- Zane sets up quite the challenge for himself when he gets behind the wheel of a 2021 Chevrolet Suburban with the 3.0L Duramax Diesel and attempts to get over 30 miles per gallon. Can he pull it off?

General Motors is under promising and over delivering in the fuel efficiency department. Really happy to see a diesel being on offer in the Suburban again.
We have an Ecodiesel Ram, and considering its size and weight, it gets over 31-34MPG depending on the foot setting (LOL). Now, she wants to get a large diesel SUV. I believe this is it.
Can’t wait to pick ours up! Love the 3.0 in my Sierra. They hit it out of the park.

LS version bare bones except a good stereo makes this a possible for my overland rig. Wish they'd allow the diesel in the Z71, not sure why it's not an option. Ideas on why not? LM2 crate engine would be awesome to repower my 97 Land Cruiser.
They claimed the intercooler wouldn't fit with the Z71's revised lower front end. If you notice there is no intake in the bumper of the Z71 where the intercooler is. Also no air dam. Not that any physical components were behind the air dam but it was designed with approach angle in mind.

Is idling bad for diesel?
55 miles per hour is usually your most fuel efficient speed you should have no trouble getting over 30
The only way to get the correct mpg is to calculate it. The information center is not that exact.
Yeah, I agree, some people don’t get it.
When ive tested information centers they are usually overly conservative (I get 5-10% more then what they estimate)
I’d like to see true fuel mileage. Fill up, drive X miles, fill up again & math it out.
I have seen this on another site. They did this, and it was higher than the vehicle readout. It will surprise you.
Is the diesel more reliable than the 5.3 gas?

I never owned Diesel engine vehicle, especially chevy. How reliable is this engine? Can anyone share their thoughts and experiences? Thanks
Its not the engine, but the Exhaust system I would be little concerned about. I have a 2018 Equinox Diesel easily gives 40 MPG, I have had some issues with DPF, other than that it has been a bliss and blessing.

26.4 gallons do the math...over 1000 miles range. It's a beast!
Truth is this stuff is new come back in a few years for a more solid answer
you forgot to mention the occasional emissions light and check engine light coming on especially around 10,000 miles. Mine did it five times within the first three months of ownership and I had to bring it into the dealer every time they replace some sensor or something and I did nothing. On the brink of lemoning it, I should’ve done the research before.
3:07 My Ford Fusion Energi has a feature called Eco Cruise Control which deliberately reduces speed if additional throttle is needed to maintain the set speed. I wish more cars could implement that. When I set it to 100 km/h on the highway and going up a hill, I've seen it go down to 97-98 km/h. It also accelerates slowly - I find that on other cars and when I disable this feature it aggressively throttles to get back up to speed when pressing Resume, but that's not so with this feature.
Also 4:22 is the exact opposite with hybrid and electric cars (anything that supports regenerative braking): while it is true that on a conventional car one should try and conserve their inertia by not braking until the last moment, on a hybrid/electric car one should brake early and slowly. There's a limit as to how much energy at a time can be regenerated into the battery, and braking further than that will cause the friction brake to kick in wasting that energy. Also, at lower speeds your car has lower rolling and wind resistance and on a conventional car that's not enough to offset the additional fuel required to re-accelerate, but on a hybrid car you'll be using your regenerated energy which makes this a non-issue.
The best range vehicle I have seen is the 2022 Ram Tradesman Ecodiesel that can go 1000 mile range. I am amazed at the weight and size vehicles can achieve in this range from GM.
I think 26 mpg is based on average of what you can get, of course those numbers can go up or down depending of various factors from road conditions to how fast you driving. That’s just my opinion.

What you should also talk about is that diesel is already more expensive than gas at pump ! So fuel price would probably balanced either on V8 gas or in V6 duramax !
Not so much, you have to think you’re averaging anywhere from 30 to 40% more miles per gallon diesel then you are on the gas version highway. Most diesel cost anywhere from 20 to maybe 25% more per gallon at the pump then gas. So you are coming out ahead. Depending on how much you drive it could take, a small amount of years to maybe five or more years to see the cost savings. But each mile driven you are coming out ahead.
I need a new house with a bigger garage.
Any one who can afford such a car shouldn’t worry about fuel economy, but I like it’s fuel economy.
Fuel economy is a major factor for buying a diesel vehicle.

Just wait till the engine grenades after the oil belt fails.
The engineer said when that belt breaks it still runs. It will have a check engine light and reduced engine power. That oil belt is no different than a timing chain breaking. Pretty much same thing. Just about every engine has chain or belt. Also it's probably less work dropping the transmission verses removing radiator alternator,ac compressor. Crankshaft pulley and timing chain cover . Also new cars are hard to work on in engine bay so many things are in the way.
Not to take away from the diesel Suburban, as I'm really glad they paired this engine with this vehicle, but I think many will find these results on the optimistic side of things.
This isn't a proper highway MPG test or city MPG test, it's more or less hypermiling, which you allude to. Also, a modern diesel really needs to be driven over a whole tank of fuel or so, to make sure the extra fuel that a DPF Regen burns is taken into account. That significantly increases fuel burn over a small amount of time, and if not included because the test is too brief, will skew results.
Around 300 miles running, DPF regen would burn you half gallon of fuel. That is 5% fuel lost, so 32.8 MPG will lowered to 31.16 MPG.
I just drove 400 plus miles from Tucson to Las Vegas and my 2022 Suburban 3.0 Duramax is showing that we are getting over 30MPG. That is going through Phoenix, stopping for lunch, going through construction zones, and going up and down in elevation multiple times. Speed ranging from 65 to 85 on the highways. I'm very impressed.
New diesels such as these use a lot less fuel for Regen

@@Mark300win DEF is an annoying and unnecessary system that won't allow vehicle to start with expired DEF. Or DEF system malfunction. It reduces power and mpg. It's simply to appease the environmentalists. Prior to DEF, Diesel vehicles in USA were much better.

How about some hard data post top off. Dash gauge is never very accurate. This was 10 minutes wasted.
