It's the prayer Jesus taught to his disciples, not an Orthodox prayer, but Christian prayer overall.

I am a Spanish speaker and understood the old Portuguese better
As a Swiss-German speaker I was fascinated because it seems that Middle Dutch seems more similar to modern Swiss-German than is Middle High German, whereas modern Dutch is fairly remote. I understood most of the Middle Dutch without having to read the translation. I understood the Middle High German fairly well because I lknow modern High German, but the Middle Dutch is closer to Swiss German.
As a dutchman i weirdly understood the english more than the dutch one
The middle Dutch is clearly not Dutch but German... Fully shows the high German consonant shift (daz, tuont, machet instead of dat, duon, maket etc)
Old French is easier to understand than modern French to me.
I'm Polish and damn, this accent sounds so different from what I know! I could understand the whole text easily, but the way of writing it and spelling is a whole other thing, it sounds so similar to Czech 😄
Akcent w języku staro-polskim padał na pierwszą sylabę, a dzisiaj jest to przedostatnia - to po pierwsze. Po drugie sposób pisania języka polskiego w tamtych czasach nie był w ogóle unormowany, dlatego różni ludzie inaczej go pisali, pokazany na filmiku nie jest więc żadnym ogólnym.
There was no "Old Polish" in the 1300's/1400's, the earliest "Old Polish" would be from the 1500's. Prior to that Polish/Czech/Slovak were dialects of the same language.
The fragment presented is from the 1300's if I'm not mistaken: "Kazania Świętokrzyskie", so prior to the definite split of the three.
A good source would be the channel: "Innymi Słowy".
Almost everything can be easily understood by modern Russian. Again, less than a thousand years there was one Slavic language.
@@Seyfudin This fragment is not a piece of Kazania Świętokrzyskie (The Holy Cross Sermons), but it's the beginning of the Bible, the very first words (Genesis 1,1).

There was no proper Polish translation of the Bible prior to the 1500's that survives until today.
For me as a Czech, the old polish is much more easier to understand since czech is more preserved and uses more archaic and original words than modern polish. Also the RZ sound is pronounced as our Ř which quite surprised me :D
Polish got influenced A LOT by Latin , French and many others.

Neat how Middle French sounds a lot more Latin than modern French, you can see how it broke off a little and why it's much more different sounding to it's Romance siblings.

I'm Hungarian and I thought exactly the same. Modern French sounds a bit 'off' from other Romance/Latin languages. But Middle French sounds clearly Latin
To be honest Old Romanian is very similar to modern Romanian. Which is still very Latin, Old Romanian had a bit more Old Slavionic loan words than it has today. I saw also a very big difference with Old French, it is much more Latin than it is today 😄🇷🇴❤🇫🇷🏛🐺
I’m not clear how far back the Spanish is supposed to be. It doesn’t look like it’s contemporary to Cantar del Mío Cid, perhaps almost to Cervantes era based on certain spelling changes and pronunciations…maybe 1500s? It would be the Spanish spoken by the first wave of colonizers in the Americas it seems. 🤔
Romanian here! We understand about 95-100% of old romanian because we are taught in school writings written in old romanian even from a very young age. But to be fair old romanian is really not very different from modern romanian at all.

The Greek one in Greek is written:

I don't know if it was written differently in the Byzantine era (where it was quite possibly written, as it is an orthodox prayer), because they has some calligraphic stuff going on there, but this is it in the Greek polytonic system.
The difference between the modern Greek writing system and the polytonic is that the modern has simplified the "tones" (polytonic < poly(many) + tone(the accent mark that they even use in French and makes "á" different from "a") + ic(suffix) ) so vowels like "Α α" can have only one accent mark "Ά ά" instead of the 3+2 they could have which gave them 11 combinations
"Ά ά, Ὰ ὰ, Ᾱ ᾶ, Ἀ ἀ, Ἁ ἁ, Ἄ ἄ, Ἅ ἅ, Ἂ ἂ, Ἃ ἃ, Ἆ ἆ, Ἇ ἇ" and it also removed another symbol called "υπογεγραμμένη" or "ὑπογεγραμμένη" which can go under some letters, specifically: "Α α, Η η, Ω ω" and looked like "ᾼ ᾳ, ῌ ῃ, ῼ ῳ" and it could also be combined with the previous making some weird and complex looking characters like ᾎ ᾮ ᾤ etc, having a total of 22 combinations for the letters Α α, Η η, Ω ω, 11 for the letter Ι ι, 6 for the letter Υ υ and 9 for the letters Ε ε, Ο ο. Don't worry though, it's not that complex (if you know Greek), only a little addons and grammar rules, it just looks menacing because of the possible combinations but in reality its just 3+2+1 symbols of which 1 is rarely used, the 2 go only in the beggining of words and the 1 out of 3 already exists in modern Greek.

