      Anything on how to tie the ridge cap of the dormer into the main roof above?

    Thank you for explaining where not to nail. I’ve only ever installed three tab shingles, and while it may be shingling 101, I appreciate you explaining how and where to install nails. And thank you for putting in the time, effort and your garage space in making this video.

    Not having the gable starter worries me, especially in the conditions that roof will face!😅 What do you do with that mock-up when you are done?

  • @jacobecorder

    You didn't show the dormer to roof intersection ridge cap shingle install.. if you do have a video on that, that would be helpful. specifically how the cap goes under the main roof shingle at the intersection point.
    I have this detail to do on my house right now and am not totally sure how to do it.
    Mine has a 12 12 pitch on one side and 4.5 12 pitch on the other side of the dormer. The main roof is 12 12. They are Nantucket dormers.
    Thanks for your videos. they are great!

    So when nailing shingles on the rake edge you want to stay away from nailing thru the metal on the edge?

      Yes I plan on showing cap ridge vent step flashing chimney flashing etc. just the videos were getting a little long. I'm going to try to make the rest quicker to the point that people are searching for. Just takes time in between my job to shoot and edit. I hope you're getting valuable info out of them, thanks for watching!

    You need to watch your nail pattern doing these architectural shingles it’s 4 evenly spaced nails on a low pitch or 6 evenly spaced nails if the pitch is steep

    I have a question. Can you do a California valley with 3 tab or is a closed valley my only other option? I'm going to be redoing my roof myself and I like that look but I'm on a budget.

    • @GrandRoofingInc
      @GrandRoofingInc  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure, the bigger question would be why would you want to use three tab? I would recommend something other than that for sure.

      We are only closed cut valleys here in south Florida and code requires 8 inch bead of bull nipped corners and step billed on every shingle

    and that plastic how can it get the tar seal with that do you need to pull it off

    • @GrandRoofingInc
      @GrandRoofingInc  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The plastic strip on the back of the shingle is only there so they don't stick together in the package. There's no need to peel them off unless it comes off the wrong side and sticks to the seal strip. Then yes peel it off of the seal strip.

    what is easier and better 3 tab or architectural shingles

    • @GrandRoofingInc
      @GrandRoofingInc  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      3 time is not good for anything. If you go in with an asphalt shingle, dimensional for sure.

  • @Josh-ww5kz
    @Josh-ww5kz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What do you think about "Dutch laps"? Where the shingle is a bit small and you purposely try to have a thinner piece overtop of the shingle beside it when its another thin piece? like if you were shingling in beside a wall, like i understand cutting a shingle back to extend the shingle to a better size, but then it messes with your stagger

    • @GrandRoofingInc
      @GrandRoofingInc  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you talkin about overlapping a shingle past the key way?

    • @Josh-ww5kz
      @Josh-ww5kz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GrandRoofingInc Yes exactly, like not by a whole lot, maybe a inch or two. Like at times when you're at the gable of a roof and you don't want do put in a 4 inch piece of shingle, you just find I shingle with a 1 layer and overlap it with another shingle that has a 1 layer on it to make the shingle on the end closer to 6inches.
      Rather than just having the 4 inch piece

    • @GrandRoofingInc
      @GrandRoofingInc  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Okay I know what you're talking about. I'm not a fan of it. Even with one layer over one layer it still doesn't look good to me. If I'm expecting a small piece, I would rather cut it back and add a tab. it's better than overlapping them. To me it just looks like somebody's being quick and not caring about the quality, than just throwing larger tabs in overlapping them. I'm not saying it's bad by any means, I just don't like it.

  • @MaMa-qh4dy
    @MaMa-qh4dy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like ice and water OVER the gutter apron like you did. However, on rake, why not put ice and water also OVER drip edge on gable end so that any water leaking through shingle and starter will not be able to get under drip edge and onto wood?

    • @GrandRoofingInc
      @GrandRoofingInc  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would agree ice and water over Gable edge is good, but not necessary. The water will run down more than over and off the edge metal. That's why the edge metal goes over the paper. But if you want to put the money into it definitely not bad. If you wanted you could even ice and water the entire roof deck, it's not going to hurt anything but cost more.

    • @MaMa-qh4dy
      @MaMa-qh4dy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GrandRoofingInc Why not nail drip edge directly to deck and run paper OVER the drip edge metal? That way, any water getting under shingles at edge will run down on the paper and not get under the metal and possibly into the edge of the wood.

    15:25 you went out of your way to backlap the starter why I know it’s not a big deal but why do that

    • @GrandRoofingInc
      @GrandRoofingInc  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason I did that is because I didn't want the Gable starter coming down covering the seal strip on the bottom starter. Also if you're hanging the starter over the Gable, I like to see that starter strip all the way down not overlapping seeing the bottom starter hangover. I guess you could cut them in a 45 miter to have a clean edge on both sides with starter seal strip. But not too big of a deal. It's nothing that will cause a leak either way. Strictly cosmetic and making sure the seal strips are where they need to be.

  • @jasonjennings5833

    I run my valleys first and cut my ends. I don’t like running that shingle up the valley like that. I think it looks terrible. We have Different styles of roofing but they both work. Great job.
