    That pulley on the Amazon Alternator looks like a standard pulley where as the Porsche Alternator looks like a clutch pulley.
    The clutch pulley allows the alternator's heavy rotor to overrun, absorbing shock, each time the alternator cycles on and off (about 3 times per second). The result is smoother idle, no belt chirp, increased life of alternator, power steering pump, water pump, sepentine belt and automatic belt tensioner.

    • @Erik-ms9wt
      @Erik-ms9wt 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The whole pulley thing has been something that looks and sounds good but it's not needed. That's why most aftermarket alternators don't have then.

      @@Erik-ms9wt First of all: learn the difference between your and you're. Second, even if he did copy and paste, doesn't mean he or the information is wrong. Thirdly, need and want and ideal are relative to how well you want an assembly to function. And I'm not even a fanboy of technology just because it's new.

    • @ericl452
      @ericl452 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Erik-ms9wt Erik, the clutched pulley does serve a purpose. The very early 1999 996s, like mine (March 1998 build), came with the standard pulley. Porsche found that the accessory belt would slip on the pulley and eventually shred and fail during aggressive down shifts on the track. If you drive the car only on the street, the clutch is not as important. I track my car so I installed the later Bosch alternator with the clutch. My old alternator needed a rebuild anyway.

    • @markmawson1
      @markmawson1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Erik-ms9wt i copied and pasted it because it was easier and faster that trying to type it soft cock,
      Why do you think car manufacturers spend billions of pounds a year on R&D,
      Do you think they decided to fit a clutch pulley on the alternator just so they didn't have to spend an extra 20p on a nut to hold a pulley on? No they did it because it was less damaging to the rest of the pulleys and belts on the engine, that alternator he replaced it with was probably old stock from an older Porsche model but still fit the newer application,
      Some people will argue over anything on here

    Best video for this repair. The air hammer to push the bushing is the key. I have friends who wasted hours trying to pound it back with a regular hammer. Even a very small air compressor will run an air hammer for 30 second shots, which is all you need.

    good video!!!! I have some good advice for those who read the comments. First piece of advice: if you use the manufacture name and serial number from the alternator. along with the make and model of the car it's on. you can get the new voltage regulator and brushes to repair the existing alternator with. that is very normally what goes out on the alternator. it's under the black plastic cover on the back of the alternator. very easy to replace. and the parts are far cheaper then a new alternator on a modern car.
    second piece of advice for randy: some thought on building a shop. talk to a metal building/ shed sales lot. most of the time when you buy the metal building. the installation is free. food for thought when you get it off the back burners..

    Just a couple bits of advice. Be more gentle with the oil filler hose. They become brittle over time and you can snap one of the two ears off that are used to bolt the plastic piece to the engine. Also when you have disconnected the battery and reconnected it then go to start the car , turn the ignition switch on, wait for it to get done reading the oil level, turn it off and pull the key, repeat this another time, then on the third time start the car. This allows the electronics to calibrate the throttle position sensor properly.

  • @tonywalters5396

    Both 996 and 997 suffer with voltage drop on charging. Very rarely the alternator but the cable from the alternator runs to the front of the car and there is a joint on top of the gearbox and near the battery. These corrode and causes voltage drop so initial charge voltage is acceptable then drops away after a few minutes. First you really know is flat battery and you think you have a drain situation. Best route is to clean the joint posts and possible renew the cable if corroded. Good luck. First time around, I also changed the alternator and I am sure many others have done the same.

    • @jof1953
      @jof1953 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is good advice. Probably nothing wrong with alternator, especially at such low mileage. Pity Randy didn't have that advice earlier: could have saved money and been a more satisfying fix. If the fault actually is the a high resistance/poor contact of the cable/connector the the problem should reappear even with the new alternator.

    • @jof1953
      @jof1953 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Now I think about it all you should do initially to locate the fault is connect a voltmeter between the positive stud terminal at the alt. and ground. Should be around 14V or a bit more. If not then you know the problem is in the alternator or regulator. If voltage is good (i.e 14V or more) then connect voltmeter to battery plus post and ground to see how much the voltage has dropped along the cable/terminal - if the voltage has dropped significantly under 14V and was 14V or over at the alt. then you've found the problem.

    Randy - Check out Wheeler Dealers season 17, episode 1. They work on a 2000 Porsche 911/996 convertible. The big problem they say with the 996 is the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing. If it fails it can trash the engine. They were concerned with theirs and it only had 65,000 miles.

    When you put the new Hoses on and get the system full pressure test it over night if it leaks down just start it. If it has a rough idle at first start in the first 3 seconds without giving it any throttle shut it down immediate pull the plugs you will see which cylinder is having trouble then diagnose from there with a compression test. You will find the problem immediately and which cylinder. I have used red dye just a little. It will not hurt the system at all. A tea spoon of it in the system will show you what is wrong. Plus you will see if the A/C is dripping or if it is Coolant. That is a Tough Motor. but remember Porsche like many Manufacturers put just a little bit of stop leak in the system just like they do when the vehicles are on the line being assembled and ran. Trade Secret LOL.. That cooling system has so many connections it is better to be safe than sorry. Anyway it will be a nice car to play with and sell.. Excellent buy. Excellent Video good content.

    On belts that have a self-tensioner, slide the belt off at a non-grooved idler pulley if you can. Way easier than trying to pull it off a grooved pulley. Not only was I a mechanic for 20 years, but I stayed at a holiday inn express

  • @jeffjohnson3191

    Just a heads up man the alternator you took off had a clutch pulley on it your replacement did not that may cause problems down the road . That clutch pulley reduces tortional vibration to your belt drive components it absorbs shock during shut off and deceleration. Just an FYI

    If not mistaken ! Putting soap into a cooling system and then boiling up the water , might just create excessive additional pressure in the water cooling system ?? The bubbles expanding might just burst a water hose or two ! I have seen some shit in my days but this is a true classic !!!
    I would have used some proper stuff : Wynn's Extreme Cooling System Degreaser removes oil and sludge in the cooling system of vehicles. 911 have the radiators at the front of the car , so jacking up the rear whilst draining the water , will not allow the water from the front of the car to fully drain. Remove drain plug and place car on small race type ramps to lift the front of car ;)

    I need to do this on my drive also. Voltage seems to be hunting on cold start but is fine after. This is a lifesaver. How long did it take you from end to end?

    Using Shout! to clean the coolant system is fairly brilliant. I suspect you might have more problems with hose deterioration, tho.
    You do seem to like to ramble on, a bit.

    I love the videos where you're actually turning wrenches man. I wish you nothing but success.( in a way I guess that's kind of selfish of me) the bigger success you become the more videos I get to watch. Awesome job man