An important correction: this was NOT written by the Byzantines as speculated in the comment above.! It's an example prayer given by Jesus Christ to his disciples when they asked him to teach them how to pray (Luke 11). The Greek text of the new testament was written long before the Byzantines
I’m happy I was able to understand old Spanish! I’m Albanian and and grew up watching Italian movies and Spanish novelas.
I also think that the Old Albanian writing is from “Meshari” by Gjon Buzuku, not sure though.

The modern Pronunciation of “j” is probably influenced by Basque. That what i think at least.

I have heard that Brazilian Portuguese sounds like old Spanish, now I see why. I found it much better to listen. Same goes to old Portuguese, much similar to Brazilian Portuguese too

It is easier to understand the middle high german text if you know how to speak like a knight.
As a Polish person the old Polish was quite interesting because I understood about 95% of the words instinctivly. I'm not sure though if that is because they really are that simmilar or if because the person reading the text was "polonising" the words, by which i mean making them sound much more like modern Polish than they would if spoken by the people of the time. We also do it to modern slavic languages,.

Would be cool to do a side by side comparison of Medieval Spanish and Ladino, the Sephardic Jewish Spanish which preserves a lot of the phonetics of 15th/16th Century Spanish.

Galician-Portuguese is a language that I wish it was still around.
Maybe it is still around, at least more than most people could possibly imagine😊. The 'Galician-Portuguese' currently spoken in the most remote and isolated places of Portugal and Spain, should be the closest we can get to medieval 'Galician-Portuguese', I can give you some nice examples...🙂

The number of historical errors in that sentence is just mind-blowing.
1) Portuguese in Europe didn't get anglicized, like this is literally the first time I've heard someone say that.
2) Brazilian portuguese was also influenced by castillian just like galician. It wasn't as much like galician, but it was still influenced, especially in the south of Brazil.
3) Brazil out of all the places was the one that was the least isolated and away from foreign influence, that's just common knowledge. And portuguese in Brazil throughout the centuries since colonial times, it was influenced by many many languages, just like how the English in US was.

A note on your Middle Dutch video: I am fairly certain you are displaying Middle High German text there (it shows Medieval High German diphtongs like uo in guot, as well as the high german sound shift in words like daz). "Vanden Vos Reynaerde" (Of the Fox Reynard) or "Karel ende Elegast" would be wonderful samples of Middle Dutch. Here's a few lines from Reynard the Fox in Middle Dutch:
Willem, die Madocke maecte,
daer hi dicken omme waecte,
hem vernoyde so haerde
dat die avonture van Reynaerde
in Dietsche onghemaket bleven
- die Arnout niet hevet vulscreven -
dat hi die vijte dede soucken
ende hise na den Walschen boucken
in Dietsche dus hevet begonnen.
Please note the lack of the 2nd sound shift in 'dat', and the very non Medieval High German vowel in 'boucken' (books; MHG would show büecher here).
It looks like the sample is from the Minnesanger 'Hendrik van Veldeke', who was most certainly a medieval dutchman! But it seems that he either composed this in Middle High German, or someone translated it from a Middle Dutch version to a MHG version.
As a Ukrainian I understood the old Polish part entirely, not even without a mistake.
Is Modern Polish is unintelligible to a Ukrainian speaker? Ukraine in the Polish-Lithuanian Common Wealth?

Fascinating. I'm German, and i immediately understood what the person speaking old dutch was saying, except for the last line. Maybe i understood it so well because High German and Dutch are very closely related languages, or maybe it was the trace amounts of Low German comprehension i retain due to my grandmother often speaking Low German with our older relatives (Low German, and especially Westphalian Low German, the mother tongue of my ancestors, is even more similar to dutch then High German is).

Woah. I can almost entirely understand Old Polish (while my native language is Russian). And Old English has such an unusual accent, like I only understood some words after comparing them to text :D
In the video you actually heard Middle English, which was spoken after the Norman French invasion which brought a lot of French vocabulary. Before this, the old English spoken was so unrecognizable that you can’t understand it unless you speak Dutch or German

So interesting that it's possible to notice how the Gallician-Portuguese was read with proper pronunciation, but with Brazilian accent
The "Middle Dutch" example is in fact Middle High German (Mittelhochdeutsch)

Koine Greek is recited with modern Greek pronounciation. I wonder if that's the way it was pronounced back then.

