    This is my senior year and I'm switching from 1st clarinet to Bassoon because our band desperately needs one. I also play Bari Sax, but noting in the Bass Clef. That was one of my main worries-that I'd get really confused. This video helped to ease my worries.

    • @erynoft
      @erynoft  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Artemis B YAY! I am so glad. :) Oh and here's how I help my students transition- Many of my students that switch to reading bass clef use apps that work like flashcards/video games to help them learn to read bass clef quickly. Then when they bassoon- they aren't worried about what note is it? Could they read it? Maybe this will help you, too? Congrats on your bassoon adventure- starting out is such a special and exciting time!

    • @deatherman1027
      @deatherman1027 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Artemis B think of the bass clef as, you are reading on alto sax music

    • @jacobjackson8155
      @jacobjackson8155 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@deatherman1027 This only works if you memorize the key signature transpositions from C to Eb and isn't really practical unless you're playing sax and need to read bassoon music. I'd say that it's better to make the distinction for the instruments and associate bassoon fingerings to the concert pitch bass clef notes, not think of it as sax music.

      @@baroquewinds Idk man... a lot of the raspy bad bass clarinet sound you hear is the player - very few smaller bands can find a good bass clarinetist so it's often overlooked!

    I am a baritone and percussion player and I ha e always wanted to play the bassoon since I started in band, and my senior year I am finally doing that. I have never played a woodwind and I'm choosing the hardest woodwind which to me is the most interesting for my first one. it is intimidating and scary but I'm super excited and I watch this video constantly so I remember all of the fingerings in preparation of me getting my bassoon

    I'm glad you put out this video! I was hoping you'd go past F, but I have to remember, this is for beginners. I've been flirting with the treble clef notes, but my embouchure isn't quite strong enough yet; I can play the high G for several seconds, but it's elusive for the most part. Also, there's still muscle fatigue involved in the lip area. I've gotten the fingering down for everything under that high G, but I wouldn't mind being able to tackle that last octave. Any suggestions? And thank you for the video!

    • @erynoft
      @erynoft  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is great you are working on building muscle! I find that the air speed shifts are the best way to keep muscle fatigue at bay and it also helps so that you do not accidentally pinch with the bottom jaw (which can brighten tone colors). You might consider watching Balloons and Bassoons to help identify the fast air needed for the upper register to be sure you are using your air correctly. Hello, I have taken up bassoon after playing clarinet (the most), saxophone, oboe, and English Horn (the double reeds as an adult). I took lessons during grad school (second career after medicine), and worked with another teacher at a music camp. Everyone I have worked with insists on the "long" fingering for Eb (fork as you described, plus left Eb / resonance key and Bb and middle in the right). They suggested teaching that to students from the beginning. I teach band (subbing right now) and have had some beginning bassoon students (one plays with me in a community orchestra!). With teaching the "short" Eb from the beginning, do you find students having difficulty switching? Do you see problems with intonation?
    P.S. My left thumb is thinner too -- because I have a big callus on my right thumb from oboe! hahaha

    • @erynoft
      @erynoft  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ramiro,
      If you like a challenge- go for it! I've had lots of success transferring students from sax to bassoon. Just be sure to relax your bottom jaw on bassoon so that you get a wide range of colors. There will be a lot more keys than you are used to but that's half the fun! 3 months with daily practice should be plenty of time. In your bassoon adventures if you need any specific bassoon videos, let me know. I love hearing from you guys and getting suggestions. Good luck! :)

      +Vince Beltran Hi there! I wish I had experience with this bassoon so that I could offer a review for you. As it is not one of the big Brand Names for bassoon my only concern would be when you want to upgrade- getting the full purchase price back when you sell. I know that Justin Miller at Miller Marketing offers trade ins for full purchase price when you upgrade and buy from him. It's a thought. Wish I had more to offer. Congratulations on your Bassoon Adventure! It's an exciting time! :)

    Hello. could you recommed bassoon bocal ? I want to buy HECKEL CC1 bocal or anything (actually, I forget my HECKEL bocal cc1 so i must buy new or used one) cc1 or cc2 which one is good for bassoonist? what is your bocal ? ( sorry for my english...)

    • @erynoft
      @erynoft  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +haejin kim I have several Heckel Bocals. I suggest ordering 5 of the type you like best and trying them. Each bocal and each bassoon is unique so it is best to try until you find a good fit- exactly what you are looking for.

    what is the instrument you have, because I think that is my model and I am not sure how to identify it

    • @erynoft
      @erynoft  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Owen Polkinghorne Hi Owen, I wish I could tell you but I was at school and borrowed an instrument a student was renting for a week while hers was repaired to film this video. At the time it was just for Class Woodwinds at JSU- I had no idea other people would watch it or that I would continue to develop My Channel. I think it might have been a Selmer. Look for markings on your instrument on the bell or where the joints meet. Under the bell cap should be a serial number which could help you learn more about your instrument.

Now im here on a monday night trying to learn bassoon and how to read bass cleft as i have been playing treble cleft all my life. This is going to be hard ultimately worth it in the end

      You have a great attitude. Remember to relax the bottom jaw for bassoon embouchure. It will be different from Sax. Best of luck to you!!!

    • @erynoft
      @erynoft  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Anime Penguin Hello! Yes, it is possible. I, too, started on flute and doubled on both instruments until college. The clef is different. Flute reads trebel clef and bassoon bass clef. Double reed instruments usually offer greater scholarship potential, too. Good Luck and Keep me Posted on your Bassoon Adventures! :)

    Not to be negative or judgemental for anything but your staff notes were wrong. When you said A it showed a F. This happened around 2:04. There was more than one and I just wanted to point it out as constructive critisism.

    Good lord! I was an all state low brass player and my son is choosing between bassoon and tuba........I don't know how you expect a 6th grader to remember all those fingerings. I never knew how bad woodwind players had it! I feel like a jerk for always saying brass is better. It's definitely easier!

    • @erynoft
      @erynoft  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha. I think the embouchure on bassoon is easier. And the fingerings get easier as we go. This covers everything as it was originally intended for my students in Class Woodwinds. :)

    • @master____igor6810
      @master____igor6810 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jonathan Reames as you keep playing your mind just remembers the notes and their fingerings so when your/he is playing he sees the notes on the paper and his fingers will move by themselves by memory trust me I thought it was going to be so hard to remember the fingerings but as I went on my fingers and mind just adapted to the fingerings.

    • @master____igor6810
      @master____igor6810 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jonathan Reames but don't let him get to used to high Ab because usually he will play Ab but sometimes he will play High A which is hard if you aren't used to it
