Overwatch 2 - Illari Sound Design - Behind the Scenes (Internal video cleared for publishing)

  • This a behind the scenes video that I presented internally to all the Blizzard game teams. That's why you'll hear me say things like 'team 4'. That's the internal name for the Overwatch dev team.
This video was cleared for me to share publicly. Hope you get something out of it! If anything it may help demystify the sound design process. It really was a matter of experimentation and trial & error until something stuck. Thanks for watching!

I find it fascinating that even so sunlight normally doesn´t make any sounds the sound-effects for Illari´s solar-rifle just sound so fitting.

Amazing Stuff, really fun seeing what objects were used to make her Solar sounds. I would love to see more behind the scenes with how the sounds for the game are made!

Only 1 word came to me: "HOW!?"

Illari is my favorite hero, both to play and her overall design. It’s so cool to see the process and experimentation that goes into making sounds that don’t have any precedent in real life

This is amazing and it’s so cool how that crazy sound is a flute and a metal pipe. I have no idea how you could think of that it sounds so perfect!

Well done Felipe! Overwatch has some of the coolest sound design for each hero and I was always curious how you approached Illari's sound design!

the sound design in overwatch is by far the best of its genre, and one of the best in the entire industry and has been since its initial release in 2016. it's absolutely incredible and somehow just continues to get better. i love learning about how you come to make every single hero sound unique, satisfying, and perfectly matched to their character. i would be very interested to see this with past and future heroes too! especially the support heroes since it's very interesting to me how you've managed to make the same mechanic (healing) sound so different between each character, yet equally as satisfying to do.

Enfim, sucesso pra tu, Felipe. :)

Great job I'm a sound designer and illari main and I love the sound Design of her! I definitely feel inspired!
The only thing I can criticize is her primary fire. I'm used to it by now, but I remember at the start it felt a little weak, like pew pew pew. But it has it's favours bc enemies underestimate my power hehe

i love every detail that this character has, being from my own nationality, i am fascinated and love all the love and passion that all the developers put into him and when i had already seen the development on the subject of sound effects i am left much more surprised with the work they did using Peruvian instruments, thanks to all the developers for this beautiful work and effort ❤🙌

That is hilarious. That you made the sounds this way. I've seen those vids before with sound designers smashing pumkins and stuff. Seems like a fun job. Hilarious. As a music producer I know all to well that you can get some crazy sounds by just doing audio manipulation with ton plugins 😂 You can almost make anything out of any soundsource.

At 1:39 you can see my full fx chain lol. The gist for this was throwing some pitch effecting plugins like Manipulator then just completely smashing the sound with multi and compression (OTT). I had experimented so much that I ended up 'throwing the everything but the kitchen sink' at the recordings, like I mentioned in the video. So don't expect my fx chain to make much sense lol. It was just chaos until something interesting happened. Which in itself is a valid tactic in sound design when u want to get something completely new and 'get out of your own way'. I was in my own way by overthinking things, and it was the chaotic approach that got me results

@felipepereira4911 thank you for your reply! Sorry, I was watching tiktok style: half-attentively, and on my small phone screen... this is much appreciated. I am also of this school of thought... throwing stuff and seeing what sticks. sometimes I wonder if I'm missing something, forgetting the essentials. Other times, I'm wondering if I haven't got those 'essentials' in my toolkit - it turns out I do. I have to be more diligent and deliberate, thinking through what I want to achieve and what I'm actively doing (in reference to overthrowing everything). What I was mostly wondering is if a workflow such as yours in a commercial environment with concrete timelines still works - there's a risk of traveling down that path of chaos and it ending up being a dead-end, possibly wasting some time in the process - fortunately this time it was a fruitful journey for you! Cheers.

@@liamd3484 luckily, with new heroes we get a good chunk of time towards the beginning of production to really find their signature sound. It's definitely a privilege because not many AAA studios prioritize good sound design and will often just tack it on at the end without much foresight. We definitely have it good in that regard.