Most of the radical phonological changes from ancient to modern Greek started happening around the end of the Hellenistic period and concluded a few centuries later. So yes, Byzantine Greek is very similar to modern in terms of pronounciation even though there are significant differences in terms of grammar and vocabulary.
There's some small phonological differences in Late Koine and Medieval Greek to Modern Greek, but using Modern pronunciation for Greek spoken in the Byzantine Empire is more or less accurate.
The ancient greek pronounciation was different. For example, beta was "b" and not "v", gamma was like g in "go" and not like y in "you", ypsilon was not "ee" but more like german umlaut-u, etc.

South Slavic was not a single language back then and east slavic can be considered more like asian than european
As a Romanian I understood about 70-80 % what it said but my I didn’t thought would be Walachia (keep in mind there are different accents of Romanian)
What you have not understood it is not actually Romanian. For example, ”I pak” is just a borrowed expression (from South Slavic / Old Church Slavonic) - mixed in the text with Romanian, like today we say ”wtf!?” when we're very surprised - under the influence of English.

Everything is understandable except I pak. And I doubt that was part of the vocabulary in use of the ordinary people even back then. Looks more like a stylish extravagance the writer permits himself in the form of a borrowed Slavic expression.

Ok so the reason why I said 80% instead of 90% is because I didn’t learn enough Romanian to speak Romanian properly as I only studied nursery in Romania and then moved to England

I agree. Modern [Parisian]French isn't a natural evolution of the language but a heavily codified/standardised version of it. As a result, it has lost its flavor. You can see it if you compare its spelling and its intonation to any French dialect's. French linguist here.

Brazilian portuguese as a whole received an influence from spanish, but the southern brazilian accent is truly the one that's been the most influenced by spanish especially when you remember that the southern region of Brazil *was under spanish rule for a much longer time than it was under portuguese rule.*
"European portuguese only became stress timed in the late 1800" wrong, just wrong. Are you brazilian?? Cuz that's a common mistake brazilians make and they even say that European portuguese received influence from French when that "influence" was in the middle ages and it wasn't even from French it was from Occitan. Portuguese has always been a stressed time language, that has always been part of the core of the portuguese language, from the very beginning. Brazilian portuguese and Galician don't have as much reduced sounds cuz they were all influenced by foreign languages especially Spanish. An example of that is the fact that galician-portuguese didn't really use gerund to conjugate verbs. Like where do you think portuguese came from?? It came from the *north of Portugal,* you seriously believe that random brazilians from the south of Brazil, the region that's been the most castilianized in its pronunciation, speaks with a more fateful accent?? If you go to villages in Galicia, where the influence of Spanish wasn't as prevalent, older people will talk in almost the exact same way portuguese people do, especially the one's from the north of Portugal.
Also another nonsensical statement that you made was saying that European portuguese was influenced by english.... just what???? That's even funnier than saying portuguese was influenced by French. Portuguese in just absolutely no way was influenced by English 😂. The only influence ghst English had was in portuguese literature, it didn't influence the pronunciation or the vocabulary or morfology of portuguese. In fact, brazilian portuguese even uses more loan words from English than European portuguese does.

Old Portuguese has a more similarities with spanish... Sometimes it sound like spanish ... They used "muy" in place of "muito" and the "v" sound like "b" like spanish ....

In Albania the old Albanian is more like gheg dialect and I think Albanians still use it in the north like northern Albania,Kosovo,North west Macedonia,South Montenegro and even some in Dalmatia

Andy, the 'Middle Dutch' poem is actually in Middle High German. Although its author, Hendrik van der Veldeke, wrote in a Middle Dutch dialect, most of his works have only survived in Middle High German translations, which is what your text is. Try a piece of the medieval poem 'Van den vos Reynaerde' instead:

It is a very good initiative to present the reconstructed pronunciation of old European languages. I was impressed about the careful and minute diction of the Germanic and Romance languages. Albanian could have been better, though- it is unlikely that “ë” would have been muted as it is in the modern language.

When did the Spanish j sound evolve from sounding like the J of English, French and Portuguese to having a sound like that of the aspirated h of Germanic languages? I noticed that in Old Spanish the j is pronounced like we pronounce it in modern English.
That change occurred during the 1600s and became fully established by the end of the 17th century in what we call the readjustment of the sibilants. It wasn't just the "J" that lost its palatalization but also the "G" before "e" and "i" vowels like in the words "genius" or "imagination". The gist of it is is that these palatal sounds malformed and turned into /sh/ sibilant sounds, and then, after these two letters changed sound; too many words with "SHs" started being performed at the front of the mouth. And so with time, these sounds slowly started creeping their way further and further into the back of the mouth until reaching the velar region where modern Spanish has them. And along with this change, not only did Spanish lose almost all of its palatal sounds but it also lost the /sh/ sound entirely from its phoneme inventory which is why other languages write the modern Spanish spelling of "Don Quijote" as "Don Quixote ". Because old Spanish used to have the "x" letter reserved for the /sh/ sound. So those languages that write "Don Quixote" or pronounce it as "Don Quishote" (like Italian for example) are truer to the original pronunciation than Spanish lol. Galician went through this same exact evolution but stopped right at the "SHing" phase. And so in Galician they pronounce words like "genius" and "imagination" as "shenius" and "imashination". Though there's still the Ladino language (Judeo-Spanish). Which is practically Spanish with that old pronunciation but with a bit of many other languages mixed in.

It's also worth noting that this aspiration is known to have started in the southern region of Spain which is now "Andalucia". You can see how it makes sense how they could've started aspirating these sounds because nowadays it is common in that region as well as in the Canary Islands to aspirate the /s/ or to not pronounce it at all. This aspiration of the /s/ can also be heard in some latin american accents like the venezuelan. So the belief that these changes ocurred thanks to the influence of arabic is debatable to say the least. Mainly because the strong /h/ that resembles that of the Arabic one is a trait found only in the northern and central regions of Spain.
I found Latin similiar , understand very good Dutch and German (when I learn German I know none any word but learn basic in 3 month ) ,regarding the Greek accent sometimes seems as Spanish for my ear melodic , probably as sea or siren language but very similiar only in the ear melodic not meaning , the polish and Russian just one or none of word understand !
Albanian is bad pronunce and bad translated but is similiar to ancient Latin and some of ancient Venetian language dialect for some words !

My favourite Language is Italian to speak , Sicilian to sing and Spanish to dance , the French when I have an Strait flush poker in hand so superiority or negotiation , the German and Dutch as ready to open a threasure , Greek a language of sailors and Nordic the language of war and thunderstorm !
For example word thunderstorm in Albanian is RRUFEIA (rru mean save and feja mean the faith) is pure Zeus god and this language is important to be studied not for the Albanians but for what they represent !

If there are any native Dutch speakers watching this, how comprehensible is Middle Dutch to you?
To me, it sounds more like its Frisian cousins than it does Modern Dutch. But I don't speak Dutch very well, so I'd love to hear from anyone who does!
It sounds way more like German than to Dutch, it really doesnt sound similiar at all. Could barely understand what was said without watching the screen. It's so interesting.
There's no guttural G, the language sounds way more melodic than modern Dutch, there are no suffix's on verbs (for example: 'gebluot' would be 'gebluotEN' in modern Dutch) and theres slight vowel reduction, which is a feature of Afrikaans but not modern Dutch.
As a native Afrikaans speaker, I could get very little from it. It feels like I'm reading broken German, which is odd since Afrikaans supposedly split from Dutch in the Middle Dutch period.
Old English is very close to modern day Frysian.
And yeah I am frysian and I can understand old german, old dutch and old English. Old English sounds to closest to Frys.
As someone from Limburg, I understood it with barely any issues. It sounds very familiar. But it seems that they either used a low east Franconian version of Dutch or just mixed it up with high german

Romanian is a very conservative language, few significant chances are made over time and this is the reason any modern speaker of Romanian (like me) would understand our 16th century (when the text in Old Romanian shown in this video was written) counterparts and we could perhaps go even further in the past and still make ourselves (at least mostly) understood with the Romanians of those long gone days.

I want to learn the Dutch of the Netherlands 🇳🇱, because it’s one of my top 11 favorite countries, but the Dutch G is physically painful for me to try to produce, and, although I heard that the G from the south of the country and Flanders is softer, I wasn’t able to pronounce that one. As a portuguese speaker i only understood perfectly (or majority) the Galician-portuguese one, the reason is that galician is the origin of portuguese language ,i didn't understood perfectly the old Spanish, i can understand better the modern Spanish (because the modern one looks like portuguese language)
As a Pole, despite significant differences in the spelling, the pronunciation differed in the lack of current Polish characters such as ó, ł, ą. But I understood the whole text and I know that this is the beginning of Genesis, i.e. the moment when God created.

Most Dutch say Middle Dutch is easy to read,the word order is almost the same (not like old Dutch/franconian) and most words are just slight variations
